Copenhagen Tips?

I’ll soon be off again only this time I’ll leave for Copenhagen in the coming weekend where I’ll be camping out for a week to direct various shoots. I’m excited because all of the homes that we are shooting are so beautiful and I can’t wait to meet the home owners, see some of their most cherish possessions and to gather their tips to weave into the Decorate book for all of you to see in the near future!

Copenhagen - Got tips?

We’ll also be in Sweden for the day in a tiny town along the coast, and hopping around Denmark a bit, but our base is in Copenhagen and though I doubt I’ll have time to do much of anything outside of work I’d love to know if you have any absolute “must-see” spots there that I should visit. Restaurants and cafes would be nice, but also shops for design. We are staying near Tivoli Gardens so near to there would be my preference. If you’d like to drop some tips here I’d really appreciate it and I know others who are Copenhagen bound this year would also appreciate reading your ideas, too! Thank you so much! :)

One of my personal favorit design shops is Stilleben A little gem with quirky design is Stilleben in Læderstræde http://stilleben.dk/index.php/store/dk

And near by is a qauint shop called Creme de la Creme ala Edgar http://www.cremedelacremealaedgar.dk/ This shop has a unique decorand carries kids clothes and accessories.

For Danish furniture classics I suggest Illums Bolighus and from there you can walk directly in to The Royal Café and try their Smushi and try a fusion of Danish Smørrebrød and Sushi served in great surroundings.

If you want to see Arne Jacobsen furniture, cutlery and what not in action while you dine – you should order a table at the restaurant Alberto K at Royal Hotel http://www3.aok.dk/kunder/albertok/indexf_dk.html

Copenhagen’s good weather is unbeatable, although kind of rare– if it’s sunny you should definitely save time for a walk through the botanical gardens (http://botanik.snm.ku.dk) right next to Norreport station.

La Glace (http://www.laglace.dk/eng) is supposed to be the best confectionery in Cph. The best thing to do, though, is just to get lost on all the side streets in the old city, around Stroget. There are so many shops and secrets to stumble upon!

You know, I read the Design Sponge guide and it had a lot of great ideas, but they seem pretty time consuming and more oriented towards somebody staying for a longer amount of time with a focus on big design names.

I’m pretty sure you’re going to want to do more on up-and-coming artists, so I’m curious to see what others may post regarding this!

We’re planning on enjoying nighttime in the Tivoli gardens, riding around town using a bike rental from our hotel or the seemingly omnipresent CityBikes, and seeing if some old family haunts still exist. The Danish Resistance Museum is supposed to be pretty good, so we’ll be checking that out – but it’s not very design-oriented =)

Two design places on my must-see list so far are the Royal Copenhagen flagship and Normann Copenhagen. Nothing totally new there, but I’m curious!

Oh, and we’re planning on hitting the Louisiana Art Museum on our way up to Sweden. Went there a lot w/my family when we lived in Copenhagen =) Totally gorgeous on the coast!

  22. 22 Marie commented:

I live in Copenhagen, and could come up with billion of tips, but you get my favourites – all pretty close to the place you are going to stay :).

I live at Christianshavn, an artifical island in Copenhagen – only five minutes away from the centre. You should really take a walk here (the busses 2A, 40 and 66 from the central station, or the metro from Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv – or a walk, only take about 15 minutes from the centre). It’s such a nice place with the canals and beautiful houses :). And when you’re here, you can visit Christiania – a bit of a controversial place in Copenhagen, but with such a beautiful nature!

I would also recommend a trip to Glyptoteket. I just love their little winter garden, such a nice and peaceful place – at least when there aren’t too many people :). http://www.glyptoteket.dk/.

Or Rosenborg Castle, where you can see the Danish crown jewels, and take a walk in The King’s Garden.

  23. 23 Anne commented:

I highly suggest eating at Det Lille Apotek

    # Address: Store Kannikestræde 15, KØBENHAVN
    # Phone: 33125606

especially if you like beef – they serve a hunk of steak and veggies to you on a super-heated lava-stone plate and you let it sit there until it’s cooked to your liking, then eat it. It’s called stone beef and really fun. The restaurant is cozy and adorable, too, but can get crowded, so I suggest going earlier in the evening if you can.

    Have fun!

Hi, I live in Copenhagen, I hope you’ll have a nice trip visiting;)
The weather has been really sunny and nice the last week, but it can still be chilly in the evenings, so bring your flipflops AND a sweater.

Strøget is the street with the most tourists, and you’ll find a lot of flag ship stores for international brands her. Instead you should go down the street called Kompagnistræde, whic turns into Læderstræde which is the one is the one Blogarella mentions. On Badstuestræde there’s also a nice ceramic store called Helbak/Schening: http://www.helbak-scherning.dk/03.html.

Studiestræde and Skt Peders Stræde also has nice shops.

If you are going anywhere near the part of Copenhagen called Nørrebro, you should definitely visit Elmegade, Ravnsborggade and Skt Hans Torv. Ravnsbordgade has a lot of antiqueshops. Nearby these streets lies the cemetary called “Assistens Cemetary”. People used it as a park in the summertime, and a lot of famous people is buried her, including jazz musicians, scientists and poets.

