I totally need bedroom inspiration today! What about you? Are you also sleeping in a boring room like I am? Currently my walls are white, curtains are white linen, bed is white, bedspread is white, it’s too safe in there. It feels like a hospital. Of course, I just moved in but that was in August and we’re in October so the “Just Moved In” excuse is starting to no longer work. I’m always looking to paint my bedroom, at least the wall behind the bed, a gorgeous gray not because everyone else seems to be hot on gray lately but because it’s been the one consistent wall color in my dozens of inspiration books and folders that stands out for me.
For the bedroom, I thinking cozy, warm, relaxing…
This is the current state of affairs. It’s total hospital chic, am I right?
Frankly, I am overwhelmed with ideas! I’m also still very unsure as to where to shop in my new country… in Germany, I have about 5% of the decor options as I do back home in America where you can zip over to a myriad of stores to find exactly what you fancy in a single day. Not that I like that kind of “design in a day” mentality but the point is that it’s there if you need it. Here, shops take 8-10 weeks (or more, sometimes 12 weeks) for furniture orders, they tend to carry 10 of the ’standard’ brands that are in all of the little boutique shops and though they are lovely, they are expensive, and I really want a few select items that I just cannot find here for the life of me. For instance, I’m still having a horrible time finding kilim rugs for my apartment, they are either too big, too new (I only want a vintage one from Anatolia), or over 1,000- Euros for standard 5 x 7 — and that my friends is just nuts. My Turkish girlfriend told me tells me that you can fly to Istanbul from here in a few hours and find these rugs everywhere for 1/4 of that price (or less!). You can pretty much get a rug and a trip to Turkey for the price that you’d pay for just a rug if purchased in Germany. Um… Maybe this calls for a flight to Istanbul? I digress. Back to the bedroom…

I have been trying to find fabric to match the paper in the upper right corner for months and I found it shown on the left side. Love this fabric, perfect for a little something in the bedroom. Maybe a small cushion?
I think my decor folder is too large so now I’m starting to go through the process of elimination. These photos show what my coffee table looks like today. I keep adding and subtracting images and colors, the process of elimination is a beautiful thing.
I want to incorporate a gray accent wall perhaps with some large scale subtle geometric pattern on it stenciled in a very pale silver, rich texture, some pattern but mostly stripes (think men’s suits) for the bed, black, beige, white, wood tones, faux grey fur throw, maybe some aged leather to warm it up… I have white linen drapes so I may add a border along bottom in velvet, perhaps a border I can remove for Spring? Let’s see where all of these ideas lead me For now, I have my mood board together… I’m putting it out there. Now it’s time to execute. Give me a month and I’ll be back with the results (sometime before Turkey Day).
How are you doing with your bedroom decor? Does it need help? Is it boring like mine or are you satisfied with it?

Bedrooms are tough—for me I feel like it is the last holdout of ugly because the ‘public’ rooms are where I spend most of my time and are also what visitors see…all the ’stepchild’ furniture gets relegated to the bedroom.
But I LOVE the boards you’ve put together! They feel so warm and inviting yet clean and spare at the same time. Can’t wait to see how things come together :)

Boy, does it… I’ve live there for 3 years and it has no curtains yet, everything is either white or beige.
I do have this wall art I love. It is the sillouhette of dandelions on white on top of a brown canvas, I would like to work around that. I guess blue would be a no-brainer, but that is not my color.
What color would you use with brown?
thanks

sarah jane and bentley: Hi! The light is called BLOOM and is available in black or white from Ligne Roset. It was one my husband and I saw in their showroom window while passing by one day and we both simultaneously looked at each other and said, “There’s the final light we need!”… No kidding, it was the funniest thing ever. :) And so it went home with us, same day. Total shotgun decision but we love it. Our guests think it’s “weird”, “strange”, “odd” and then when we say we bought it at Ligne Roset the replies change to “Oh wow, yeah it is weird but a GOOD weird”, etc. Funny how name dropping changes opinion!

