Wall Arrangements

This wallpaper (I bet none of us would look twice at until now), those small nature-inspired watercolors with the white borders, the rustic wooden chair… it’s so charming. It was taken by Flickr photographer/blogger Dennis Homenkrov in Russia and it totally speaks to me — which surprised me a bit as this is not a palette I naturally am drawn towards. Does it speak to you? If so, what does it say?

It says to me that most of us need to totally loosen up when it comes to how we arrange things on the wall and more specifically, what we use to display our pretty things in on the walls. I think it’s easy to assume that all art must be framed to look good but this photo clearly proves otherwise. If you pin, tape, staple or tack things up with some thought, neatly even, you can place things on your wall that inspire you and you don’t have to spend much money in the process. I love a collection of framed art or even a single framed piece on the wall, don’t get me wrong, but now and then it’s fun to just go with something a bit more freestyle and random.

I love it and feel like it needs to be framed. It’s simple and lived in, not too serious, yet homey and inviting. It feels like the wallpaper has been there forever in some rustic house that an artist bought and she snapped a shot of her landscape studies on the wall of her studio in the house. It just begs for interpretations…

I NEED the freestyle & random to free up my mind – as designers, we spend a lot of time ensuring things find their rightful place and without a ‘special place’ I’d go nuts. I love structure and symmetry, but abstract and random are the fruits of design. (In my opinion.)

It´s not really my cup of tea, but I still like it when I see it like this.

I really love the casual feel of this! I have been wanting to do this with so many little photographs and art pieces. I am totally inspired, thanks!

The wallpaper remainds me of one my aunt had in her kitchen for YEARS and makes me miss her. It also happens to remind me of the Burchfield exhibit I saw at the Whitney on Saturday. One room had his watercolor paintings against this very vibrant wallpaper he had designed. Initially I thought it was too much, but a few mins in the space and I totally feel in love with it.

I think it looks ‘normal’. Somebody actually lives there and put up things that they love, not things they read they should put up. I love it for what it is – very honest and a lovely image.

Homey, lived in, real…I love the staples! The watercolors are beautiful, I would be happy to have one.

I recently saw in a magazine where the home owner had (neatly) ripped pages out of magazines and put them straight onto the wall, kind of like an inspiration board.
I loved this idea, but as I’m renting, I can’t really ‘tack’ things to the wall. So I’m thinking of using two white painted doors that I took off a cupboard – lean them up against the wall near my desk and tack fashion (and other) pictures of inspiration and beauty on to it!

Everybody else seems to like this look, but I think the pictures blend into the wallpaper too much.

I think what makes it work is the white border on the photos. It does seem a little busy to my eye, but I love the idea and the wallpaper. I probably am going to try it in my bedroom/study and see what I think!

My friend and I got into a debate over framed art and he of course had his elitist notions that any art of value must be framed, and if it is not then it does not have value. I however believe that there are more creative ways to use wall art, so take that!
