Happy Weekend!

Well it’s about that time to throw on some cute shoes and something shimmery and paint the town red — it’s the weekend, baby! But first, how are you all doing? I’m loving my new life here, I feel so energized by the sheer newness of it all. I’m well aware that the honeymoon period will eventually come to its lusty end, but for now I’m gathering all the breadcrumbs and bits that I can as I explore my new surroundings spending hours perusing grocery store aisles and drug stores trying to translate everything because nothing is in English here (not even as a second language — when it is, it is in French!).

Happy Weekend~

A funny experience I had was in the local grocery store tonight, if you are American you’ll understand this… You know how in America we have a salad dressing called “Russian” dressing? It’s sort of flesh-toned peach and in my opinion, pretty gross. Well in Germany, they have this exact same dressing and you know it’s not called Russian dressing here. It’s called American dressing. Why? I have no clue. And after visiting about 100 stores, I finally found a can of peanut butter imported from America. It’s a small jar but good enough for me because I rarely eat it but it’s nice to know I at least can have it if I want too. Imagine walking into ONE American store without finding PB? Simply not possible!

The sheer experience of living as an expat in a foreign country is beyond my wildest dreams. I still sit here thinking, pinch me, did this all really just happen? If you’ve been following me for some time you know that I’ve wanted to live in Europe since I was pretty young and in my 20′s I set a goal for myself to eventually land here. Then I really started working towards this goal years back and now I AM HERE. I’m happy I settled on Germany, my husband and I entertained the option of other countries in the EU or other cities within Germany but this is the city where I feel the fit – and if the shoe fits my friends, you cannot wear anything else!

I hope that for any of you reading this blog entry right now, who have big dreams for yourself but feel like you  are pretty far from reaching them, or perhaps that they’re unattainable altogether please please please let me be your example that if you want something bad enough, and work towards it, you will ultimately find yourself either reaching the goal or even another one you hadn’t thought you had until you started walking towards the initial one.

Who was it that said “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”? Well it’s very, very true.

We often want it all, and we want it now (or yesterday). But the good stuff in life takes patience to cultivate but come harvest time, you will see that the wait was absolutely worth every ticking minute on the clock that you endured, sometimes painfully. And now I find myself setting new goals since reaching this one, my confidence is soaring more than before, and I feel like since I was able to do this then I can certainly reach the next goal that I’ve set for myself and so on. And I have many new goals that I’ll share with you in the months ahead.

There is no magic formula when it comes to happy living and reaching goals. I am saying this to encourage you because I get emails from a lot of amazing people who are frustrated, drained, even ready to give up because they feel like life isn’t giving them what they’d hoped for. I understand these feelings so well. I often looked upon people who I deemed a success and felt like they must have some help, a rich family, connections, money, something that made them different from me so that I could justify why I didn’t have what they did. Then I started to see that the one thing I needed was inside of me — I just needed to ignite the fire — the passion that I had for certain things and then set goals and go for them. When you have passion that is sincere, nothing can stop you and this is a confirmed fact whenever you find a successful person living an authentic, happy life. The key is to figure out your passion and set goals and with time and consistency, you can be those whom you envy. You can stop watching others live your dreams.

None of us are outsiders when it comes to living our life, there is no glass to look through — we are in fact living it right here, right now — this is not a dress rehearsal, this is real life as I once heard. And it’s true. There is no future time when you or I are officially allowed to live our life and be joyous and happy in doing so. And hey, I’m not stuck in some fantasy happy-joy land where life is always perfect. I get frustrated, annoyed, angry, depressed… just like you do. But the key is to stay positive, afloat, make progress, move forward and to not allow yourself to stay in a rut once you’ve taken a fall into one.

Why am I writing all this on a Friday? Pretty heavy stuff, huh? Hey, it’s the weekend, time to live it up and have some fun! But with all of my heart I wanted to say these things simply because you are my friends and this is what friends do, talk to one another openly and freely when certain chatty moments hit. I guess this was my chatty moment.