I am at this moment waiting for the handyman to finish my new wardrope so I can paint the wall behind the bed and move back into my bedroom. It is going to be this blue/green soft color and I have and idea in my head of three 12×12 scrap-art-painting that I want to make with our wedding pics and have above the bed … its a work in progres, but I am still looking for a blanket to put on the bed.. :)

I have been living in my new home for a year, and although the rest of the house has improved, the bedroom is lagging. I did manage to paint an accent wall behind the bed as you are wanting — a bright orange to compliment a sunny duvet cover and shams I got on clearance at Anthropologie. Found a great little discontinued rug there, too, that I use by my bed. A little vintage bent plywood and metal chair that I found at an estate sale, and a vintage gooseneck lamp that I found there too, sits by my bed for lack of a bedside table. Aside from a couple of framed photos, the walls remain bare, the rest of the room unpainted, and no dresser. Still looking for that. It’s a good start, but it needs much more. Another rug, accessories, curtains, etc.
I like the colors you are working with for your room. Timeless, and classic. I like the masculinity combined with softness. Looks very comfortable. Also it is a design that probably appeals to your husband, yes? Can’t wait to see the finished project. Maybe it will inspire me to finish mine!

You have such great ideas; just a quick add, don’t forget the ceiling in bedrooms is a great place to do something, as it is what you see a lot—-maybe wallpapering with a light (white) patterned and textured—isn’t easy to wallpaper ceilings, but great effect—subtle maybe no color, just texture. You have great inspirations going and will find the perfect balance.
Can’t wait to see what you do :)

Wow, what a timely post! I’m in the midst of a bedroom update and just posted a page on my own blog a style board I created with ideas to move forward with.
I think the natural route is perfect for you. You have a very natural, clean and handmade aesthetic in the rest of your decor. I’m a huge fan of texture in the bedroom. I’m taking a more colorful approach to my room because I have a really bright colorful home overall. Good luck and I can’t wait to see what you do with it!

I live in a studio apartment and my ‘bedroom’ is a space created under a built in loft that is too close to the ceiling to sleep in for me! I have vintage curtains and a wall divider establishing my sleeping nook. I bought some deer antlers mounted on a wooden heart at the neighbor’s garage sale yesterday I am going to hang above my bed. I love cozy spaces for sleeping in. My style is a gathering of loved items over time. I’m okay with the bare, intrigued how life fills in the blanks.
I just started reading your blog after I read your interview for etsy buyer. I am sensing a new site addiction! :~)

Well my whole apartment is very tough, but the bedroom trumps it all. I just moved from Sudan to Washington, DC and forgot how much more complicated decorating an apartment can be versus a little HUT! I saw a picture and got really inspired. I painted the walls, got an awesome headboard from Ikea and spray painted that but now I’m COMPLETELY stuck with what to do next (see link for where I am now). Now, i’m just trying to take it easy and see what other pieces I can find to fit the room.

just go to istanbul, then you can get a bunch of the little things that you need. and you can blog about it, so we’ll benefit too.
as for living there for a couple of months and not having your bedroom finished, my husband and i have lived in our house for 3.5 years. can’t believe it’s been that long. when we moved in, we got some curtains I didn’t really like and had them in the living room. we also had a bland bedroom. i finally had enough and decided to use the bedroom curtains in the living room and used the living room curtains temporarily in the bedroom. what a difference the shift made. the asian-style curtains look great in the bedroom and has also helped me decide where i can put some of my china/hong kong finds from last year. the curtains in the living room now aren’t right for the space, but have brightened it up and convinced my husband that light curtains will work better.

I love my room!! Since I have a roommate it was necessary to make sure that my room was a place I could live in, too! Most of it has traveled with me from my parents, but I’ve still managed to pick up a lot of great stuff on Craigslist and at thrift stores and antique malls that really speaks to ME. The bed and the desk are hand me down, but I’ve gotten a great old record cabinet to use as a tv stand and have a couple of neat little wire frame mid century patio tables that I’m using as bedside tables. And the walls are covered (but not as covered as I’d like). I think if you’re a showoff like me, then you have to design your bedroom too, because you’re going to show that to people when they visit, too!

We built a timber frame home 2 years ago and our bedroom is still very very undecorated. I will just continue to visit and get inspiration! Thanks Holly!

