I learned to sew in high school and never thought about it until my daughter turned 2. Wouldn’t it be cute to make her a costume. Borrowed my mother’s 25 year old Singer…. and the rest is history.

I wish there were more places like ‘The Make Place’. Women need community and I think places like these offer that.

We had one in Cambridge, MA. It seemed like for them to make a profit, the classes (and materials!) had to be super expensive, so it didn’t do so well (or at least that’s my theory!) and it’s now out of business. Had a private class taught there for part of my bachelorette party, which was totally cool; the other (public) classes I took were decidedly underwhelming and expensive! Sad… I wish it would take off!

Here in Minneapolis we have Crafty Planet, which is the best little craft shop. My friend had her bachlorette party there last year and emborider sqaures for her wedding quilt. They supplied the materials and we brought in treats. Hands down the best bachlorette party ever!

I have never been to a place like this, but it is so inspiring. I love the idea of building a local community around art and design. I do hope for more spaces like this. Acting locally is going to be fundamental as artists and designers find ways to make it in this new economy.

Thank you for introducing this cool spot.

For 2 years, I ran a similar kind of place in Singapore called Pauseability. Too bad that I could not keep up with the rent, and so had to close it. We still meet twice a month, once for making and trading Artist Trading Cards and the other for just some crafting.

It is truly a wonderful way to relax and also meet people – to pause and explore possibilities, as I would say it.

I just opened up a space like this at the Crocker Galleria in downtown San Francisco! We are always open for drop in crafting of all types (with a big focus on reusing and upcycling!) and we’ll be offering classes and fun events soon!
