Pottery Barn Lust

Yeah, there I’ve said it. I lust after some things at Pottery Barn. Not all but definitely some. Like you, I pick and choose from a variety of stores. But I’m loving lots of stuff in the PB organizing + office category because I have this office obsession lately — it’s all I think about. I guess it has to do with the feeling of want. You know, when you’re single you want the partner. When you’re a secretary you want the promotion. When you are a blogger you want the readers. And when you are working from your dining room table (me) you want the office space. So this is my desire-of-the-moment. An office space to call my own. What is currently hot on your want list?

Pottery Barn Storage

I dream of nooks and corners and windows to hang things in and a wall for my inspiration board. But I refuse to be one of those who are miserable while they wait. Instead, I’m collecting my inspirations so that once I do have an office, I will know exactly what to order to furnish it and make it my own. And then when it is finished, I will show you how it looks. When it comes to decorating ideas, my brain is on overload –  I cannot decide upon the color scheme, though I know at least 3 of the walls will be white and I’m thinking the 4th will be wallpaper or painted in a favorite solid color. I still love that accent wall trend out there and though it may die tomorrow, I’m thinking I can still rock it if I use a paper that I’m in love with.I know what I do want… plenty of storage and a bright space.

Pottery Barn Storage

(I know this is a bedroom, but I’d love to have a storage bench in my office like this one.)

Are you currently thinking of a certain room in the home that you’d like to redecorate? Or are you, like me, looking for a new flat to live in and dreaming of all of the features you home it will have? If so, what are some features you are looking for?

I have a list that is a bit embarrassing to share with any property agent as I’m sure they’d roll their eyes and kick me out of their office. So I keep most of my “wants” in my head. But one want that I do share off the cuff is hardwood floors and enough rooms for an office and guest bedroom. I’ve never had space for a guest bedroom and want one so badly… and of course it will be a nursery if and when I decide to have children but until then it will be a guest room and I certainly will use it for guests as there is a list of people back home whom I’d love to have over for a visit. I don’t want to live large or anything, but I do want to stay where I move next so I’m thinking ahead a bit. I really, really have come to hate moving so the next time I move I want to stay in my apartment for 100 years. :)

I’m off to IKEA… I need a new mattress and no doubt I’ll come home WITHOUT a mattress but a bag of things that I did not intend to buy. :) See you later on today!

Mmmm organization – that is always the sweet spot for me. I’d love to have an inspiration board to manage all my ideas & curiosities. Currently, I’ve been all about the kitchen, thanks to dropping temperatures & my desire to make soup and bake almost every day.

I’m looking for a place to live… but whether or not I move is entirely dependent on my acceptance to SCAD’s MFA Interior Design program! I’m looking for a place that isn’t on ground level and offers plenty of light. Maybe even a small view of Atlanta? I want the freedom to paint my walls and a washer + dryer already in the place would be great! If nothing else… at least the connections for future appliances. And I’d love wood floors.

Now if I could get all of that wrapped up with a pretty bow and below my budget that’d be a miracle! :-)

I really need to redo my craft studio for efficiency, but still share it with my husband’s exercise bike. I don’t really have anywhere to put him, so I need to figure out how to reorganize the space. I should just get an organization/efficiency expert to look at the space, b/c this feels beyond my reach.

I am currently trying to finish decorating my nursery. Baby is due next week and the gender is a surprise. I have lots of wall art bookmarked on my computer…just waiting to find out what baby is to purchase. The nursery was supposed to be the office…so for a long time I was looking at and coveting many of the same storage solutions you are now. Good luck finding your perfect place!

That wrapping paper organizer is great. I don’t do enough wrapping to justify the space it would take in my office, but it would be so handy! My office has a lot of shelves, but unfortunately they’re built in (which is usually a good thing), but they’re not very deep so it’s a little tough to figure out what to do w/ them…which is why I haven’t!

Ahhhh yes, good ‘ole Ikea, drawing us in with the intention of buying one single chair but instead purchasing 3 frames, some wrapping paper, Swedish meatballs and a plant. Ugh.

This post couldn’t come at a better time as just this morning I posted about my OWN wish to reinvent my work space! I need more color in my life (and let’s be honest, storage) and I think both the wall cubby and storage bench would fit the bill. And maybe the wrapping paper unit for my, ahem, random Ikea purchases.