You have the perfect blank canvas. I think it would be great to paint the ceiling pale gray (draw the eye up ). Add some pale gray trim to the white curtains. Love the calm color palate.
My bedroom is butter yellow with accents of green and pale blue.
I have a french sofa for a foot board and a large frame less mirrior as the head board ( brings in light). Madonna and child collection of framed art(all antique). It does take time to create such a private space. Mine is complete after 3 years.
Have fun !!!

Of course, I have yet to do anything but paint and hang curtains, but one of these days I’ll get around to adding a few splashes of color (yellow and sky blue, I think). I also have some starburst mirrors to hang above the dresser one day soon. Anyway, I say go for it, you will love it. I dont have a headboard (I would like to eventually get one) and the wall seems so big behind the bed.
On the wall across from my bed, I have three photos framed. So I want something interesting, creative, and fun to put on the wall behind the bed.
Any kind of ideas for creative things to put above the bed?!

Hi Holly,
You have nice light in your room. I’ve added interest to my mainly white bedroom (which is similar in size to yours) by hanging a large (4′x4′) colorful (framed) original work of art by a local Canadian painter (are there any nice art galleries in your little town?), an ornately-framed guilded mirror, a Persian rug and a “luxurious-looking” blanket at the foot of my bed. I’ve also sewn several 5-inch strings of jewel-toned beads to dangle from a simple IKEA floor lamp to create something unique and personal.
As an art consultant, I’m a big fan of original artwork for decorating and adding energy to a room.
The inspiration board you put together looks extremely inviting, understatedly glamorous and restful.
Thanks as always for the blog, and have fun!

I sure know the “I just moved in” excuse…I moved into my apartment at the end of August and haven’t even started on the bedroom!
At the moment, the walls are a very blah Navajo White with a strange cornflower blue trim. Very very ugh. But I have permission from the landlord to paint, so it’s either going to go to a very light blue, or a bright white. It’s a small, boxy room so it can’t be a dark color at all.
I had a very classic, girly design scheme in mind, but then I bought a large classroom map of Brooklyn and Staten Island…so now I’m going to have to go for something a bit more modern and design based.
ARGH! So much work to be done!

My bedroom is about to undergo a total overhaul. We are getting rid of every thing in it. As excited as I am, I am finding the options sort of paralyzing. I know how I want it to feel but getting my husband to approve all of my ideas is the tricky part. Mixing old with new isnt something he can visualize.
Another tricky area is how decidely suburban our room is. Rectangle, 3 windows (leaving one wall unsemetrical) no character at all. Blah. The misson is to make it warm, relaxing, vibrant and to finally look like us.

Alina – I am completely in love with brown + some shade of VIOLET right now. Perhaps raspberry, plum, magenta? i guess i like the thought of it because it’s not as “expected” as some shade of blue.
Back to the blog topic :) — some four years after moving into the house, my bedroom is in progress, but not quite done. I first painted my bedroom purple, then bluish gray, and now I’ve settled on a very safe color by Behr called “Raffia Cream” which is basically just tan. I incorporated what I call “volcanic” colors — pops of sienna (lava orange), turquoise (ocean), and old IKEA side cabinets painted glossy black (rock).

That’s interesting about the rugs in Germany. With the large Turkish population there, maybe you’ll eventually find some bargains. Of course, a trip to Istanbul would be great too. I did not even dip a toe into the whole rug thing while there (too overwhelming), but would you ever be inspired!
If a trip to Turkey is not in the cards, how about the Balkans? I got a great kilim in Kotor, Montenegro.
My bedroom problems are two-fold. One, an exercise bike must be in there for myriad reasons (it IS our winter exercise, but unfortunately husband uses it to drape laundry!). I need to find a screen for it.
Two is patience: For reasons of economics and preference, I purchase vintage furniture, and finding the right piece(s) takes time, sigh. So it seems the bedroom is in a constant state of limbo. I try to take solace in the great view of trees I have.
Also, my temporary challenge is to warm up the blue/green tones for winter–any suggestions?

Your light fixture is very interesting, and it must cast such lovely light shadows in the room at night. Mixing gray with aged leather is comforting, yet elegant — like your pretty inspiration boards!
My husband and I are about to move, so I’m using that excuse for our half-completed bedroom ;) After the move, I really need to make a headboard. My favorite part of the bedroom is this tall topiary tree that I have on top of my nightstand. To think of it, however, it is sad that our bedroom always gets the least attention when I am decorating….

