After Tara’s guest post highlighting her adventures to Iceland, I’ve been thinking about taking a trip up north for a weekend visit to Reykjavik. I recently heard from Eirikur Adalsteinsson over at the online shop Icelandic Market which sells only wares created by designers from Iceland and enjoyed seeing the clean, modern style with the obvious love of nature in each product. Have you visited this shop before? Possibly not as it seems to be new to the blogging circuit.
If you’re keen on unique design with a nod to nature, you’ll love their home + fashion. I’m wishing I could get my husband to wear this Thufa hat in grey. I saw one on a man here the other day, he looked really, really cute in it and I imagined how my guy would wear it so well too. When I asked him he gave me the look. Does your sig other have a look, too? This look was of the not-in-your-dreams variety. The one where I know that all the convincing in the world will not change his mind. It’s the look I like the least! Maybe I can buy it and beg, though I may just end up with less money and the hat hanging on a little hook, permanently, in my hallway. Sigh. Or perhaps I can wear it. The designers are Farmers Market from Iceland and they show a lady wearing one here on their website so perhaps I can rock it if my husband ends up not wearing it. Hmmm.
On the other hand, this shawl is gorgeous. Wow. That would not hang on a little hook in my hallway, it would be draped around my neck and I may never take it off until Spring at least. It’s very folksy looking, I love that.

I found one of those hats last year at a thrift store. The man I “made” wear it…Loved it and wore it all last winter. He went to find it this year and sadly the button and some scraps of woolen weave were all that was left. He had left in the garage and the dog ate it! Heh. Luckily the dog’s stomach didn’t notice the difference but now “He” no longer has the hat and several searches have produced nothing so fine…

Hi Holly,
I use to live in Iceland and a couple of years in Reykjavik. you definitely have to go there! you’re going to love it. there are few shops on Laugavegur, which is the main street downtown, which sell stuff made by icelandic designers. you should also go to at the very beginning of Vesturgata, where there are a couple of unusual shops (one is held by 8 different designers showing their stuff…mainly fashion and accessorize, but also tea things…unfortunately I don’t remember the name of the shop) and also Frida a vintage shop. Also very popular outside Iceland are 66North and Elm (also on Laugavegur).
you probably have already heard of the blue lagoon, but if you want to do something VERY special, go to Hveragerdi, a village just 40km south of the capital, and ask the locals how to reach the point where the hot and cold river meet. it is in an unspoiled location up in the mountains and it takes 2 hour-walk to reach. the warm river lays in a valley and you can even camp there. it is so magical in winter (to avoid in summer)…just check the weather before going there.

Let’s hope beautiful pieces like these keep Iceland’s economy warm! I’m going to purchase the Thufa hat this moment. I’ve always wanted one for cold NYC winters and this put me in the mood to go ahead with it!

My Icelandic colleague has a similar hat and it’s very cute on her (and very warm too). Hers is from another Icelandic company, 66ºNorth. http://www.66north.com/shop/pc-449-420-kaldi-arctic-hat.aspx

Hi,
if you go to visit Iceland you must stay at apartment k. I am an enthusiastic reader of emmas design blog (and yours of course) In February 2009 she showed pictures of apartment k in Reykjavik. She was there with her boyfriend. I visited Iceland in June last year and spend a few nights at apartment k. There is really everything you need and kathy and her very friendly team makes you fell at home there. They even pick you up at the airport. And after your flight you first have to take a relaxing bath at the blue lagoon. We had some fantastic days in iceland and we will come back again. See more http://www.apartmentk.is

Went to Iceland a little over a year ago, and LOVED it. I want to go back so badly, if anything to take another stroll down Laugavegur!

I went to Iceland last August and absolutely loved it. I keep thinking back to my trip! It’s definitely worth going for more than a weekend – hire a car and go for a drive into the countryside. I also stayed at one of the ApartmentK studios in Reykjavik – one of the owners is an interior designer and he styled all of the apartments. Very swish!