In closing, I want to say that I am so lucky to have you to share this experience of relocating with. I cannot imagine not being a blogger and doing all of this without the support and comfort (and advice!) of my friends online. I love you all so, so much and thank you for supporting decor8 and making this move possible for me because in a way, you have. I’m working freelance as a writer because of your support and this newfound career as a writer/blogger since 2006 has paved many fantastic roads for me and I greatly owe this to my husband and family and next, to all of you.

I’ll be back again next week, part-time as I still have a slew of favorite things guests that want their turn to share (big smile), but I’ll still be here writing from time-to-time and sharing as I am able. I’m still working on legal paperwork and banking stuff and a bunch of other appointments but it’s all starting to level out now as I’ve been getting so much accomplished working only 30 hours a week. Again, thank you for giving me the time that I need to settle in. Have you been enjoying my guests? I edit all posts and read all comments, and I’m gathering that you are indeed enjoying them based on your feedback but I thought I’d ask anyway. :) It’s so important to me that you are continually inspired and that your soul is fed with good positive energy while I’m out and about. You deserve those things.

See you on Monday, make this weekend a good one! x0 Holly

beautiful words. thanks for sharing Holly. btw, I had the same pb experience while I was living in Berlin! I remember thinking, “what?! Vielen Dank Holly for this tidbit of inspiration. I am in the midst of a huge project at the moment and really just want to stop, take a break, and just forget it all. everything you say is so damn true … life consists of ups and downs and that is good, because you can onlygrow by challenges.
we want to even just self-employed and in times of global economic crisis … but he what if you do not follow your heart … it’s so important to hear to your heart … there were many situations in my life, where I had to make things that I simply could not do it because something in me that ruffled … I just could not …
and that was good … because it gave me routes that I otherwise never would have …
you are right we should pursue our goals with all our passion … because only one may come and then what will you have it in every instance tries …… here in germany we say ( even perhaps in america, too): when a door somewhere close, then go to another … this is the life …
you are talking to me from the heart, holly … it’s unbelievable, what a passion is to feel in your words … there’s a lot of heart and touched many … love and thanks and we wish you a magical weekend in the circles of your loves

Well said, Holly! What a wonderful post! I was just writing about living our dreams yesterday on my blog. It’s so easy to get caught up in what we haven’t achieved that we forget to notice all that we have. I really have to tell you that you have been a huge inspiration to my husband and me. I’ve been following your blog for years and watching all the beautiful finds that you show us day after day, week after week. I never imagined that I could open my own shop and wasn’t even sure what I would put in it! Somewhere along our journey here in Morocco our creativity came alive in a whole new way and we find ourselves living out our dreams in ways that we never thought possible! We are one of those that started on our journey thinking we were heading one direction only to have life turned upside down… it keeps things interesting, don’t you think?
Enjoy the honeymoon… it can actually last a very long time! Oh, and I have a recipe for homemade peanut butter that I have been meaning to post. I will let you know when I do! It is so simple it’s ridiculous!
    Hugs from Morocco!

    Hi Holly
I often want to leave comments on your blog, but haven’t until now. I discovered your blog when I moved from New Jersey to South Korea, and couldn’t get my ‘fix’ of English design magazines. Your blog makes me appreciate the little things around me even if I don’t enjoy the big picture I am living right now. Moving originally from New Zealand to New Jersey was a bit of culture shock, and moving here was even more so. In a few weeks I am going back New Zealand again for the first time in 5 years, and then in April next year we move to Wuppertal, Germany. I was hugely apprehensive about going, but having read your experiences and felt your excitement, I am now so geared up to go, explore, experience and love it. Thank you so so so very much. You are indeed an inspiration and so much fun to visit every day.

So nice to hear that you have been following your dreams and loving your new place. :o)

I love this post because it is as inspiring as ever. I just have a few questions in mind. What if you are not sure of your passion? Or simply put, you have too many passions in life that you have and you do not know which one to follow or focus. I am in a crossroad where there are too many choices and each one seemed to be the one for me. how am i able to single them out and follow? or should i just follow all of them, one step at a time? what if in my country’s context, setting up your business meant that u have to sacrifice a lot of things? Sleep, money, relationships and many others? In my country, it is not really possible to set up something you want because everyone has to consider the expensive rentals of shops. My country is not conducive. But the same can be said for other countries. I really don’t know what to do anymore.