I hope you find everything you are looking for in your new place. It’s tough to find the perfect space, but Germany seems to have been kind to you so far…maybe she will continue to be :)

I have a studio in my new house (ok, I’ve been here a year, but it still feels new to me) and since we focused on furnishing the other rooms, it is sort of cobbled together. However, there is one thing that I never would have thought to put in there that works amazingly…an Ikea wardrobe. The pants hanger is perfect for fabric (or sheets of beautiful wrapping paper) and the huge pull-out drawers are organizational heaven for me. I’ve got beads in a shallow one, and painting supplies in a deeper one. If the drawers are too large, you can divide them up with baskets or custom wooden inserts. It goes nearly to the ceiling, so it uses every inch of available space.

Right now I am in the very beginning stages of setting up a place in my home to meet with my clients. I had been dreaming of renting a space somewhere, but in the end decided I have better places to spend my money than on high rent. :)
So now I’m turning my living room into a meeting area… moving the “living room” downstairs and repurposing some furniture to make my new space pretty. I’ve been growing weary of lugging all of my products to coffee shops and always triple checking to make sure I’m at the right place if clients don’t show up on time… then straining my eyes in that dim lighting on teeny tables.
Furniture is going to start moving tonight… so I’m excited! :)

“This is what I want for the loft!”
Then began dreaming of having all of those adorable little spaces to store all of my THINGS…all the things that make my heart sink when I look at them…ribbon…buttons…markers…pens…paper!
Then began to wonder…”How much will it cost for mine to look JUST like the one on the catalog page?!”

i love these office spaces. I’m redoing my office (well, its been a few months now, but its getting close!). I really like the white in these pictures. Mine in lavendar, black and white. I have a desk that I have to keep because I have no where else to put it, I’m painting a bookcase and I’m going to put up an inspiration wall. I think I’m going to get that piece with the rolls of ribbon hanging from, that’s a creat idea. I share this space with my indoor bunnies (no cages, they are like little dogs). So I have to have room for their accessories also.

where to begin – so many things to say.

first, i am so with you on WANTS. i don’t know about you, but i totally find that sometimes i am more “wantful” than others and i have to reel it in while other times i feel pretty content.

as far as the accent wall – i am also considering a wallpaper accent wall. i don’t like paint accent walls because i feel like it’s such a sharp contrast when the two colors meet at the corner and is just hard in a way i don’t like, but i have been thinking that wallpaper wouldn’t strike me that way.

i know how you feel about moving – we’ve just been through a move and even with everything going smoothly it is still such an upheaval! to get settled and organized, i have been lost in the container store website dreaming of closets!

    Miss Holly,

Love these. I was using my dining table area for a little office myself for longer than I would like to say. All while turning a canning facility on our country property into a little office for me. I am so in love with my own space to sip coffee in and do computer things. I never knew it could be so much fun. I put a little sitting area in my office and a packaging station, and I am in office whirls of bliss. I think I will work on more organizing yet keeping it simple tactics for the future, as my space evolves. I love an organized space and that first shot is wonderful too.

First of all, I love the organized workspace pictures! I’m envious! I’ve definately transformed my craft room but it’s still a mess (never got around to finding a home for everything after I put in the new workspace).

I’m going to redecorate my master bedroom. I’ve been looking for affordable bedding (a big task!) and something that can handle a 90 lb. dog! Right now I have a duvet cover that I wash every week. A comforter can’t be thrown in the washer that much so I guess I’ll find another duvet. I’ve purchased pillow forms and will make covers as soon as I figure out the bedding.

I’m going to repaint too. Looking at a cool gray color and hope to add a wide stripe of pale silvery, blue (almost translucent).

I’ve look at some art on Etsy and think it will work in the attached bathroom. It’s hard to find just the right thing to hang on the wall in the bedroom. Maybe I should make something “quilt-y”… Hmmm

Wish me luck! I’m indecisive so it will take awhile to transform the room…

It was scratch & dent and I paid a fraction of the original. I have enjoyed it, but, it is huge! At least for the bedroom I put it in. Didn’t look that big in the picture or when I got it home. Very versatile though. I can take it apart & move the bookshelves to different rooms. I’ve had my eye on a PB Greenwich sofa for my small home. Chelsea mentioned buying cheaper, but I believe, in the end, you get what you pay for, and I too am willing to wait until I can afford what I want. I’ve bought cheaper in the past only to end up not happy with it, wishing I had gotten what I wanted in the first place. I’m chooiser(?) now.

