Marimekko Cow in Boston

A little bovine love in the house!

Anh-Minh Le, who contributes articles here on decor8 from time to time, was in Boston this past weekend and spotted a cow that I’ve missed – a cow decked out in Marimekko near the Crate + Barrel store on Boylston Street. What a great photo, Anh-Minh!

The Cow Parade is so much fun, they are all over the city (and have been for awhile now), and I know that when it ends in September, the cows will be greatly missed. They’ve added so much cheer to the beautiful city of Boston. Thankfully for the locals, there’s a Cow Parade Boston book for purchase online. You can even collect mini cows, see them all here.

Benefiting the Jimmy Fund’s fight against cancer, this cow will be part of the online auction beginning at midnight September 21st. Click Here to pre-register and to learn more about the auction.

We had a cow parade here in UK, the cows were amazing and just brought smiles to people’s faces. Wish they could stay :)

    Holy cow…

We’re sort of getting flooded with Marimekko’s Unikko print here in Finland. We have that in furniture, kitchenware, clothing, linnen, tv’s (oh yea), nordic walking sticks (like x-country skiing without snow) and cars.

First time I’m hearing about Unikko cows.

Maija Isola designed this pattern in the 6o’s. She’s such a great artist, and I wish people would take a look at her other great designs.

I better cover Maija Isola in my blog asap. Maybe they’d start producing other types of cows…

So I did it right away.

Please do use others patterns than Unikko, please… ;-)

    Janne,

Each cow is actually handpainted and sponsored – in this case, the Marimekko cow in Boston was sponsored/designed by Crate + Barrel, a US based chain store that carries items for the home, along with some Marimekko bedding, their most popular being the Unikko print. I think that is why they selected that print, since it’s carried in thier stores.

It’s frustrating sometimes though when a designer becomes known for one or two patterns, often people forget that the designer created lots of designs, some that are even better than what became mainstream. Orla Kiely and Angela Adams are perfect examples of this.

    Holly,

Wow, it’s quite amazing that someone has resources to get them handpainted. I hope they were using at least some type of partly stencils.

And many other patterns would look really ridiculous on a cow… ;-)

Designers can suffer like actors – Larry Hagman will be JR forever!

    Warm regards from Finland!

I love the Cow Parade! It was in Kansas City a few years ago and they had cows of Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow & the Wicked Witch from Wizard of Oz. So clever…

    In response to Janne,
As one of the Cow Parade artists I can assure you that getting a cow hand painted is not as costly as one might imagine. It is a lot of work though. However, the majority of artists think of this experience as a good way to give back to the community since a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the cows goes back to local charities. It’s also a good way to get exposure to the people who might not otherwise be ever introduced to your art.
