I found a neat little eBay store over the weekend while searching for an alabaster deer head. Strange item to desire, but you must relate… I think we’ve all obsessed over something that others found a bit odd (your boyfriend, those jelly shoes, that eggplant hair color). I first came a white deer head in Real Simple magazine, then I spotted another on flickr from Shimrit + Yaar. Seeing that I couldn’t find any in local stores, or online (when I did they were always out of stock), I turned to my friendly eBay and searched for ‘deer heads’. Simple enough. Or so I thought.

I kid you not, I had to endure endless images of creepy stuffed heads until I found my diamond in the rough, a seller that not only had several in stock, but the price was right. He also has an online store in addition to his website, and his home won the 2005 “Home of the Year” award from Metropolitan Home magazine. A Thai-American living in Washington, D.C., Supon Phornirunlit, has a great eye for design and stocks some great products, so I’m sure you’ll want to shop his finds in both his eBay store and website, Home Republic. See Supon’s home here (don’t miss his retro cookie jar collection!).

Check out all these heads over the bed!

I know some say antlers are out, but I think good design is good design and if it makes you happy and looks great in your space, then that is all that really matters. I plan to have a dog someday and think this would make a fun hook for a dog leash in a mud room, so once I tire of it on display in my living room, I’ll move it over to another area of my home for a more functional purpose, like the entryway.

So, what do you think of these heads? Be honest.

I found the same deer head by visiting the following website, but sadly, they are out of stock:

I would skip the heads. But I would like to steal the rest of the room in the last picture…

Love them! This is my first post, and just wanted to say how much I appreciate your blog.

I’ve been considering these ram and cow busts from Pennoyer Newman

I like the antlers, but just the antlers, the full head creeps me out a bit. I think it’s the hollow eyes. In our wallpapered entryway (I was short on paper so once it arrives, I’ll send photos) we’re going to hang 3 pairs of the Lekker silver ones.

    PS. LOVE the blog!

For someone who daily fights her husband about hanging one of those hideous stuffed ones on our living room wall, I love the deer. I am happy to compromise with just antlers. I have a set in my family room and living room, one natural, one painted white. Cow busts and horns appear to be on the rise as well. :)

hmmmm…personally not so keen on the whole antler/deer thing stuffed or otherwise, but have you seen the wooden versions? They kinda look like they’ve been ‘slotted’ together a bit like an Airfix model aeroplane kit. I don’t have a link handy, but I know the Conran Shop in the UK have them. I like the idea of a new slant on a traditional idea.

Personally I still like the dear heads and antlers. This white one is particularly lovely – it has such a delicate quality to it.
Will you be hanging it on a white plaster wall? A colored wall? Wallpaper? I would love to see picture of it when it finds its “home”. I also love the idea of using it for a pet’s leash much later when you get tired of it. I find that this happens a lot in my own house. I buy something, a painting for example, that I am very excited about and it becomes a special piece in a prominent place in my home – like over the sofa in the living room. Then, in a couple of years, I want a new look and the prized painting ends up somewhere else, maybe a powder room used only by guests. The old item gets a new location/new purpose and then I love it all over again.
I would love to see some pictures of your own home one day! I hope that doesn’t sound stalker-ish, I just think you are so full of lovely and unique decorating ideas that it would be fun to have a sneak peek into the Decor8 home!

Yuck! It feels like you would get a bad injury if they fell off the wall.

I have to say – this is the second time I have had to purchase something from one of your posts! I love this blog – I mostly catch it over at Flickr. I have a little dog statue like this that I have adored since the day I “impulse” bought it! And I know I’m going to feel the same way about the deer head! It is seriously cool! :)

I was so happy to see there was one on eBay just now and even though “I shouldn’t have” – how could I resist!? :)

I’ve had some white antlers up for a few years now (I’d like to think before they got popular), so I actually really like them.

    Flickr photo here.

Unlike all of the ones being made today, mine are actually vintage antlers that I spray painted (read: very, very cheap!).

Holly — We have a deer head just like that white one! It’s from John Derian. You can’t buy online, but try phoning the store. Check it out!

Interesting! I remember his first business, Supon Design. They did very impressive graphic design work.

Just antlers normally creep me out, fake or not. But a fake deer head seems, I dunno, nice whereas a real one is just so wrong.

    Love it!
