Tara Hogan flat out rocks. Not only does she design amazing paper products and prints on etsy, but she has a graphic design studio where she churns out creative designs for clients in the form of business cards, logos, and websites. I’ve been working with her all week on my new business cards. At first, I thought I wanted robin’s egg blue and fuchsia, but you know, it feels a bit dated now, the blue feels draining and cold, and so I pleaded to Tara to not kill me, but I needed to change the entire concept. I’m sure she lives for clients like me.
So I told her about a bird in a cage…A yellow bird, and the cage and all the text on the front of the card would be white. And the background would be sky blue, that color to me represents absolute freedom. And the little bird is me because I once felt trapped in my 9-to-5 but opened the door and escaped into the world of freelance. I also had a pet bird as a child that I adored so much that I still talk about my childhood pal (just ask my poor husband who gets to hear me repeat such stories, thrilling, right honey?). Luckily, Tara thought to leave the cage without a door, and I like it that way, everything has to be tied to a deeper meaning for me or else it doesn’t work. And maybe the bird motif is a bit pass?, but please, it’s my card and I’ve decided that the bird stays. Chirp!
The geometric trellis pattern on the back is so me. I’m thinking of having her plump it up and add joints to resemble cane, but that may make it too trendy or seasonal and I’m not sure I’d hand this card out in say, the middle of October, if it felt too much like summer. Perhaps this is perfect as is. What do you think?
I’m now trying to decide on whether or not I want the color yellow somewhere else on the front. Maybe a trellis pattern along the white band on the bottom of the cage? Or maybe “8″ in decor8 in yellow? Or my name in yellow? I’m not sure. What do you think? I’d like to see the trellis pattern SOMEWHERE on the front. I consulted design guru Tara about this, so let’s see what she comes up with. Clever Tara. Hire this girl, she really is amazing to work with. And patient. Oh, and I forgot to add that the card is shiny, high-gloss, with rounded edges. It almost looks like a playing card.

Candis wrote in to tell me about her stationery blog, Paper Shop Ink, and then I spotted Orange Lola and suddenly realized that I needed to post about them again, it’s been too long and I love me some Orange Lola! Candis likes their new matta journals in bright, happy colors and patterns. I just want the cupcake with the raspberry on top. I live for yummy product shots.

I discovered Fresh Vintage, our blog of the week, through Delight, and with summer here, who can resist a flea market/yard sale junkie addicted to the thrill of the hunt? Colleen Allison, who lives just outside of Philadelphia in Chester County, PA, writes Fresh Vintage, a blog and business she started along with her two sisters, Erin and Heather. This is truly a labor of love since their work extends far beyond the blog she pens. Their little traveling company sells vintage finds at antiques markets, eBay, and via porch sales that, get this, they host at their own homes.
At first glance, I thought this was a store, but it’s porch transformed into a vintage market for a one day sale. She can live the dream of shop ownership this way, but with more freedom and far less overhead. And I love how she arranges everything, what a pretty way to present a tag sale. Classy. So many yard sales I drive by are so ugly – everything tossed on blankets, dirty and broken. Those are great for people that can see the potential in the unloved, but I think some just want to shop a sale where the potential is a bit more obvious sometimes! Good presentation makes such a difference. I would pay more to attend a sale like this. And side point: Aren’t those vintage yellow/white toile drapes gorgeous? I wish she had more, I want them.
I love all of her sweet little vignettes, especially the bar cart, and the obvious care she put into creating them. Isn’t it great to see creative people living their dreams in often the most unexpected ways? Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Let that thought take you into the weekend. It’s a strong statement because it involves being proactive and challenging yourself, not settling on what you have, shaking off limitations, looking at things that seem impossible and thinking of a new road to take to reach the goal you thought impossible. Maybe you’re just on the wrong road.

decor8 reader Anna needs your help. Here’s what she writes, “I thought you and your readers might be able to help me with a decision. My husband and I are about to build our first house and I’m trying to decide on a kitchen. I’ve thought that I wanted a simple white kitchen but I’ve since seen pictures of navy blue kitchens and now I’m wondering about that. I love the navy but I’m not sure if I’ll get sick of it or it will date. Here are a couple of the images I’ve seen and there’s also an image of what we want our open plan living/kitchen area to look like (maybe in navy though).
