Dash & Albert Rugs

Do you remember that Fixx song One Thing Leads to Another? Well that’s kinda of happening today with my posts, one seems to be inspiring the next. I started the day mentioning Megan, then I blogged a shop she’d featured on her blog, that shop showed Massachusetts-based Dash & Albert rugs, and now I’m blogging Dash & Albert — but I can’t help it. I really like their Cotton Woven rugs because they feel very laid back and cozy. When I was looking for a rug last year for my flat aboard, I was trying to find a vintage kilim from Turkey but I didn’t accomplish that so I came back to the states determined to snag one here to bring back over with me in May. I still have that as a goal but now I’m thinking I should grab a striped rug from D&A for my entryway and do a kilim in the dining space. Here is a photo of the entry.

I’m thinking a striped rug may look nicer (a runner) than the postage stamp currently in there from Denmark. I’m thinking of a rug with pattern and color that stands out a bit more could work. I’m not going to paint or paper the walls or do anything else to this space other than add a new runner because we plan to hunt for a larger flat this summer so I don’t want to invest in wallpaper or paint if we’re moving anyway. So for now, only a rug! My new flat will have an entry and hardwood floors and I’ll use the furniture shown here in it (minus the bench, which will most likely go in another room or on the balcony) so a new rug can just move with us.

Here are some beautiful options below from D&A and though I don’t plan to purchase any of them for my space, I’m hoping I’ll find one that I’ll settle on for the hallway by May 23rd so I can tuck it into my luggage.

I’m not a big plaid person but some of the plaids aren’t bad… Or maybe I should just stick to the kilim idea and repeat in the entry, which does concern me because a vintage kilim is something I’d rather not place in a space with dirty shoes and constant traffic. Hmmm. Or perhaps I should consider a little Madeline Weinrib action in the entry? I feel a visit to ABC Carpet & Home in NYC coming on!

Anyone have runner suggestions for my entryway? Please don’t say black and white stripes because while the idea is great but I tried that already with a runner from IKEA and it drove me absolutely bonkers because the black part showed every single speck of lint/dirt/etc. that landed on it. I’m a clean freak so I was vacuuming every 30 seconds and it made me feel like a bit of a nutcase and I’m sure my neighbors were mega annoyed by the constantly sucking sound of the vac. Also, I’m more of a flat weave girl than a thick pile/tufted/looped etc. girl because I am a bit of a klutz and tend to trip over rugs a lot so if you find a runner that is really flat and would work for my entry, please remember all of that. :)

    Hi Holly,

I’ll post this link http://www.cookiemag.com/magazine/blogs/nesting/2009/01/pixie-dust-stud.html so you can see a D&A rug in action. I LOVE it. Its comfy and washable which is key when you have messy little ones around or spilled coffee :)!

    Good luck with your decision!

I did something a little untraditional, I bought outdoor rugs for my hardwood floors. I don’t own a vaccuum, and I didn’t want to have to purchase one just because I wanted rugs either. I have one sisal rug, with fabric trim, and although it looks nice, I have to keep the trim clean by sweeping it more often than I even have to sweep my floors. The trim picks up dirt.

I purchased my outdoor rugs from either Grandin Road, http://www.grandinroad.com or Ballard Design http://www.ballarddesign.com (I can’t remember which one. My biggest one was on sale at the time too and outdoor rugs generally cost a lot less than a traditional indoor rug. They are real easy to care for and almost always a really flat weave.

I also like Home Decorators selection of rugs, http://www.homedecorators.com. The site is kind of slow, but they have a huge selection, and have a great selection of ways to search for your perfect rug.

I can’t tell if the mirror, bench and entry tree are green or not. They look green to me…anyway I highly recommend the Avondale All-Weather Indoor/Outdoor Rug from Ballard Designs in the green. We just bought it for our “mudroom” and it’s a great all-weather, high traffic runner and the price is a steal. Good luck!

…I think you should go for Madeline Weinrib. How about “Desert” (cotton), or “Ikat Chocolate” (tibetan)….and so many lovely choices. The Desert runner would look awesome!! I’m also looking for rugs for my home right now….difficult to decide, and it has to be affordable…

i have three of their rugs, including one that is 4′x6′. they’re great because i can throw them into a washing machine (laundromat) and get them clean and fresh. i love the stripes, so happy.

for the vacuuming activity, you really should get a carpet sweeper. i’m serious, it has changed my life and every crafter should have one

I have found that yoga rugs are the perfect size for an entry way. They withstand many machine washings and are low profile. I bought mine from this company, though there are probably many other options out there:http://www.barefootyoga.com/Search.bok?category=Mysore+Practice+Rugs#anchor

I see in the previous post there is a photo of the D&A rugs. On the left, there is one that is a chevron pattern that looks really fresh and light. It might even come in a different colorway. I think a pattern other than a stripe would also help accentuate the width of the space rather than just the length.