Sorry for having too many questions here. a bit longwinded.
    Thanks for hearing me out.

I couldn’t help but smile as I read your comment about searching for peanut butter! I’m an American and have lived in Europe for 10 years now – 5 in Paris, 4 in Amsterdam and currently reside in Berlin and I love the European life and could identify with many of the things you said today. The thing that amazes me is 10 years into expat life, Americans upon 1st meeting me will often ask my nationality, which cracks me up, but though my appearance has been europeanized, my speech patterns changed by living a life speaking a foreign language poorly or my native language slowly so foreigners can understand me, the girl underneath the facade is still the same! I still, 10 years later, get cravings for PBJ! Which, by the way, Holland sells EXCELLENT Peanut Butter – with the brand Calve! And I still fill half a suitcase when I’m in America of things I can’t get in Europe (or refuse to pay export prices for in Europe!). You’re on a wonderful journey Decor8! Peace, blessings and prosperity in your new world! I can’t wait to read how this changes you and what you find will always stay the same! Now go eat a PBJ, and I might do the same!

I remember when I wanted to cook for my hostfamily that it was impossible to find good chocolate (10 years ago), fresh vegetables in the winter, decent bread, and so on.
And when I came back to Belgium, I was totally Americanized and than it was impossible to find American ingredients. Everytime I see a box of Oreo cookies now, I feel like a little kid that just received some candy!

I was fortunate to live in England for a while and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, lack of peanut butter and all. I’ve added your link icon to my new blog (closed at the moment ’cause I’m simply too busy to care for it). ?

Wonderful reading about your experiences as you discover your new city. As a foreign student in the US, I had many such moments. Although, here in Dubai, the world seems a very small place.

Thank you for being an inspiration. I know I’ve felt stuck and I learn from people who have followed their dream. I lost my job in a museum that I worked for for over 11 years. I’m still doing some freelance work there but you know what? I wasn’t upset when I left because there are so many things I want to do and I’m trying not to get discouraged even though I haven’t found the key to success with my art work on etsy and haven’t had enough time to concentrate on career sideline “B” but I’m trying and I’m feeling more creative and that’s what is important. Now I’m trying to encourage my husband to do the same because he’s been fantastic with me through all of this and now I think it is his turn to get out of a rut. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Thanks for sharing Holly! Your truly are an inspiration! I agree with you completely. Sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith and hope all of the pieces fall into place. I too made a big move 3 years ago… not to another country (that’s on the list though and your story has inspired me even more to not give up on it) but I made the move cross country from a small town in Northern California to NYC and I haven’t looked back since. 3 years later and the honeymoon period has not ended. Here’s to your honeymoon never ending! And congratulations on reaching on our your dreams =) Thank you for all your daily inspiration!!!

I enjoyed reading this post of yours too. God to hear you’re settling in. You’ve given me some food for thought regarding my own plans to move to India. That’ll be a culture shock and a half.

Hey lady!! Congratulations and how exciting that you moved to Germany!! I moved to Vienna Austria from California almost 2 years ago (German is my first language thanks to my parents) and I’ve gotten settled but I know what the transition is like. I really recommend finding an expat network in the city that you live. Here are the ones I know about: http://www.internations.com and http://www.eurocircle.com. There are sooo many people living outside their native country and they are all truly amazing and inspirational (and an excellent support network). Good luck!! I love your work!

    Hello Holly,

I usually comment on your other blog, but I felt the need to comment your last post here. First of all, thank you for the guest bloggers, I really enjoyed reading them! I didn’t know a lot of them, so that was really nice to get to know more bloggers and blogs :)
Thank you also for your words and inspiration. I am from France and my dream was to move to Germany at one time or another of my life. After finishing my studies, I spent 3 years in Brussels, then I finally accomplished my dream and moved to Hanover 6 years ago. I still enjoy the honeymoon after all this time, despite some discouraging moments when I didn’t know if I would be able to find a job or adapt to my new life (although i speak German fluently). I have to say the most annoying part was paperwork! I was glad my now husband helped me through this all, he was my only support at that time. If you need any help with paperwork, translations (also from French ;) ) or anything, I would be glad to help you!
If you are looking for foreign food, the Edeka supermarket in the basement floor of Kaufhof (at the main train station) has a large choice. This is where I usually find some typical French food when I’m in need of it ;)

PS: I don’t know Belmandel, will have to check that!

