Design Star *Week 1*

What did you think of the first episode of Design Star last night? Per the request of Becky and Paola, I’ll post a weekly open thread each Monday so those of you who are DS viewers can dish about the show. I struggled through last season, so I’m hoping that season 2 brings a bit more drama and decent design so we can at least have a little fun watching it and maybe learn a few things. I’m also hoping for a little character bonding to happen because if a viewer can relate to at least one finalist, it’s a good show (at least until that finalist gets canned).

I predict a lot more drama this season, a few cat fights coming on, and with the finalists being quite an assorted bunch (two words: Josh Sparkle), I’m thinking we’ll at least have fun watching it until Project Runway kicks off.

A few snippets from the bio of Mr. Sparkles himself: His favorite designer is Versace, if he weren’t a designer he’d be a Solid Gold dancer, and the boy knows how to clog. Pair him up with finalist Christina Ray, who adores the designs of Christopher Lowell, or with Neeraja Lockart who adores Muriel Brandolini, and you just may have the recipe for good reality tv.

I wasn’t in the US last season so didn’t know what to expect. I enjoyed last night’s – just because there were quite a few intriguing personalities. I’ve already written about some of the individuals on my blog (sorry, Holly, couldn’t wait!) but haven’t yet mentioned how much I liked Vern Yip. I have no idea what his designs are like, but I thought he was a great judge, better than all of them on Top Design.

PLEASE don’t encourage Josh Sparkles. The thought of him on TV for the next year is bringing me out in hives. I’ve already had quite enough of that smiley smiley ‘I’m so enthusiastic I think I’m going to explode’ David bloke. But then we Brits don’t cope well with enthusiasm…

For the amount of time I watch David from last season on his new show, his personality doesn’t bother me all that much…I like watching it for his paintings and what he does with color. I think he’s pretty cool…I just fast forward through the lame parts courtesy of TIVO! :) I missed the first episode of this season and have had to Tivo it later, so haven’t watched it yet.

I really enjoy what last year’s winner made during the show. He uses bold colors and make them look really good with the big furniture and paintings.