I also have to second the opinions above that washability, especially in an entryway, is key. Madeline Weinrib rugs, while outrageously beautiful, tend to be outrageously expensive…and if you spill…arggh…i don’t even want to think about it!

    Hi Holly,

I have a FLOR Tile runner in my hallway and love it! It cleans up so well and I can always interchange it with my area rug if I want to or rotate each tile for a different pattern. Mine’s made out of the “Lane Change Stripe” which matches my color scheme but I’m sure you could find something that goes well and FLOR is so inexpensive!

Ebay has some great vintage kilims. I just bought an 8×10 100% wool rug there for under $150. If the kids spill something on it, not that big of a deal…however, if it had cost me thousands, I’d be furious. I really don’t need the stress, so it was the perfect option.

OMG I love the rugs. Do they come in my color? I am still getting some design ideas when I have a place of my own. Believe me I would take a rug like this over carpet any day.

    Hi Holly!

A bit off-topic but I absolutely love when you post pictures of your home in Germany (both here and on Haus Maus)! It’s beautiful. I hope you don’t mind that I used one of your pictures in a post on kitchen inspiration on my blog?

As for rugs, have you checked out House Doctor? I love the rugs on pages 88-89 in their 2009 catalogue (http://co3dk.ipapercms.dk/HouseDoctor/EVERYDAY2009/), and they look like they fit very well with your style. Those ornamental ones look like they might be in plastic, which would be practical and easy to keep clean in a hallway.
I also love Pappelina rugs (http://www.scandinaviandesigncenter.com/Trademarks/sek0/Pappelina).

    Hope that helps. :)

My vote is for the Madeline Weinrib. I’m headed to NYC this weekend for the gift fair and a stop at ABC is on my list. I’m determined to have one of her rugs for my family room. They are beautiful. My dream rug for the living room is from her Climbers & Ramblers collection.

It’s funny how you say that one inspiring thing leads to another inspiring thing. Well I feel exactly the same about your blog! I see one beautiful post like this one and I think: “Ok, I’ll just read one more post and then go… do the laundry, wash the floors, do the dishes” and then an hour later I’m still on your site drooling over all the eye-candy you find!

Now all I want to do is decorate, re-decorate and re-re-decorate!

I’ve got a great entry rug that is a work horse, and stylish to boot! It’s a wool rug by Dash and Albert … the style is called “Cats Paw” (you will see why when you view it). I’ve had it for 3 years with 2 kids and 2 cats and it still looks great! Here is the link…(it also comes in a tan background)

I notice none of the rugs you showed are horizontal stripes. They’re all vertical stripes, which would make the hallway look narrow.

When I saw this hallway picture a while back, I thought “a yellow and gray, horizontal stripe rug would make the area seem more spacious and would be a nice contrast to the purple cushions.” When you posted the hallway picture this time, again that rug popped into my head. I’m afraid I don’t know who currently sells such a rug, though.

I love Madeline Weinrib and Dash & Albert rugs! I’ve been lucky enough to find some of Madeline’s on Craig’s List and from a couple of lucky sales. Surprisingly, they clean up very well. I’ve also picked up two of Madeline’s gorgeous pillows on ebay. One of them was only $30 and it’s a large square Suzani chocolate and pink Mandala which matches the same rug I bought elsewhere. I couldn’t believe my luck!

I have that beautiful blue and pink multiple stripe D&A in my hallway as a runner and it’s such a fun rug. I also have two of their indoor/outdoor washable rugs under my cats’ litter box and under their food bowls in the kitchen. I had no idea that they would look so good! You’d never know that you can take them outside and turn the hose on them either!

D&A makes a really great catalog. You do have to purchase it but it’s worth it. It has great photos of their rugs and the cutest pics of their dogs in some of the shots as well. It’s much easier to get an idea of how they’ll look in your home if you have the catalog and it’s a keeper too.

Love your blog and I check in often. :) Nancy
