coffee + cre8tive {dec 4 ’06}

You may recognize the top left image, as it appears on the cover of Selvedge magazine out of the UK. I was so swept away by this photo that I had to purchase the issue to learn more – the bold textiles in striking red and navy, her steadfast gaze, the fur hat (oh wouldn’t you love to have the courage to wear it!) and of course, the darling fish handbag. If you’re curious to learn who designed so much beauty, the artist is London-based Karen Nicol, a embroidery and mixed media textile designer with over 20 years experience designing textiles for fashion and interiors including many high profile clients. The cover features one embroidered ensemble that she designed for Michiko Koshino, however she contributed to many more – working on 3 of his collections in 2002/2003. Of course, there’s more to learn about Ms. Nicol, so please pick up a copy of Selvedge (they are available in America, check your local Borders or Barnes and Noble) and browse her website if you feel like researching her when you have moment. Her works are a lovely and inspirational journey into both the soul and the imagination to say the least. I’m sure you will agree.

    Oh seriously, huh? I was at a used book store this afternoon looking at embroidery books from the early 40s and just stood there and felt totally out of it as a female – I am so not martha! But oh how much I want to be. I embroidered an eiffel towel on a tea towel over the summer and it came out quite scary – and it was hard work!
