Today has been one of the single most exciting days in my life thanks to the Boston Globe. I’d like to thank Meaghan and Hayley for everything. I have to admit, I didn’t see the paper until this afternoon after my mother called in asking if I was insane for not racing out this morning to pick up a copy. Uh apparently yes, thanks mom.

It took that call from a very proud mom telling me about her trip to the coffee shop this morning where she proceeded to show it to everyone that I realized maybe I was taking this whole press thing a little too lightly. At that, I headed to Starbucks to grab a copy. All composed and non-chalent, I opened the paper and the moment all the color and pattern from the front page of Style & Arts jumped out at me, I burst into happy tears. Yup, right there in the land of Vente lattes and GrandeMochafrappawhatevers. But more than a pretty layout, writer Meaghan really nailed it in the article — from how I feel about those I feature on decor8, the importance of design in my life, and all the great “creators” out there that I’m proud to associate with here in our online design community each day.

Since I’ve been answering emails from Globe readers today about many of the products and people mentioned in the article, I thought it would be handy to link everything below so if you’re coming over from the Globe you can easily access what was highlighted in just a few quick clicks.

Congrats Holly..I’m always following your pics on flickr and end up referring back to your blog for more in-depth look at what the pic is really about. You have a great sense of allowing design to be what anyone will allow it to be…love that you have a proud mom!
January 25th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Great article! Didn’t you pose the question a few weeks ago that maybe blogs were competing with/replacing magazines? I believe the Boston Globe just answered that for you!
January 25th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Thank you everyone! Yay for us all, because this may have been a feature about me and decor8 but imagine all the great artists and designers that people can now find and be touched by. So many people do not even know this “blogging world” exists, but with exposure on this scale, that is bound to change.
I wanted to reply to your comment JCaroline as I write for magazines in addition to this blog and think that both have their own unique space and audience and I don’t see that changing at all. Sure, some magazines may have to step up their game a bit because bloggers are now on the web sourcing products and can write about them faster, but I think most people (me included) still get excited over print materials than things they see online. I save all of my issues of Domino magazine, Living Etc., Selvedge, for this very reason — there’s nothing like having something physical in my hands to read and carry along with me during my travels. I can’t imagine going to an airport to an empty newsstand. I would have a nervous breakdown without magazines.
I think bloggers and magazines are both of great benefit but I’m the first to admit that there’s nothing like cracking open a fresh copy of your favorite magazine, grabbing a cup of tea, and sinking into a cozy chair.

Jenny you are my biggest fan!! That is so cool, thank you for doing that I’m really flattered. I wish I had purchased a few extra copies now, I don’t have enough to send to my family — I didn’t even consider that, I was in a state of shock/daze I think. I also wanted to send a hard copy to Michelle, Marisa, and Cathy who were all quoted – but lucky for me Cathy picked one up down in NY. I spaced.
January 26th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Saw you in the Globe. Congrats! By the way, we share a last name.

Great article (and picture!)
Congratulations!!!!
January 27th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Oopsy. Don’t mean to get you in trouble with your magazine bosses! You’re right, magazines won’t go away (I like them too- maybe the trashy ones more than I should). But blogs definitely can report things faster and provide an interaction and an exchange with your audience that magazines currently don’t. I am just so excited to see mainstream media recognize this exciting medium and the accomplishments of someone like you. With a lot of talent and a computer, you now share your ideas with the world and are being recognized for it. That’s pretty cool.
January 27th, 2008 at 12:59 am

jcaroline – I agree with you there and don’t worry, I have no bosses — that’s the beauty of freelance and why I went off on my own in the first place. :)
Hi Paola – you’re never to late, your encouraging words are always appreciated. I think about you a lot and always visit your blog for updates on life in Seattle vs. your native Notting Hill.