I try to remain patient in the waiting for my dream house by reminding myself that the planning and designing is awfully fun, and hopefully by the time I have that dream house I will have the plan just right!

My husband and I are hoping to build a house out at the family farm, and I would be happy with a corner bedroom of the basement for a sewing room… but if we’re really dreaming, then I have a gorgeous art studio in a loft above the garage! It has big dormer windows that let in light from the North and South. It is awash in white, and I also toy with the idea of a feature wall – maybe in a vibrant apple green or a deep rusty orange… something that my husband would hate having in the house! :) I’d have a drawing desk for drawing and painting, sitting in a window. It would have an inspiration board, and drawers full of paper, canvases, paints, and coloured pencils. In another area I’d have a large sewing table with a big armoire to hold my buckets of fabric , an ironing board, and shelves for ribbons, buttons, and all those goodies . On the far end there is a pottery wheel and a small kiln room, and counter space with a big industrial sink… But that’s if I’m really dreaming!

I too work from a home office and have got a serious “office bug” at the moment, as I work from a tiny kitchen table in my little LA apartment. As a full time freelancer that works in graphic arts and crafting, I am so sick of switching out computers for sewing machines everyday.
It’s a tough balance to decide when is the right time to make the big move huh? I’m so glad I’m not alone in the matter. Love these images– thanks for sharing, and inspiring, as usual!

i love your blog, and your thoughts. i totally know what you mean about the wants. first i want this, and then once you get it, you’re (or at least i’m) on to the next thing. and so yes, for whatever crazy reason i care about people reading my blog (a friend called it being reader greedy), and then of course there’s the obsession over the home office space. we live in brooklyn and for a family of 4 our apartment’s a little cozy. we’re making the kids share a room so my husband and i can share an office, and boy are there rules! so that we can coexist. he loves to pile, in public, and i love organization, cubbies, things. so someday, when i dream, we will have a home with an office for me and one for him and then i can organize away in my own neat freak space! l.

I worked at Pottery Barn while i was in high school, so I’m not at all interested in buying anything from the store. It may look good because of the way they have everything placed in the catalogs/stores, but the quality isn’t there — it’s all marketing.

hey i hear ya! just having remodeled (so to speak) the office/studio myself with those pottery barn catalogs as inspiration..who knew it would come to that. I actually made that work station using 4 (for mine and my assistant’s) ikea expedit (the 4 cubby hole version) and a plank of polyurethaned plywood from the depot and it looks pretty good! Very versatile!

Right now I’m dreaming of a flat which would have more than one room in it so that I don’t need to look at the piles and piles and piles and piles of books out of my bed. I’d have a walk-in closet and I’ declutter my basement and and and… Oh, the dreams!
And, of course, those mushroom posters would be the first to move in!
I’m also dreaming of a much softer color scheme for my next place, pretty tired of living with walls that are a bit too bright for my nerves :)

The Pottery Barn “Bedford” set is pretty (and on sale, too, apparently). But I agree with The Office Stylist above, there are cheaper alternatives out there. Most of the furniture in my studio is from Target; since that photo was taken, I’ve moved my “Embellishment Center” (IMHO a better alternative for sewing supplies than the Pottery Barn “Wall-Mounted Craft Organizer” for about a quarter of the price) to the wall above my sewing machine.Another storage area uses a set of stacking Closetmaid units. Hoping to save up enough to get a desk for my computer area one of these days — right now, I use a hand-me-down kitchen table, which is okay for a surface, not so great for organizing papers and stuff.

Karen thank you for that GREAT link to the Embellishment Center on Amazon — the price is great for that and I’m sure lots of readers looking to organize their home office will really like it. :)

    Hi Holly
I just love reading your blog, It is so inspiring. I recently started working from home (i design stationery) but I am struggling to get everything in order, to focus and get centered in my work. (I live in South Africa.)
Sometimes I feel as if I wont be able to do this….a bit scary for me. I need structure more than I thought. I loved that post that you did a while back, where you said…”be a small giant” and “dont force any creative process”. I think that is so true, I am certainly going to apply it in my life.

    Anyway…keep up the stunning posts.