Oh I love your inspiration thingies both here and at haus maus :)
I was looking around my bedroom a while back and I didn’t like it. But as you say it can get quite overwhelming quite fast and I just lose the will to do anything at all. So I’m doing one bit at the time.
I added some plants. Then I added some candles. Then I changed the linens and added some cushions. I still want to change it completely (which will involve painting the wood, the walls, finding new wardrobe and shelves etc) but at least there are bits now that I love. I found I can only focus properly at one project at a time.
I think you did a wonderful job with your hall and living room and I’m sure your bedroom will be the same :) It might take a bit longer, but I’m sure you will get there eventually :)
October 27th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I have had a deep grey bedroom…one wall was painted in a textured, deep blue-grey and three others were a softer version.
Currently my bedroom is a deep grey-blue…I found a fabric I loved, made my bedspread, then found a patterned fabric in greyblue/mustard diamond pattern for an accent chair that I re-upholstered.
I think you could find some beautiful greys…if it feels too cold, try what I did to soften my cranberry dining room walls – glaze witha combination of copper, bronze and gold. Done with a light hand, you could create a beautiful layered look.
If you want pattern, tape off diamonds or squares and appy the glaze in different directions in each section – don’t change the color – just the direction you paint. It will create subtle variations.
Happy decorating – can’t wait to see it finished!

Ah the bedroom. For me, this was the room in my fixer upper house that needed the most attention and so about a year & a half ago I got too it. Was actually going to post about it soon, the before, during and where I am now.. close but not quite finished.
I had wood paneling and two strange light fixtures that had three big movable lights on them… oh they were awful. I emptied the room, tore down the paneling, had the room re-wired and can lights put in and have since painted walls, ceiling, closet interior and put up a closet organizer and got new bedding. I am about 25% done with the base moulding and I am pretty much done as far as furniture goes. Oh, I also refinished the hardwood floors to a dark cherry mahogany color.
I was sitting in bed just this weekend thinking I really, really want to have the room finished and NEED some artwork and accessories up. Here’s the rest of my to do list in there (hopefully will be done b4 txgvg as well!):
Finish base moulding
Put up crown moulding
Clean and repaint fireplace bricks, clean fp out and get accessory screen for in front
Wall paper for above fp
Artwork for several walls
Finish sewing curtains and hang them!!
New closet doors
Install new bedroom doors
whew! I still have a ways to go. This post got me thinking and definitely is keeping me inspired to keep going!!

My bedroom is totally stuck. We moved into our house last December, but as it was our first, and the original portion was built in 1930 and not updated since the early ’80’s, we’ve had to do a TON of work. Like other said, since it’s private and not public space, it’s kindof been delegated to last, unfortunately! I did buy a spring/summer duvet cover, and we do have curtains (the andrea ones in green/brown from IKEA), but it’s just plain, plain, plain, and way too big, since it’s in the addition part of the house. I love the closet space and master bath, but I need some serious help in decorating it. I don’t even have any inspiration materials yet. I guess I should start there!

I don’t know how are the shops in Germany, but in France you can find a lot of things without waiting a long time to deliver them…

I totally agree – decorating bedrooms (as well as all those other rooms) is really hard. I started very inspired by a bedroom I had seen and put some of that inspiration in my room (mainly the color – turquiose), but after painting the walls and spraying a headboard, I’m stumped on what to do next. It’s a bit overwhelming how much more I need to do to make this as cosy as I want it to be, but I’ve decided not to stress about it and just continue to go with whatever inspires me next (that won’t clash with what I have going on now). See picture in the link below.