(Sorry, I accidentally hit the return key before I was finished)

I’ve been blogging about life abroad for the last year, and I’m excited to see how the coming year inspires and changes your worldview! Just to let you know, peanut butter isn’t a big deal anywhere but North America. But in Europe they have those giant jars of Nutella, which is heaven enough. I wish I could import those to Japan. Neither peanut butter nor Nutella is a food staple on this side of the globe!

Best wishes on your new expat life! I raise a glass of sake in your honor.

Noli – You can find Belmandel in Rewe over in the List (on Rühmkorffstraße, Lister Platz stop on the u-bahn). It’s in the aisle nearest to the bread bins. Look on the lower shelves where you find Nutella. They have Peanut Butter too. Spread PB on toast and a layer of Belmadel and I tell you, it’s amazing. You can top that with a layer of banana slices. Heavenly!

How right you are Holly. My birth family was awful and my experience of childhood was not good. I knew that I wanted something different and set out to create that.

I had no idea how to do it, but forty years ago it really depended on the right husband. When I found a man that fitted the requirements I fell for him and we were married. Now, all those years down the line I have two well educated, well adjusted children. I live a life I only dreamed about – not a wealthy life, but comfortable. I have choice over where I live and what I do in my retirement. I got myself an education as an adult and became a graduate. Was it easy? No. Was it worth the effort? Yes.

You know what, when my mother became old and needed help it was me she came to and I gave her what I needed. Maybe when she was young she was overloaded and couldn’t cope. She was never able to see that the way out was in her own hands. To learn this is the best lesson in life anyone can have.

    Thank you.

  82. 82 Isabelle commented:

Sorry folks, on re-reading I realised I said I gave my mother what ‘I’ needed – I meant to say what ‘she’ needed, but on reflection perhaps the ‘I’ was right!

Hi Holly, I’ve been popping in to read your blog from time to time but don’t think I’ve ever left a comment. I’m a South African living in England. Was only going to stay for 2 years but went travelling through America where I met my husband (half Irish). So, the 2 years became nearly 10 years and I love it here. Now my dream is to become a textile designer and I work hard at that and ensure that I remain focussed. I have found that my blog has helped to keep me accountable to myself (and others) and it helps me to map out my journey. I love reading about other people finding their passions and following their dreams, it really inspires me so, thank you for this post and best wishes. I find that if I want some goodies from home, you can usually order it over the internet. Best wishes for your new journey!

Ah! Someone who understands my world. I just happened upon your website through a design blogging friend here in Austria. My husband and I moved to Graz, Austria at the end of February (3 weeks after getting married!) and we are loving it. Yes, many adjustments…especially the grocery store. The dressing selection is one of the saddest parts. I have found that most stores (in Austria at least) have the little jars of PB. Looking forward to following your blog and new life in Germany! What city? I started a blog when we first moved and it’s been a great tool to keep in touch and stay creative. I start intensive German lessons soon, so hopefully I can find some work after that…although I would love to be able to do interior design one day…or at least blog about it like you! Keep up the good work!

    Hi Holly

You and your blog are simply amazing. You are so inspirational and I can see by how you write that you must help and encourage so many people leading so many different lives. Its great that you are so passionate because I don’t think this blog could be as fantastic as it is without that passion. I am loving reading your blog nearly everyday. I’m loving hearing about how you have joined us in Europe. I live in London which I love and have travelled around Europe, but also visited America many many times so I find the PB comment funny. And I agree that Russian dressing is rather nasty.

All of your guest writers have been fantastic. I’m really enjoying your work and theirs.

Thanks Holly, thank you for bringing a smile each day.

Thank you so much for this post! It is very inspiring and I think I need to rehash my goals in life to move forward.

I’ve also had a very American experience while living in the UK a few years back. I really wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I looked everywhere in the Tesco Metro in Manchester and couldn’t find peanut butter. I was telling my English friend about it and he suggested I look for peanut butter on the second floor of the store. I didn’t realize there was a second floor and that is where I eventually found the peanut butter.
