Anettes Hus

This is why I love the internet, because a mere decade ago I couldn’t pop in to visit someone living hundreds of miles away. And now, today, it’s an everyday occurrence. This is why I love and cherish my visits to see Anette Karlsen on the web at Anettes Hus… Just look at her photos. Yes, these are of her home in gorgeous Norway. How can all of these images in winter white and shades of green with touches of silver not pull a heart string? Have a glance below and tell me, do I need say more?

Anettes Hus

Anettes Hus

What I love about her home: It feels simple and pure, natural. A delicate crystal chandelier. The reflection of a heart in the door, with what appears to be a bit of lace too. I love the various tones of white, as white feels less clinical and more cozy when various tints and tones are used together. Her obvious fondness for tea. The old doors with vintage handles and glass. The vintage decorating touches. Her gorgeous ceramics. White paneled walls. Sigh. This is exactly how I envision a country home to be.

What words come to mind when you look at these photos? What do you appreciate about this style? What elements do you like and could you live with that you see here?

First thing I think of is “escapism” to a beautiful little world, a bubble that makes me feel good.

If there is an internet connection I could live there for the holidays: I love the internet too. A lot. :) Actually, I prefer a bit more modern style, with elements of “white traditions”.

Oh, that is gorgeous. I love those doors! Something about it feels almost fairy-tale-like to me, maybe it’s the effect of the snow picture, though. It looks so calm and comfortable and beautifully simple.

I especially like the third from the top, it has a fairytale character and there´s just a little part of a firtree on the right – maybe the Christmas tree, which I can imagine with real white candles and vintage glass, white porcelain and antique mirror ornaments.
I adore the style, however I´m missing fabric and different textures to give depth and layer and to make it feel more inviting. I don´t mean a lot of “stuff”, just warmth – rugs, pillows, blankets, sheep skins….

reminded me of growing up in rural Vermont around old farmhouses…so “nostalgic” is the word that came to mind for me. and then “cross-country skiing” when I saw the snow, the barn and the blue blue sky!

I recently came across a new (to me) magazine called life:beautiful while I was waiting for fabric at a national/chain craft store. I picked it up to kill time and ended up briefly skimming an article that stated we should all seek to have humble, beautiful homes. I’m paraphrasing, because like a fool I didn’t buy the issue and now it’s off the stands. I would love to delve into the author’s concept of a humble, beautiful home more so I am determined to buy that issue somehow.

My point (and I am getting there!) is that this is how I picture a humble, beautiful home. Not precious, not perfect, and not staged to impress anyone other than the people who call it home. And yet, it is certainly beautiful top to bottom. Humble and beautiful are the words that come to my mind when I look at this home.

I just hope the same look can be achieved with a darker palette in my home. As much as I love all the pale colors here and around the web in other home tours I have seen, it just doesn’t work for me. I feel most comfortable surrounded by dark, rich colors. To each his own, yes?
