There is so much inspiration packed in the pages of Elle Interiör Sweden but if you’re not lucky enough to have access to their issues the website is the next best thing. I find so many great links, ideas and trend reports there and I don’t even read Swedish… but it’s so visual and easy enough to navigate that you really don’t need to. Here are a few recent photographs in Elle Interiör, I like the colors in these photos and the gorgeous au natural wood trend that they are spotlighting…
When I think about it, how many decorating magazines do I really read anyway, even when they are in English? Sad to admit but it’s true, I skip most of the articles or trend reports but I do scan them and if the home or product is of someone I know then I’ll read it… otherwise not. Is it bad for a writer to admit this publicly? Should I feel ashamed of this? Well whether it is or not, there I’ve said it and it cannot be taken back: I only read text in design magazines by either a writer whom I know to be engaging, informative, conversational and/or witty (a few columns from Domino come to mind), or I just skim and drool at the photos and read the bylines and photo captions. I guess everyone is different though. But I will say this, there are exceptions — when Selvedge arrives, I gobble it down word-by-word. I read each article twice. It’s so well written and poetic in some ways, it’s a word fest and extremely informative…

Wow….I mean, wow…that table and stool have captured my heart and no, I don’t think it is bad to admit….everyone has their own style, I feel the same, I don’t read it all…I skip through. I would love to get my hands on Selvedge..it is beautiful!

I flip, I pour over pictures, then I read. I am not a designer, so I need to hear the “when you are reorganizing your room- try pulling the furniture away from the wall” and other super basic stuff. Then of course I hoarde the magazines…

You’re not alone! There are some I read and some I just flip through. It varies not only based on what magazine it is, but how much time I have and what I’m in the mood for. In my ideal world I would be sitting by the pool reading them all word for word though with no other worries :)

I have a tendency to flip through and look at the images first, but then go back and read the articles properly.
Often you want to know more about why someone’s chosen to decorate their house in a certain way, or why they were transforming it, and you don’t get that kind of information just from looking at pictures.

I’m glad you admitted to just looking at design mag’s and not always reading the articles…it’s nice to know I’m not the only one! I can look at my collection of magazines over and over and not tire of them, always seeing something new or seeing with fresh eyes. And I completely agree with you about Selvedge, love it! It’s worth every penny.

Don’t feel bad! I too read the magazines for the pretty pictures. My main reason is that the articles are always depressing – meaning, they talk about super-expensive stuff in faraway shops that I will never be able to get. So it kills the mood to see a really pretty picture and then read, “Available in that quaint little shop off the main road in [insert obscure New England town] for just 1500 Dollars.” Yeah. I’ll stick with the pictures, thanks. ;-)

Stina – ha ha ha ha GREAT point. Yes, I have to agree with you there… :)

So true and such honesty! At times I think we can be so inundated with images we tend to just gloss over them & the articles. As Stina says, some pieces are outrageous in price or state (call for info)! Writing a blog about affordable finds this can frustrate me but also encourages me to get out there and find options we can all afford. I miss Domino terribly…their articles were well written in a very approachable way. They were also on the short and to the point! I love pretty pictures but I also want them to be my reality not just my daydream : )
