I thought Etsy was supposed to be all handmade items, not a resale place?

that’s what I thought too anon, it has gotten outta hand with people selling products that they did not handmake themselves….looks like etsy is going in a different route.

anon and ?- great point. etsy tried to get rid of the vintage category. it didn’t work because there was too much whining from vintage sellers.

It’s always so interesting how everyone who has something negative to say does so under the cloak of anonymity.

I don’t see how it could possibly hurt etsy to have a vintage category. It attracts many of the same people who enjoy the other types of products etsy offers. They are complimentary of one another. And I possibly, for the life of me, can’t see how it would offend or impose upon anyone to justify the level of bitter comments left here.

I see nothing wrong with flea market finds being sold on etsy. It gives the site diversity and many flea market finds are handmade, by someone. Like the pillows Victoria sells, and some of the blankets and linens I’ve seen at flea markets – all handmade by a grandmother somewhere many years ago. Also, flea marketing is an eco-responsible way to shop as it’s a great way to recycle items that may otherwise end up in a landfill.

Also, if you REALLY think about it, though items on etsy are handmade, where are these artists buying their materials? Buttons, threads, papers, inks, etc? All from mostly big box stores like Target and Walmart. They aren’t using handmade items to create handmade things so where do you draw the line?

I think that etsy is WISE to include flea market finds online. I think it fits in because the whole goal (I think) is to steer people away from buying brand new made in china and when you are purchasing handmade or recycled products, you are doing that.

At least somewhat, again where do etsy sellers buy the items they use to create and the fact that flea market finds were new once… Well I guess we could split hairs on this but why bother.

hi guys – sorry to stir such controversy! i honestly hadn’t posted about the etsy shop yet because i’m still figuring it all out. but i did read the do’s and don’t's and i don’t think i’ve broken any rules. i really do feel like selling vintage is a form of recycling (and vintage is a vague term – some of it is really not that old). i am in love with etsy and the handcrafted items on there (as I have promoted on my site so often), but so many people were asking me what i was doing with the ‘old’ stuff as i redecorated over and over, i thought y’all might like to peruse what i was getting rid of and i think everything is pretty inexpensive.

if the consensus turns out to be that people aren’t into it, i’ll take down the site – sound okay?

thanks for posting holly and for your support!

I removed my last comment because I decided to take this conversation off line.

But I hope Victoria doesn’t take her store away because there are so many great vintage sellers on etsy and now that Victoria is there, it’s growing into a nice little family of shops offering quality flea market finds.

    Keep your store, girl!!

Hi Another Shade of Grey – I agree with you, I think that there is room for everyone.

Hi, my reaction was the same as some of the above folks, but I’m not saying anyone shouldn’t be selling on etsy – I just think that selling last season’s anthropologie pillow on etsy is a little different than having a stock of thrift finds or bulk buttons for sale. There should be some dividing line on this stuff, but I don’t know how you draw it.

anon – i understand completely, and questioned it myself. i was going to remove it, but someone bought it! i will pay special attention to what i post, as i want to keep the integrity of what etsy has created and handmade wares special, too.

    i apologize for any offense!

The key is that they use the first tag of “vintage” when listing their items.

    From the TOU:

Do list your item in the appropriate category and only with relevant tags.

    From the FAQ:

    How do Categories work?
Categories are all based on tags. The first tag on your item is its top-level category. You choose this from a drop-down menu, and it’s automatically added to your item as the first tag.

    What are Related Tags?
Whenever you enter a specific tag, we look it up and present you with the most popular tags that have been used in conjunction with the one you entered.

Feel free to write to me on Etsy if you have any questions about this – It is a touchy topic :)
