The season is starting to change from Summer to Autumn and Oktoberfest will kick off next week. This is my favorite time of the year, the time for new beginnings, leather jackets and layering clothes, pretty bags and boots, and patterned tights. It’s also a great time to layer the home, decorate, and enjoy candles and warm meals with your family.
The leaves are starting to change (we have the same beautiful Fall as in New England, thankfully, so I’m not missing out), acorns and chestnuts are all over the walkways and streets, the red squirrels are busy collecting (here’s what squirrels look like here), the air is changing to crisp and slightly cool, and at night I can smell the stoves burning — that lovely smell of wood combined with the smell or plants and earth from the nearby largest urban forest in Europe just two blocks away (side note: it has a ancient nine-ring turf labyrinth that my husband played in as a child, it has existed since 1642, isn’t that cool?).
So, on with the point of presenting Terrain! I was so happy to learn that Terrain at Styer’s in Pennsylvania, a garden shop, greenhouse and cafe, now has an online store. Has anyone been to their PA location? It really reminds me of some of the garden centers that I see over here… I love the organic feel and how cozy everything is — plus their attention to detail and their design eye is absolute perfection. It’s great that their shop is now online for those who don’t live anywhere near Pennsylvania but who would enjoy some of their product offerings. Here are some views of their store in case you’d like to travel there today… And below, are some views of products that I love – my wish list. :) Please click images to enlarge.
a. Open weave teak sofa (for the patio), b. rust wire edging for the garden, c. romantic mood lighting for the patio, d. a unique metal & rope pendant, e. Hadley Hutton prints (just because), f. Tretorn boots for planting, g. ruled vase (love!) and h. nesting bowls (double love!).
1. natural nail brush (we have these everywhere here, Germans are big on natural brushes of all shapes and sizes!), 2 + 3. yummy candles from: Le Conte in pear or fresh mown grass from Mark and Sally Bailey, 4. carrot hand cream, 5. alaska mud mask and brush (after a long day in the garden), 6. homemade pie fillings, 7. glass and rope terrarium (wow, imagine several grouped on a buffet?), 8. bird trivet, 9. culinary lavender (great for breads and chocolates!), 10. and a jute log basket because it’s important to keep that firing burning and 11. a good book: natural garden style to relax with.
What are some of your favorites from Terrain? What does Fall look like in your part of the world? Isn’t it Spring in South Africa and warming up in Australia too?

Wow. This is the perfect fall wish list, Holly. Great finds! It’s such a special time of year. I plant heathers on my balcony, make apple jam and take a morning walk in the crisp air. Oh, and the darkening nights are perfect for candle light. Happy days!

Holly, love your blog! I live 10 minutes from Terrain at Styer’s and believe it or not, I’m having a hard time jumping into autumn as it is SO humid here. I was thinking of turning the air back on! Soon though, I’ll be getting out my pumpkin spice candles and scattering mums, pumpkins and ghourds about. I just love the document wrapped soap and patisserie mould- I would love to see some lavender, basil and dill seeding in there for next spring!

I’m with you on the ruled vase and the nesting bowls Holly. Gorgeous.
It is supposedly spring here in Australia, but it seems we skipped it this year and went straight from winter to summer… it’s been HOT. You might also have seen photos of the totally bizarre red dust storm that blanketed Sydney and a lot of the east coast this week? Weird weather…

Fall is the season I miss most since I’ve moved to New Orleans. No leaf-changing, no crisp, cool breezes. But at least the weather is beautiful through the fall months… just not very fall-ish.

Oooh, this shop looks lovely. I am in PA often, so I’ll have to check this out.
Also, I would love to see photos of the nearby forest! It sounds amazing.

Yes yes! I have been to Terrain. I moved to Philadelphia in May and kept an eye on the opening before I moved as I love Anthropologie and found out this was another store by the parent company. I felt like I was going to Disneyland the first day I was able to go. It IS so cozy (as you said you felt like it looked) and their merchandising displays are so beautiful. Live plants mixed with old & antique furnishings and materials; simple home decor items you never knew you HAD to have. Great hard to find beauty products as well. It’s HUGE (a couple of acres) and they have a great little cafe on site as well, so you can definitely spend an afternoon. They also host classes- I went to one recently all about Lavender. Coincidentally one of the purchases I’ve made from Terrain is the exact homemade apple pie filling you featured and it was delish! I was so excited to see this feature today. Thanks!

I hate to make everyone jealous, but the Terrain shop is 20 minutes from my home. It is actually more of a compound than a shop – with meandering trails and beautiful, woodsy “shacks”. And the cafe! Don’t get me started on their yummy menu. The Anthropologie store across the street doesn’t hurt, either.