Two or three years ago I more or less accidently ran into a craft market in Copenhagen. I forgot where it was, but I bought an adorable necklace by a designer named Lotte Kohl. I found her website: http://www.kohldesign.dk/smykker.html

Her jewelry can be bought here
    Kunstindustrimussests butik
    bredgade 66
    1260 København

I visit Copenhagen every summer and it is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever been. You also gotta check out a shop called “Indiska” (http://indiska.com/). It is not exactly a small shop, but rather small chain with a very unique style.

I am an expat living in Copenhagen and while lots of great suggestions have already been offered, I will try to add a few more.

    1. Great mid century modern finds, reasonable prices: visit BW warehouse in Amager. Only open on even weekends, it is full of great finds!

    2. Great mid century modern, not so great prices: Roxy Classic in Norrebro. Go to “Sankt Hans Torv” while there and enjoy a leisurely drink or stroll

    3. Hay, as mentioned before, is great.

    4. Go to Vesterbro, “Istegade,” for a nice stroll down an electric street with both great shops and some of Copenhagen’s seedy side. Highly recommened, very popular with locals and you will have some great street watching. Check out “Bang & Jenson” for a simple dinner or streetside coffee.

    5. Jolene’s, in the meatpacking district is a great local haunt for a casual drink later at night on weekends. Great outdoor seating

For a bit higher scale venture, check out “Noma” if you can, but likely cannot, get a reservation this late. One of best places in world. Maybe tell them you write a fabulous blog:)

And so many more….but I am sure others will help.

Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I went to the art museum and then fabric shopping not design looking. Have fun!

You must go to PatéPaté in the old meat market district just behind the central train station. Also visit some of the night clubs of that area.

Go to Casa shop downtown and Normann Copenhagen at Østerbro by the lakes for design. Mail me if you go to Østerbro – I’ll show you around ;.) Lots of great shops and eateries.

Also take a stroll through Nyhavn and have an ice cream or a beer.

i stayed one year at copenhagen to study architecture and it was such a great time! i love the danish “hygge” tradition (hyggelig means something like cozy)!

if you have time, you should visit the louisiana museum at Humlebaek – in my eyes it’s the most beautiful museum in the world!

my top five in Copenhagen center besides tho known tourist attractions are
    1. Dansk Design Center, HC Andersens Boulevard 27, DK 1553 København V – you will learn everything about danish design!
    2. Grønlykke, Læderstræde 3 and 5, København K
they sell all sorts of nice things – fabric, bedding, accesories
    http://www.groenlykke.com
    3. “Thé à la menthe”, Rådhusstræde
    It’s a café – restaurant with a very unique scandinavian-oriental fusion style.
there used to be a shop, too, where the owner sold nive home decor things from morocco. i can’t remember where it was, maybe in Læderstræde?
    4. Illums Bolighus, Amagertorv
they have EVERYTHING you can see at the Danish Design Centre – all the danish design classics and more. hold tight to your credit card!
    5. Paludan Bogcafe – it’s a very “hyggelig” cafe with a bookshop
    Fiolstræde 10-12, 1171 København K

And if you have some spare time try to get out to Amager Strandpark – it’s a public beach and it’s so cool! http://www.amager-strand.dk/

    Have fun!

Well, you know this post made my heart skip a beat! I am so excited about getting to Denmark! I was actually surfing the web over the weekend and thought of you when I bookmarked a couple new links. Here is one that lists the major craft fairs and flea markets in Copenhagen: http://tinyurl.com/38yxmnf

Here is another link to a blog called Stillestund. She had a great link to another flea market. It is outside the city and it sounds like you are going to be too busy this time, but I thought I would pass it along just in case you or someone else is interested! http://tinyurl.com/33bzkls

I agree with Karin- The Laundromat Cafe was a great little cafe!

While my husband was in CPH in February he went to the Retro Cafe. He said it was SO cool! They have loads of art displayed and they are completely run by volunteers so that all the profit can go to help refugees in several different countries. Apparently they hold art exhibitions as well. http://www.cafe-retro.dk

My husband also recommended the Royal Cafe which was suggested a couple times above!

I also recommend just going a street or two off the Stroget. We found so many shops that we locally owned with some of the cutest stuff ever!

We travelled to Copenhagen in December and would advise you to just wander around and be stunned by the charming houses, shops and cafes, but mostly amazed by how absolutely beautiful the Danish people are! Oh, and another thing – the locals are so casually fabulously dressed, so be prepared to feel rather frumpy in comparison!

  38. 38 Susan Serra, CKD commented:

Hi Holly! Good suggestions! Illums Bolighus is a must. Normann Copenhangen’s flagship store would be great too. I know a director there, so let me know if you’d like a personal tour. I love montana.dk, but I think that is also shown in Illums Bolighus. Paustian is a great source. Gubi and casa. I’ve always liked nyt i bo too, which is at the opposite end, near Kongs Nytorv, from where you are. Bolia.com is a possibility which is on the same street as Tivoli, not too far down. I will ask a 30 something cousin what else comes to mind.

