I loved the Mother/Daughter feature in Domino this month, didn’t you? It was fresh and totally fun to read, and now it’s online for those of you that do not have access to the print copy. And on the subject of mother/daughter decor, do you decorate like your mother or see some similarities in how you pull together your rooms?
How did your mother decorate your family home?
These rooms are great, and there’s one of my favorite colors making it’s appearance. Oh how much I adore blue. Turquoise, whether pale, medium, or dark is absolutely my favorite color. Paired with pink and yellow with touches of black and loads of pure white, oh my!
My mom loved to shop but also made a lot of things, she liked to oil paint in her spare time and also enjoyed sewing so our pillows and curtains and such were all by her own hand. She also loved to arrange flowers, she was trained as a floral designer, so she was constantly pulling together arrangements. This extended to our yard as well, you could find her planting and pruning almost daily. She loves Asian decor, we had bamboo and cane furniture (my first bedroom set as a little girl) was white wood with cane on the front of the drawers with bamboo accents, she stenciled, loved wallpaper (gold, shiny, floral, flocked), and we had a huge Hollywood Regency theme going on for most of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Back then I didn’t know what to call her decorating style, it always felt so eclectic to me but now I can easily compare it to Hollywood Regency, though not quite as over the top. But we had a gold sofa that looked like a silk kimono. She would use shells and starfish as accents, stack books on the coffee table, shop flea markets… I can see her influence now as I am the lady of my own house. We don’t have the exact same taste but I would own lots of the things I grew up around so I guess that’s a good thing. Minus the golden sofa. Blue was also her favorite color now that I think about it. She used it frequently. She also liked red, a color I barely use in my home as I’m not naturally attracted to red.
What about you? Does Like Mother Like Daughter apply when it comes to how you decorate?

love the mother daughter theme here, and i too can’t get enough of delicious blues lately!
my daughter’s claim they’ll never decorate like me, but i see bits of my influence emerging here and there.
my own mom and i – complete opposites!

I loved this story too! I believe it is from Domino 2005. I think it was in the first issue that came out. I haven’t seen my new issue yet–are they recycling stories?

I love that entryway with the turquoise door. I’ve always been drawn to blues it seems – they’re so calming. My style is pretty different from my mom’s, but I’m noticing my latest obsession with antiques as coming from her. She used to drag me along on antiquing expeditions when I was younger! Now I love going.

It is strange to me, being from a rural impoverished area my mother did very little “decorating” even now. I always wonder how I came away from there with a weird technical modern mix in my style. One of my sons seems to have the same sense as do I.

I really enjoyed these photos but this is from the 1st issue. Why would they re-print it?

If you ask my mother, I believe she would say we have totally different styles, and she really doesn’t like my taste. But I think she gets blinded by my love for retro details like 70′s prints and 50′s lamps, and doesn’t see the fact that we are both drawn to neutral colours and tend to bring nature inside through little stills with pine cones, dried vegetables and rounded stones. And we both collect quite strange things (like almond grinders, glass bottles and old alarm clocks). That being said, I’m not impressed with her style at all. :-D

I love that picture of Celerie Kemble’s office – those shades of turquoise are so pretty, and I’m not usually a blue-lovin’ kind of gal. But I do love turquoise with orange!
I definitely see more of my Mom’s influence now that I am older. I am definitely more modern than she is, but I think what you grow up around definitely has an influence on you.

Turquoise is the color of the day, I think! Just re-did my powder room in Embellish Blue from Behr and chocolate brown accents. Love it, and its very striking- like the door in the article. It puts a smile on my face every time I walk by.

My mum & I have very similar tastes when it comes to colours though I prefer very neutral walls on which to hang warm, colourful & ecclectic works of art. My plants (which are many & massive) are the only green things you’ll find in my home (outside the refrigerator) whereas my mum has green walls, fewer plants & chooses to make her more elegant furnishings her focal points. Our tolerances for clutter (which are equally vast) come from different places as well; she collects and displays loads of precious things she can’t bring herself to use & I amass and must organize, in a very visually present & appealing way, all of the things I need & love to use. My mum & I both dream of open concept living, for very different reasons again, but can’t seem to escape the appeal of more traditional, 2 story, century homes.

Each one is so beautiful. I absolutely adore the white flooring, and the daughters white living room. The entryway with the gold mirror is fab as well. Great, great, great!!!

Oh, hell, no, I don’t decorate like my ex-hippie, mega practical mom. :p I do go with everything in my house must have a purpose, otherwise it is a useless dust collector, but that’s about it.

truedesign: some of the images posted here are from last year, but some, like the foyer, are from this issue.
i really enjoy that they’ve made this a yearly thing for mothers day. i loved the mom/daughter foyers the most, i’d take either one!
my mom and i have waaaay different taste: she’s more chintzy-Southern, French-country, bedskirts and placemats…..while I’m much more modern, mid-century, thrift/flea market. but the funny thing is– i can always count on her to pick out things i like when we go antiquing!

My mom and I have quite different decorating tastes. I still remember her shocked face when I came home with 30 lbs of pebbles to use as centerpieces for my wedding. (They were river pebbles, to accent the moss potted flowers!)

My daughter is the one who introduced me to your blog, which now I check quite frequently. She is a vintage modern girl and I prefer a bit more floof mixed in. We both love tattered treasures though and enjoy sifting through trash for treasure.