My bedroom design in my head is fabulous, and unaffordable right now. The actual bedroom is pretty nice, in a still-using-husband’s-cheap-bachelor-furniture kind of way… We have a white & woodsy/grassy brown thing going on that works really well.
How about, as a starting point, replacing the white with a subtle monochrome that transitions will from the living room? I think it’s tough to make white work in small spaces. It works great in your living room, it seems like that’s mainly due to all the little touches and objets creating lots of visual diversity and smatterings of color–you may not want as much *stuff* and visual diversity in the bedroom.
Alternately, you could get instant color and atmosphere by switching to colorful curtains–I think that way you could keep everything else white, yet immediately shift from the hospital look, and get an elegant effect. It might be easier than painting–for one thing you probably can’t paint that radiator, can you? You could follow it up with a couple pretty cushions on the bed to draw the color in. I know you’re probably loathe to change curtains since those ones are new aren’t they, but it might be the easiest option. As always if the room feels long consider a warm color, if it feels short consider a cool color–it’s hard to tell from the picture.

Why is it we tend to save the bedroom for last when decorating? It is the room that recharges us the most! I have had such a great flea market/thrift store weekend that my bedroom is starting to ’speak’ to me today. My husband is away so I can’t wait to get in a big old pile of paint, fabric and artwork until I get it just right.
One of the best things I’ve learned from you is to be patient when waiting for the right things to appear. The lovely pieces you have scored online have helped me get over my need for instant decorating gratification. Sometimes the right thing takes longer to arrive but is so worth the wait!

You could introduce grey into the room by sewing a panel of grey fabric into the base of the curtain. This will give the room more depth instantly & you could then back it up with the feature wall, a few cushions & perhaps a rug of sorts. Also if you choose slight variations of warm grey, say lighter through to darker, & different textures, it will create visual interest & look more natural & less matchey matchey.

Have you found a stencil you like for the accent wall? Sunny’s Goodtime Paints in Richmond, VA, has a number of really cute stencils: http://www.sunnys-paint.com/stencils/ (the Hannah – Whole stencil complements your super cute paper swatch).
Have you thought about wallpapering your accent wall? Cole & Son’s Vintage Glamour Collection has a few grey-toned papers you might love (like the Belgravia with the greys, pale blue, and pale green, or the grey trellis prints): http://www.cole-and-son.com/collection_detail.asp?CollectionID=107.
Keep us posted on the bedroom redo! I need some serious motivation to attack my own!

bored with it would be an understatement for me. it is currently pretty much storage and i hate it and have decided to turn it into a place where i can relax and turn off.
i finally ordered a new foam mattress last week and am now on the hunt for a bed.
thankfully i know what i want, its just a matter of finding it.
i know i want a platform but i also am being drawn towards canopies. i spent two hours trolling the internet last night and i am on a serious b u d g e t, so there were options but the prices do not fit my world.
the rich calm colors that are calling out to me are similar to those in this room from nov’s met home
http://www.pointclickhome.com/image/tid/4219?page=11
so the search continues and thankfully i don’t have your delima of not having the retail sources that you need here in chicago

the bedroom is a hard one…
i’ve always loved the idea of a white bedroom, white sheets, etc. but you’re right, it can look like a hospital. so i was thinking of replacing our dull carpet with dark brown hardwood, and going with a forest kind-of theme. i love this forest wall mural:
http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/10/bride-and-wolfe.html
maybe add a top sheet in that pear green color, bring some branches in. i don’t know….the bedroom is such a tough room!

Your room and mine have the same hospital theme. My mom picked pink paint for my room *smirk* anyway, I’m trying to spruce the entire idea a bit more. And I’m more than smiling in delight right now. Thanks for sharing your design inspirations. :)

I am finding it very hard to decide what artwork to put in my bedroom ? nothing seems to look quite right above the bed… Thought I was the only one, but it seems not! I am in the process though of revamping some beautiful bedside table, and am quite pleased with how they are turning out ? maybe that will inspire me to finish that room…

I think you’re off to a fantastic start with that fabulous inspiration board! I loathe my bedroom decor right now. We have zero storage and the layout is not the most appealing but the most efficient for us right now. It’s a rental and I’m not sure where we’ll be when our lease is up so I don’t want to spend too much time or money on it now. This weekend I spruced it up a bit with this display (http://lovejoleen.typepad.com/photography/2008/10/moving-forward.html) but I’d love to do more. I just bought the Domino book and I think it’s helping me at least put a name to my style and the aesthetic I am going for. :) Good luck and keep us posted on your transformation! :)

holly, I am a enthusiastic german reader of your two blogs haus maus and decor 8. I’m very impressed by your large assortment of german interio- and decorstores at haus maus. So many adresses in such a short time – wow!
Now I have read your comments about your problems to find and buy fitments in germany. :) IT IS A PROBLEM: appalling service and the most things are very expensive, that’s true. Do you know, how we call this problem in germany? “Servicewueste Deutschland”, that means service-desert germany… .
And that’s the reason, why every german flat is arranged with a lot of IKEA stuff. How boring. So every day we are on the trip to finde some oases in this bleak desert.
In the end: sorry for my awful english. It’s embarrassing, I know.

