I just heard about the newly-founded German design studio VIAL namely because of NOOK, their new stool made from a single piece of an innovative material called VarioLine. This material is an extremely sturdy and weatherproof plastic designed by Patrick Frey of Patrick Frey Industrial Design.
Winner of the iF product design award 2010 just a few weeks ago, it is an attractive piece indoors or outside in the garden, perfect for all seasons. I’m counting eight colors on their website, though there could be more. I’m a big fan of the white, beige and gray stools and can see them fitting in perfectly in a living or dining room area, but also in a child’s room or on the patio.
About VIAL, “VIAL is a family-run company headquartered in Aachen, Germany. Its founders, Wolf, Julia and Bernd Hoesch-Vial, were inspired by the idea of designing beautiful products by harnessing the technological benefits of innovative materials and the novel creative opportunities they present.”
What do YOU think of the Nook stool?

This is lovely. It reminds me of Moorish architecture as well as turbines. Since it feels equal parts contemporary and traditional to me, I think it would be a great fit for a number of styles.

Oh, those are cool! I have stools because of the boys, and it’s hard to find stylish ones.

I love the stool! What a great pop of color, and it seems very practical. Not only does it look good, it’s weatherproof too! Awesome.

I like it…in the black especially…I’m a touchy feely kind of person and would have to see how it feels before purchasing…I wonder if any stores in Toronto carry it yet.

In truth, I can’t decide. I like the concept, am just not certain about the material. I think i’d need to see one in the flesh to make my mind up.

nina, I was just thinking that too! It does look like paper…like I would be afraid to stand on it without going up to it and checking it out first! I like that about it though….makes you do a double-take!

Love the shape- great take on the ceramic garden stool- how about in those colors but leather, with individual “studding” (I can’t think of the word right now!) along the shape…Really you can stand on them?

they remind me of those little plastic puzzle spheres… i can’t think of a better way to describe them. but it had about 8 pieces that were peanut shaped and you had to fit them together again to form a sphere. the shape of them (individually) reminds me a lot of Nook stool. it’s super cute though :)

I love it! Also love the coffee table. I think it would work in my home. Love the ethnic look of the shape, and love the modern materials! I want one. Wonder if they ship to the U.S. Going to find out.

I can see a group of these in different colours placed outdoors. At a coffee shop maybe or my backyard. They look great. The white is my favourite too.

I just got mine today (in red) and I love it. It is very heavy and solid. I’m well impressed.
