Mood Board Contest: Beachy Modern by Flavia Leite

If spending time at the shore is your favorite way to relax, then you’ll really enjoy the color palette and Julia Rothman-inspired seaside modern room that Flavia pulled together. Natural wood combined with white lacquered furniture is such a pretty combination. And these colors – so serene!

Name: Flavia Leite
Occupation: Public Relations Manager
State/Country: Virginia, USA
Theme: Beachy Modern
Inspiration: I wanted to create a room dedicated to working on creative projects. I started with the blue, one of my favorite colors, and was going on a different direction until I saw the pink flamingo pattern by Julia Rothman. It inspired me to make the room brighter and more beach-y. Thanks for holding such a fun contest!

Thank you for entering the decor8/Amy Butler mood board contest, Flavia! I’ll post as many entries as I can fit in today, and then that’s it, the contest will wrap up and tomorrow we’ll all get to vote for our new winners. Yeah!

Mood Board Contest: Vintage Glam by Allison Hefner

Meet Allison, an aspiring interior designer that is inspired by a Betsey Johnson clutch. She calls her room, Vintage Glam, and we all know a mood board contest isn’t complete without at least one glam-tastic design in the mix. ;) Thank you for bringin’ it, Allison. I’d love to see this as a room.

Name: Allison Hefner
Occupation: Freelancer/aspiring interior designer
State/Country: Colorado/USA
Theme: Vintage Glam
Inspiration: A fabulous retro-inspired clutch from Betsey Johnson. I wanted to capture the essence of glamour and elegance that defined the era of the ‘Rat Pack’ but with a more edgier influence. By coating the walls in a rich, opulent aubergine, I decided to give the room a modern twist by keeping the decor clean and simple with an all white and black palette. Accent colors are kept to a minimum with touches of pink and red that ‘pop’ and compliment the purple walls. I also wanted to add texture to the room by complimenting the key features of the purse – feathers and reflective surfaces, which are represented by decor elements such as the mirrored side table and goose feather pendant.

Thank you for entering the decor8/Amy Butler mood board contest, Allison! I’ll post as many entries as I can fit in today, and then that’s it, the contest will wrap up and tomorrow we’ll all get to vote for our new winners. Yeah!

Mood Board Contest: Bold Sitting Room by Kelly Johnson

If you love bold design, this sitting room is for you. Black, white, and green make a strong statement, and reader Kelly Johnson has no problem stepping up to design a chic space that both is vibrant and fresh.

Please click on images for a larger view.

Name: Kelly Johnson
Occupation: housewife
State/Country: Texas, USA
Theme: Black, white and kelly green sitting room
Inspiration: I was inspired by the vintage fabric in the center of the board. The combination of the floral black and white print with the bold kelly green stripes struck my fancy. I used mainly black and white furnishings with multiple french doors leading to a shady garden. The green seen through the panes of the french doors and windows would, like the stripes in the fabric, provide a bold, green, geometrical counterpoint to the black and white patterns inside the room. I imagined a room for reading, writing letters and afternoon drinks. Thanks for hosting such a fun contest!

Contest Update & Trendy Cane

I can’t believe how many entries came in for the mood board contest. It will be exciting to see who you select as winners tomorrow. A big thanks to Amy for teaming up with me on this fun contest because without her generous spirit, all of these beautiful patterns wouldn’t be going home with four lucky winners tomorrow. So thanks, Amy!

I’m still sorting through entries, trying to determine which ones to feature here on the blog for voting, which will kick off tomorrow afternoon. Your entries blew my mind, I’m sitting here thinking about all the work that went into creating each board by hand and how guilty I feel that I cannot post them all. So I’ll just leave it at this: Whether you are part of the finals or not, please know that I appreciate all of your hard work. I mean it. And I hope that the exercise helped you to better understand and appreciate the process of pulling together a room in this manner, as it is one thing to say how you’d like your room to look, but quite another to translate those words into images, floor plans, and swatches of your choices for flooring, fabric, wallpaper, textiles, and so on, all in one place. In doing so, I hope you also had fun and challenged yourself, which may result in a new look for a room in your home. And if that happens, please send me a photo of your new room, because I’d love to see it! :)

If you need a break from the mood board contest, here’s a few pieces that I pulled together for HGTV on the whole cane trend we’re seeing in home interiors this summer. A few of you wrote in asking me for help when it comes to cane, so these articles should help get you started. The first, Trend Spotter: Cane, gives you some decorating tips, and the second, What We Love: Cane, spotlights some of my favorite products that are either made out of this sturdy material or that incorporate it somehow, either stylized versions or through cane patterns.

I’ll be back soon with more mood board entries… Stay tuned. :)