Are you flying, taking the train up or driving? If you are driving, I suggest stopping on Femarn on the way home. It’s one of Germany’s most beautiful Baltic Sea spots. Pure and unobscured.

Everyone has already added any suggestions I might have had from my years traveling to Denmark and Sweden. You will love it, I am sure. I found myself in Copenhagen on that fateful September 11th where I had gone with my sister to relax after having had a large exhibition of my ceramic work in Hamburg. I will never forget the warmth and love with which we greeted and treated. Never ever.

Enjoy. And more than taking in the sights and design, enjoy the nature. It’s “einmalig”, in my opinion.

We’re just back from a short stay.
A must-visit is the Danish Design Centre (near the Town hall).
The David collection is on that list too, as is the Kunstmuseet.

I would highly recommend stopping at the Marimekko concept store, they have some great cups with linedrawings of skylines. Plus, pretty trays. And ofcourse loads of pretty fabrics! http://www.marimekkocopenhagen.dk/

Opposite Marimekko is a wonderful furniture shop, too. Can’t remember the name.
Illums Bolighuset is fabulous. We left with several bags :-) Also check out the new modern lines at Royal Copenhagen nextdoor. Illums, just a few doors down the street, was my favourite dept. store.
Cafe Europa, on the corner opposite Royal Copenhagen is a great place for lunch.
For a cheaper lunch or dinner, try Riz Raz in Kompagniestraede (just east of Stroget). The mediterranean style veggie buffet is delicious!
I really enjoyed the delicious cakes at La Glace (just off Stroget) and Lagkagehuset was our daily coffee-and-a-cake stop :-)

Oh – and before you undertake the journey there, check if the big weekend fleamarket at Rovsingsgade is actually on. We arrive there to find the hall closed because they didn’t have a valid permit for the market! The market at Den Bla Hal where we ended up wasn’t that good, plus it was a very long walk from the metrostation… but there’s lots more to choose from! http://www.visitcopenhagen.com/content/tourist/eat_drink_and_shop/shopping/home_and_interior_design/flea_markets

Hope you have a wonderful time and better weather than we had!

Oh, and ofcourse all the shops on Vesterbrogade! Bolia has nice furniture and accessories, and so does Bo Design (just off Vesterbrogade).
Somewhere along the street there’s also a very trendy Vietnamese restaurant, Le Le … something or other. No reservations taken so you just show up and sip a cocktail while you wait for a table. Delicious food and a great atmosphere.

I loved having tea at “Tea Time” in Norrebro, it is a very feminine, lovely place…don’t miss it! Two other places that are stuck in my mind are the SAS hotel (someone else already mentioned it) that Arne Jacobson designed. When there, ask to see room 606. That is the last room left that was never changed. Everything in there is an original Arne Jacobson:

the other spot I found memorable is a room the author Hans Christian Anderson used to live in. It is a little locked room in a department store but you can ask to have a sales lady open it for you: http://nikella.blogspot.com/2009/02/hans-christian-andersen-and-ugly.html

Check out: http://www.retrovilla.dk/ run by Mette Helena Rasmussen. She’s open until 1730 this friday. I know the website is in danish, but the pictures should give you a pretty good idea.

Address: Puggaardsgade 7, kælderen, 1573 København V. which is very close to Tivoli.

Hi there! don’t usually comment but I live in Sweden near Copenhagen and I can recommend visiting the shop Inblik in Christianshavn. They have lots of crazy cool Danish design things! I think the street is Torvegade…

You’ll be in heaven. No joke. So much to see. Thrifting is amazing. Check out the streets around Vestergade, Studiestaede. I lived there last summer and will be moving there in September. You won’t want to leave. I clearly didn’t!

Ah Denmark, my second favorite place on earth.

You already got more than enough suggestions to keep you busy for a year. But I’ll second the one about thrifting. I usually donate my clothes when I leave so I can fill my suitcase with my thrift store finds.

I’ve only been to Sweden once, so no help there.

    Hi Holly,

Once you’re all shopped out and done looking at modern design, head down to Thorvaldsens Museum, it’s just a few minutes walk from Strøget, the main shopping street.

It is an absolute gem! Not only for its beautiful collection of sculptures by Thorvaldsen, and paintings and other works by other artist. The building in itself is absolutely fantastic. Floors, ceilings and walls are covered in decoration very much inspired by Pompeiian style which very much in fashion at the time of the construction of this museum.

Oh and the entrance is free on Wednesdays! :-)

I hope you have a wonderful time in my native Denmark! I am not jealous at all….

Hope I’m not too late but if so, this might be a good guide future travellers to KBH. Don’t miss the Mikkeler bar in Vesterbro – not only is this a boutique micro brewery with so many brilliant beers for you to try, but it has a lovely, simple design to it. Great people, great drinks.

My daughter is living in Copenhagen and that has given us the opportunity to visit many times. It is a dream city for anyone in the art and design field to visit. Hope you had a fabulous time. I look forward to your book.
