Thanks, Hallmark!

I’m very excited to share this, as it’s the first magazine appearance for decor8. The premiere issue of Hallmark magazine (Sept/Oct 2006) hits Hallmark stores and newsstands this week, and they were kind enough to write about decor8 as a blog that they love (green box on page 54). How flattering, especially since I’m just a little blog compared to the mighty giants out there. If you are new to decor8, coming over from Hallmark, welcome! To your left are links to some of my favorite blogs, along with archives of decor8 back to when I first launched the site Jan. ’06. To your right, you can view my favorite shops from coast to coast, along with the best Canadian stores and ones in Europe that are worth visiting during your travels. I add new links all the time, so it’s good to check back before you head off on your next vacation. Beneath the shop links, you’ll see more links to online stores that I like, along with design related magazines, beautiful stationery (many from indie artists that I love), pet supply resources, etc.

Here in the center of the blog is where you’ll read about my latest finds. decor8 is my journal, a place where I openly share things that I love and ideas and tips that I’ve used either myself or with my clients, with hopes that you find bits here that are useful to you. I update the site 4-6 times daily from Monday – Friday, and if there is time, on the weekends too. decor8 is not my ‘day job’, I’m a freelance writer and an interior design consultant, so I cannot commit to writing a set number of posts per day, however I do make sure that what I do cover is interesting and inspiring.

So, without further blah blah, welcome to decor8. Feel free to email me or, if you’re an artist or designer and have something you’d like to contribute to this blog, please contact me. I’m always looking for good writers who love design, so step up and take part if you’d like.

Again, many thanks to Hallmark magazine for thinking about me!

Are you expecting visitors who aren’t smart enough to figure out the layout of your blog????

    Thanks Michelle, trudesign and Maryam!!

Anonymous – I’m sure you are just teasing around but if you are not, let me explain.

No, of course I don’t think people are stupid, but you know, a lot of people aren’t familiar with what blogs are and really don’t know how they different from a regular website – trust me. Some of my own family still ask me what a blog is when I tell them about decor8. I’m thinking that since those that shop at Hallmark are from ALL age groups, so there are bound to be those that check out decor8 and don’t really ‘get it’. My husband volunteers at a local senior center to teach the 55+ crowd how to use the internet, some of them send their FIRST email when he assists them, it’s so cute! Grandparents are online these days. My own mother, who is in her 50s, didn’t know what a blog was and what all my links were about until I told her. She has never had an email address.

So, to answer your question with a question, do you think that just because someone is online, they know exactly WHAT a blog is and that they have been on for years and years, understand everything there is to know about blogs, and is so totally tuned in, as I imagine you are? Think about it.

But, I’m guessing you are around 25 and have a blog yourself, so you are quite savvy, you may not have considered this point.

thanks for the support, crew! :)

yeah, it was really fun to see my name in a magazine so widely distributed, it’s almost surreal, you know?

michelle will be featured soon in a major magazine, too – won’t you ms caplan??? i can’t wait to post about that – whoa, what an accomplishment for her.

for me and michelle, and others who just appear in a magazine, it’s very flattering. none of us have a pr background, we don’t have tons of contacts out there, we don’t live in new york, so it’s even more special to us because it’s just so random, you know? it’s not like we pitched anything…

    Woo hoo! This rocks!

Congratulations on the coverage – you deserve every bit. I have to say, I’m very impressed with how thoroughly and thoughtfully you’ve built your blog. Decor8 is a great example of how good a blog can be — you’ve built on the strengths to everyone’s benefit, without belaboring your posts.

You’ve really packed it with useful and entertaining content — and pictures! lots of pictures! — which is economical, as well. A reader can tell you put a lot of thought into it, which should say a lot about how you approach your other work.

    Well done!

“But, I’m guessing you are around 25 and have a blog yourself, so you are quite savvy, you may not have considered this point.”

Did you really write this as a response to a reader?

As a regular Decor8 reader, I was shocked to see you use such a harsh tone of voice with your public.

Did other readers feel a little bit alienated by this comment?

    Hi green tea! Eek! Sorry!!!!

I’m so happy you said something, I didn’t know that I came across harsh, and I’m really really sorry. I just meant that not all people reading decor8 are blog experts, I’m still explaining to my mother what a blog is all about, and she is a very young 50-something. I thought that, since I don’t know who the anonymous commenter is, that they must be really savvy with blogs or else they wouldn’t have commented that.

No one is trying to be mean, I’m sure she was just teasing around anyway.

    hi holly!
    love your blog!
congrats on the hallmark write up.
i think green tea misunderstood your response to “anonymous” who was harsh + misunderstood your generous explanation of your site.
i understood it as a happy hostess welcoming new readers to your blog + showing them around, like you might in your home. of course, people know there’s a kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, etc. but it’s nice to have the hostess show you around + invite you to join in :D
