Viviane wrote in asking, “I would like to begin to “improve” my apartment by redecorating it myself a bit. Which interior design books can you suggest for a lay person?”
Viviane, good news! I’ve been working on a list now for several months over at Amazon, it’s called decor8: My Picks for Design Addicts. It’s a work in process, I add to it as I discover new ones (or remember ones from the past). I hope my book list over on Amazon is a good start for you.
Of course, decor8 readers are a savvy bunch. I’m sure some of them can give you a tip or two.
Anyone want to help out Viviane?

I recommend Distinctive Home by Jeremiah Eck. Although this book focuses on architecture it shows how a beautifully designed home is reflected both inside and out.

I am obsessed with Living Large in Small Spaces: Expressing Personal Style in 100 – 1,000 square feet. A lot of small-space books focus on creative architectural solutions (great if you can renovate) but this one places more emphasis on decoration and organization. The apartments featured are an endless source of inspiration! Also, Mary Gilliatt’s Interior Design Course is an amazing and well-structured guide.