You did, indeed, manage to find the perfect fabric for that wallpaper..very nice! Consider maybe framing it or mounting it on canvas and placing it on the gray accent wall to really make it special. i just did a spur of the moment bedroom refresh at home on Sunday and it feels wonderful to climb in bed and wake up to it. So I think you’ll love yours…you have a great jumping off point and once you get started, things should begin falling into place. good luck!

We have white bedroom, but the wall behind the bed is creamy-stone colored and handpainted. Then I added (stncilled) golden butterflies flying all in one direction. I love gold because it`s metallic and as small butterflies, it does n`t look tacky. Rather gives them “alive” feeling – reflecting light. Butterflies have very important symbolic meaning in my life, so I wanted to have them on my wall, so I can see these all the time.
We also got a shelf behind the bed – same height as the bed -so you can put your book or something there. And I didn ?t like any night tables……..
Soon I have something beautiful for display (bought from lapomme from Etsy) on the shelf, then I`m going to take some photos and blog about it as well.

My bedroom is also “the last frontier” of my house. It’s hard to get motivated to decorate something when it’s usually covered in dirty clothes with a centerpiece of an unmade bed! This past weekend, I tidied up a bit and motivated myself to hang some really elegant-cozy floor to ceiling curtains. It made all the difference in the world. The space feels so much warmer and more finished now.

Very timely topic as I just decided on a paint color for my bedroom – asparagus! I’ve been searching for a duvet cover for months and finally settled on a dark tan with faint stripes, so a soft green wall color should work well. I’ll be anxious to see your finished product which I’m sure will be as lovely as the rest of your apartment!

Hi Holly,
I’ve been wanting to do a gray accent wall behind my bed for a while now. One consideration, are those trees outside your window deciduous or green year round?
I like the idea of a wallpaper accent wall because I think it could be dramatic alongside the window view. Here’s an example: http://www.neishacrosland.com/wallpaper/papersfive/flamenco.html
or this: http://www.neishacrosland.com/wallpaper/paperssix/leaf.html
or if you want something more masculine you could do a textured raffia: http://www.neishacrosland.com/wallpaper/textures/raffia.html
These are just examples. i don’t know if there are stockists in your area.
How fun to have a clean slate to work from! I envy you :)

My bedroom makes me want to shoot myself. We rent, so we can’t do anything to renovate the space, which is unfortunately incredibly tiny and incredibly awkward. The closet and is long and narrow, but with a tiny door, so you pretty much look down a line of clothes with no way to maneuver them. There’s a tiny radiator kitty-corner from a window, our bed takes up the entire room, we’ve squeezed a dresser into one corner and a long narrow table for things like a lamp and phone charger stands against the wall. You walk in, you lay down, you go to sleep, and occasionally clothes wind up in giant piles because with no room to walk around (and an awkwardly-shaped closet that makes hanging things up and taking them back out difficult), sometimes it’s easier to pitch them on the floor. Awesome. Apparently I needed to vent more than I realized. Any suggestions/solutions are warmly welcomed!!!

I have a TOO FULL bedroom. I don’t know what to do, it’s just making me crazy..! The fact is that the closet is too big and it occupies most of the space. Then I have a big desk, a big chest where I put the TV. It is all so OPPRESSIVE. Furtunatly, about a month ago I re-arranged my room a little better: I just tried to create a game of lights that I like at the moment, but I know that it would not lasts forever..! The problem is that I just can’t give up to all my stuff!? To me, everything has a meaning, everything is important (I say EVERYTHING… also a little piece of paper, a ribbon, a picture, every decoration or memento, souvenir… I know… I’m crazy…). What can I do?!
Then…I really like your ideas… And I just can’t wait to see your bedroom..!

