Finn Juhl: Poeten
Do you have a favorite sofa? One of mine is the Poeten by Finn Juhl. I would love to own this sofa in all of it’s curvy glory. To me, it’s feminine and modern… and simply stunning. I imagine owning one and displaying it proudly in a sitting room, near a beautiful large window. Finn Juhl is a Danish designer trained as an architect, not a furniture designer, who was born in 1912.
Best known for his furniture, he regenerated Danish furniture design in the 40s with designs that set him apart from his contemporaries. He sadly passed away in 1989, however since 2001 the the license for his furniture belongs exclusively to Danish company Hansen & Sorensen and the Poeten is one of them. “Poeten is made to the finest manufacturing standards with hand-sewn upholstery, and its legs come in several different types of wood.”
All I know is that I want one! I imagine it in turquoise velvet with a patterned seat cover, or in white leather (ahhh), or even in a gorgeous Designers Guild fabric… Ah. Such an eye-catcher. Imagine having buttons that are covered in a different color fabric — like a gray sofa with mustard-color buttons? :)

This is the most gorgeous sofa I have ever seen in my life. If I can’t have it, at least I want to draw it.

Those are gorgeous!! The curvature of the sofas just make them look so comfy! I love the idea about having the buttons in a different color…Gray with pink buttons would be a great idea for a girl’s room.

Oh, yes! This is my absolute favorite couch right now. I want it in a bad way, but its kind of impractical for my family because its so small. It would, however, be perfect for snuggling up in a little a reading nook.

Mmmmm it looks so comfortable…like it wants to envelope you in its arms. The story I heard was that a hug married a sofa and they named their baby Poeten!

When I was in college I was able to do a study abroad summer semester in Copenhagen. We did a lot of touring around Scandinavia and one of our stops was Finn Juhl’s house! It was a small house packed full of his furniture. I need to go back and look through my pictures, but I’m pretty sure that sofa was in his house.

I love everything about the very first photo! The green sofa (love that green) has become an accent to the room and the white and light lilac and light pink colors make the room look so adorable! I love it!! I agree with you that this sofa design is feminine and modern. How interesting is it that Finn Juhl was trained as an architect, not a furniture designer!

Oh yes, it’s so lovely. I still remember the first time I saw it “in the flesh”. It was a green version and I was ready to buy it there and then – eventhough it didn’t match our interior at all. :-)
It was designed for Finn Juhl’s own home which you can visit. It was subsequently named after a Danish cartoon strip, turned into a movie which was much loved, called The Poet and His Little Wife (or something along those lines. :-)) The poet would lie on his (Poeten) sofa to get inspired.
And it is expensive because a lot of it is handmade. :-)