I’m from Pennsylvania and was introduced to Terrain by a close friend of mine. Absolutely amazing and serene space. I own a small graphic/web design company and have since made my way to the garden/home store and cafe to gain inspiration. The atmosphere is refreshing, the designs are modern and clean and the cafe is inviting, delicious and calming. I would absolutely recommend taking a trip to Terrain.

This is my new happy place, I’m not even kidding. It’s one of the reasons why I was so excited to move to Philadelphia!
I love making an event of being there – the cafe serves local, organic fare and you eat in a greenhouse or outside. it’s simple, beautiful. There are acres of gardens but the inside has the most amazing home items – lots of them local or from fantastic etsy sellers.
I just bought a large terrarium from there and am going to a wine/bonfire event tonight. Love. It.
The Lavendar Sugar is amazing but one of my favourites are these hand made lamps from Egypt out of metal. I think you can find them on the site but they’re beautiful and knowing that each little light dot was pierced by someone, even cooler.
Styers was started in the late 1800’s (the original house is still there) by a man who sold his flowers on the road side and then ended up doing flowers for prominent familes in Philadelphia (his flowers and trees even made it to the white house). Anthropologie took it over just over a year ago so you can really see that influence but it is really a beautiful, natural, edited space that has that same corner-turning-discovery feel.
And it’s dog friendly to boot. Yes, I’m far too smitten but it’s a really nice experience and I’m so glad they’re onine!

Hi Holly,
I ‘m from Singapore and I love reading your blog for inspiration. I personally love a blend of both East and West cultures which is more prevalent in my part of the world. Wish we had four seasons in Singapore but it is sunny all year round, well most of the time. Seasons bring about changes that evoke different moods and emotions :)

Alex — It’s dog friendly? Love it! Here in Germany you can take dogs almost anywhere, into stores and restaurants and cafes… It’s really great! I don’t even have a dog but I love seeing them all over the city wagging their little tails looking up at me with big eyes. :) And of course, lots of small shops have doggie treats, a water dish near the register, it’s the cutest thing. The other day I was dining out and a waiter brought a dog bowl over to the pup under the table near to us so he could have something to drink. :)

It seems we have skipped Spring here in Aus and gone straight to summer which is quite scary considernig what last summer brought, not really looking forward to more week-long heat waves of 40+ degrees. Spring is still making a small impression though, the flowers are all out in my garden and no more frosts and foggy mornings on our farm! The summers may be sweltering here in Murrindindi but the winters are a bit chilly too!

Nichole – You just have to come visit me. :) No, seriously — I have tons in my Flickr photostream. The forest was a gift to the people of Hannover, given to them by the King of England who once had a castle and gardens here, he was a duo king over England and the Kingdom of Hannover (Germany). So anyway, this forest is “natural” not man made, and massive. Part of it has a zoo, another part has a wild life park where deer/bucks run free, and another part has a bird sanctuary. Then there are beer gardens that are here and there around the edges, and the forest borders several districts here, including the List, where we live. Inside the forest there are many playgrounds, streams, a few open spots for relaxing on a blanket in the summer, a few kindergartens, a mini golf, ponds, a few outdoor cafes, a small petting zoo, a few bathrooms, and both natural dirt trails along with a few paved bike paths. You can also find boars (but they won’t bother you, and they are hard to find), deer, hedgehogs, red squirrels, ducks, birds, and birdhouses on hundreds of trees. There are so many species of trees I lost count. Snails and slugs abound. And there is this turf labyrith dating back to 1642, it’s intact and beautiful. Sculptures mark the entrances to the forest in many places (not all) and you can find a few sculptures inside as well in very random places. Every park bench has a small trash can next to it. You won’t find trash on the ground, it’s spotless. And it’s safe, you can go in anytime of the day or even the night. And no “activity” if you know what I mean, we don’t have that to deal with here (drugs, sex) in the forest. Lots of joggers, people on bikes, walkers, walkers with these poles that remind me of cross country skiing, dogs, kids, kids in wagons, it’s a place for all. One path is paved and runs through the center and it’s illuminated at night since here there is a big biking culture and that path is the shortcut from one district to the other. I’ve never in my life been to a forest in the middle of a city like this… it’s very, very green and air is fresh and lovely. It’s around 1,600 acres total. I step off of the train and walk a block to the right and I’m suddenly immersed in a forest, it’s like going from Boston to the most secluded path in the White Mountains within 3 minutes.
Here’s a good aerial view of it: http://www.iso4.de/temp/555__500×333__Eilenriede%201.jpg

I’m a lucky duck as I too live about 10 minutes away from Terrain. They have the most amazing selection of succulents (hard to find around here) aside from all the other goodness. They also have a great coffee shop and serve yummy lunch and dinner. I’d be glad to meet anyone there who comes for a visit!