Also, i noticed some posts say that decorating the bedroom (or any room for that matter) can be hard for renters. Would love if anyone has decorator suggestions for renters?!

holly, don’t feel bad…we’ve been in our new house for a year and a half and i still just have a plain old white comfortor thrown across the bed! i can’t even decide on bedding! i have beautiful chocolate brown walls (fab if you’re a nap taker!) and an orange sofa in there and that’s as far as i’ve gotten. i agree with you 100% regarding doing it all in a day…it seems when i do something impulsive, i regret the purchase later…keep up your fabulous inspiration!!!!
October 28th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Oddly enough, I was just thinking about your bedroom today, wondering what you were going to do with it, and trying to picture what it currently looked like! How weird.
Definitely go with some color, Holly! Why not get matching bedside table lamps, in a light blue color or something? Or some yellow accents? What you have up there now will probably be fab when it’s not on paper, but it looks very monotone, and you’ve done a good job of brightening up your livingroom a bit, so why not in there, too?
I shouldn’t talk. My bedroom is mostly a wreck. But I’ve given up on it. I always say that, but we’re moving again next year. I need somewhere more LONG TERM in order to decorate, like what you’ve got. It’s too tough trying to put months of effort in for nothing.

Hi Holly!
I don’t think your bedroom looks boring. On the contrary, I think it looks restful! I love a very simple bedroom. Right now I don’t have a bedroom because I live in a studio. But when I do get a bedroom again, I’m going to have a bed and a lamp, that’s it. I feel strongly that a bedroom is just for rest and lovemaking and nothing should interfere.
P.S. I adore that lamp fixture! How gorgeous. Do you know its source? You’ve probably blogged about it already.

i’m liking my bedroom – it’s orderly, it’s open, it’s a pretty shade of pale green, and my dream sheets are arriving in a few weeks! We need some wall decor, but otherwise I’m fairly happy with the room.
I like your idea of a gray wall and natural wood accents. Will you have an accent color in addition to the gray? Different textures and shades of lavender would look good and seem to go with the look of the rest of the house…..looking forward to seeing what you pull together!
PS- I love the home textiles and metreware in the Gudrun Sjoedens that I think you once linked to over on HausMaus! Maybe something from there??

The beautiful relief effect of those white rosettes in the wallpaper can be translated to the bedding/pillows/curtains by means of quilting. You could achieve the same effect by quilting your white duvet with white or beige thread, doing a tone-on-tone design that would add texture, depth, and a visual detail. You could start on a small scale by doing it to a pillow cover and see how you like, if you like it, and if you want to take it further.
Let me know if you have any questions, including how to quilt

Hi Holly,
I just got back from my client’s home in San Francisco. I had selected Elephant’s Breath by Farrow & Ball for one of their wall colors. I had it matched by a local Benjamin Moore shop. It looks amazing. It’s a very soft gray with brownish tones. To look at it on the F&B web site is misleading, at least on my computer monitor, it looks purple gray and it’s not at all.
I’ll take some photos of my client’s place to send you.
Cheers!

I love nature inspired decor, especially for the bedroom. My bedroom is a shame right now, and I’ve been living in my apartment for over a year now. It’s just a bed, two dressers, and a couple piles of clothes, sigh. But my husband and I spend most our time in the living room so that’s where our money seems to go.
I am confidant that anything you decide to do with your room will be warm, stylish and just right.

I love your concept board. It’s rich with textures and patterns, but I think is missing the accent colour (or even few). Using neutral tones (warm greys) you can create cosy, warm atmosphere and with adding some accent colours as accessories your bedroom will alive. Such bedroom accessories can be cushion covers or throws, which are easy to change if you get bored of this colour.
The accent colours for grey could be burgundy red or sky blue.

Hello everyone! Thanks for your lovely comments. I didn’t include accent colors because I wanted to wait to talk to my husband about this. After our discussion, we’ve decided to go with deep plum and fuchsia. :)

Lucky for me my husband is an artist. My favorite all time painting by him hangs on a wall at the foot of the bed so I can see it when I wake up. The bedroom to me is the most personal space and should reflect “you”.
