Orla Kiely Spring/Summer 2007

March 5, 2007

Orla’s Spring/Summer 2007 campaign is lovely, her rugs and pillows, and of course the clothes and bags… They make me feel happy today. Pretty images with a splash of yellow, they can really make the beginning of a work week brighter, can’t they? Enjoy.

Walnut Wallpaper (+ Paper Ideas For You!)

March 4, 2007

Norinne DeGal, owner of Walnut Wallpaper out of Los Angeles, stocks papers like no other. Gone are the days of shopping papers that are ‘trade-only’ or amazingly country (in a bad way). If it’s modern cool you’re looking for, you can shop Walnut and find all the big names, from Twenty2 to Cole & Son, Allegra Hicks, Mibo, Neisha Crosland, Osborne & Little, and Mod Green Pod, to name only a few. She also stocks Palace Papers, which are my flavor of the moment, here’s a peek:

Palace Papers

On the website, you can browse papers by color, style, designer, or featured papers, which I love because if my heart screams for something in blue, I can search the aqua or blue collection and find exactly what I’m looking for. Or, if I’m craving a geometric print, I can search under geometrics. It’s so easy!

The same geometric print in two different colors. Lovely!

Walnut is located at 7220 Beverly Blvd, Suite 201, in LA or you can check out their website and email them if you’re interested in placing an order. Their email addy is contact {at} walnutwallpaper {dot} com. We need something like this in Boston – badly. We don’t have a modern wallpaper boutique that isn’t for the trade only…

Wallpaper tips: Purchase a few feet to mount on fore core and frame for the wall, or install it directly on the wall and frame it out with moldings. Cover a desk or table top (like a coffee table – looks gorgeous), create a room divider, closet doors, collage on a single wall using all of your favorite wallpaper scraps cut into neat squares, or paper a tiny room or a single wall in your home. It’s also beautiful inside of a walk-in closet. Use it on the ceiling (see image below). Remove the shelves and paper the interior of a bookcase, put the shelves back in place, and voila! A completely new look. You can use it as contact paper for kitchen cabinets. Wallpaper possibilities are endless…

Add wallpaper to the ceiling for high impact.

Happiness is BDDW Furniture…

March 3, 2007

I’ll take one of everything, please. BDDW makes my heart do somersaults whenever I see it, it’s so gorgeous, and their product shots are positively inspirational. They’re based in NYC, with a showroom down on Crosby Street where you can view everything up close and personal. Here’s some eye candy for you to enjoy today… Notice the woodgrains and how they seamlessly blend rustic charm (love some of the raw edges) with clean, modern design. Also take note of the simplicity, rooms aren’t layered in clutter, things are well-arranged and quite minimal. Nice!

We Heart Egg Cozies

March 2, 2007

How adorable are these things? I swear you don’t need them, but everytime I come across cozies, I try to convince myself that I really do. UK company The Black Rabbit, handcrafts some of the cutest ones ever. Look at that spider. Those chicks. That silly rabbit with the ditzy look on its face. They’re knitted in lambswool with cotton lining and come in several different designs, all of which I love.

We Heart Egg Cozies
Peek Keep, here in the U.S., has some gorgeous felted bunnies and hen egg cozies, too. Such cuteness.

We Heart Egg Cozies
Papa Stour of Scotland has a few irresistible cozies. So does Rose + Radish via Hut Up (German felt design studio). Imagine how these would look on your breakfast table…

We Heart Egg CoziesOf course, egg cozies are not simply a fun way to present food to your guests, but they keep the eggs warm for serving. Are you sold yet? Desire a little cozy for yourself?

March 2, 2007

If you’re in the city tomorrow, there’s a great event that you won’t want to miss, especially if you’re a mid-century modern fan. The grand opening celebration of Machine Age over at 645 Summer Street (South Boston harbor district) from 6-9 p.m. will showcase the photography of Michael Flomen from the “Higher Ground” series, and you can view the new Machine Age 9,000 sq ft. showroom, filled with mid-century modern finds, not repros, but high quality originals at great prices. Check out some of the showroom images – don’t they make your mouth water? Look at this Danish buffet… YUM.

Berlin Artist: Tina Berning – Brings "100 Girls" to Gallery Hanahou in NYC

March 2, 2007

Have you heard of Berlin-based artist Tina Berning? I love her illustrations of women, and was excited to learn that she’s bringing “100 Girls on Cheap Paper” to Gallery Hanahou in New York. I may just have to go down to check that out, it looks absolutely mesmerizing.

Berlin Artist: Tina Berning - Brings "100 Girls" to Gallery Hanahou in NYC
The opening reception is on March 29th from 6:00-9:00 p.m., but the exhibit will run until May 11th. “100 Girls” has traveled from Berlin to Tokyo, garnering praise and much interest along the way, so if you’re in New York, you have to visit Gallery Hanahou to see Tina’s works for yourself.

More about the show from a recent press release, “Artist Tina Berning counters the glossiness of the ideal image by stripping it down to cheap and yellowed paper, eliminating mask, pose, and fashion, giving the girls she draws back an expression beyond beauty and surface, so that they endanger the collective standard.”
