Who Inspired You To Blog?

Hello friends, it is Leslie again here today with some delicious inspiration for you by Aran Goyoaga of the award winning blog canelle et vanille. When I stumbled upon the blogging world in January of 2009 Aran’s blog was one of the first three I fell into. I stared at her work with my jaw open in absolute awe.

I loved Aran’s sense of lighting, use of color and texture, not to mention all the baking wonders she seemed to meticulously whip up in her kitchen. Don’t you think it is a gift when you can find someone who inspires you to try something new? The fact that she was self-taught in photography just blew me away and later inspired me to try taking photographs for my own blog.

Between Aran, Holly and Benita (of Chez Larrson) I knew I wanted to start a blog. I am curious about whom if anyone inspired you to start a blog? Sometimes it can be nice to call out those who inspired you and say thank you. Today I am saying thank you Aran for all the beauty you create and share.

To say truth, it was Benita the first I discovered and who´s blog inspired to start. Aran is from near where I live so discovering her in distance was such a pleasure and her photography is so charming…and inspiring, that makes me try to improve my poor one.

Honestly, I think Holly was! I started reading Decor8 right after she started it, so when it came time for us to move overseas, starting a blog seemed like a good way to stay in touch with friends and family. I still keep that blog active, but now I also have another blog, my ‘creative blog’ as I call it, which is also kept up to date. I also started reading Apartment Therapy at the same time, back in 2006/2007.

    Thanks Holly!

    what a thoughtful post!
a blogger on and off for quite some time, i finally hit my stride two years ago after stumbling upon the hopelessly romantic blog, le love, and the sinful food blog, sunday suppers. to have something that stirs up inspiration in its readers is a gift… and i now use my love of music, fashion, food and literature to make the blog world a better place :)

I’m so glad you started a blog, you’ve provided me with sooooo much inspiration!

Hi Leslie – great question – I been blogging for almost a year, and my inspirations to get started were Lara Cameron who has a lovely design blog called Kirin Notebook (http://kirinote.blogspot.com/), Jodie from Ric Rac (http://vintagericrac.blogspot.com/) who writes clever posts and makes clever things, and Kirsty from Kootoyoo (http://www.kootoyoo.com/) who has great a style and aesthetic. Lots of blogs since then have also been inspirational, but I have these people to thank for setting the bar high for what I wanted my blog to be like.
P.S. Since doing the Blogging your Way course with you and Holly this year, my blog has been inspired in all sorts of ways by all sorts of people – it was great – thanks!

I am so grateful for the initial blogs and bloggers that I actually stumbled upon…having no idea that there was this wonderful little (or big:) community out there that I, too could be a part of. It came @ an absolutely perfect time in my life and I completely agree that it IS a gift that I hope to pass on to others!

Although hers was not the first few blogs that I stumbled into, I was inspired to start a blog by Jessica, @ http://kitchenbelleicious.blogspot.com/. I wrote her an e-mail, and she wrote back asking, “What is the name of your blog?” I thought, “ME?? What would I blog about??” When I told her that I didn’t have a blog, she replied by saying, “By all means, if [or when] you decide to start one, let me help you!!” … I thought this was so sweet, that she (living very far away and not knowing me!) offered to take the time to assist me!

…other females inspiring, connecting, befriending, creating, sharing, teaching one another…I realized that this one ‘party’ that I did NOT want to miss out on.

    Ciao Leslie!

Thanks for sharing this and some “behind the scenes” of your early blogging days!

For me it was for sure Creature Comforts that I discovered in spring 2009 and inspired me to start my own blog last autumn. It’s still and always an fanbulous source of inspiration and I admire it so much.

I have so many other beloved blogs and they are simply too many to mention.
Let me just add that the next big step in terms of inspiration, skills, confidence (and fun!) was the amazing Blogging Your Way class I took here with Holly and you: I can only highly recommend it to anybody in blogland and for me it was simply one of the best learning experience I’ve ever had. THANK YOU!

First, I have to say that these photos are art! Quite inspiring…..

I just started blogging and that’s because I had just discovered a passion and also after coming across some beautiful blogs: made by girl, my notebook, decor8. All these blogs showed me originality and they talk about what I love now which is decor.
    So, thank you so much.

Alicia Paulson inspired me to blog. I found Posy gets Cozy through a random search on Google one day for Bird imagery. It was a few years ago and at that point Alicia had been making paper maiche birds.
I was instantly taken with her writing style and the photographs that she took of her home.
As I read more deeply I found that here was a woman after my own heart.
She inspired me to really chase after my own dream, through her self deprecating humor, colorful home, love of dogs, and continual stream of projects.

Thank you, Alicia, for leading me to this wonderful path!

    (1) Lisa at The Red Thread, who very kindly commisioned a wood you believe art work for me, when the one I loved had sold out. Holly has been such a huge inspiration for me. I found Decor8 by accident about three years ago and immediately had to go back again and again to read the daily entries. Its not just the images that she puts together, (which are stunning) its the way she writes, in a truly genuine way. When I sit with my cup of tea in the morning and check out the blog, I feel like I am sharing time with a sister or best friend. I have since started to blog and enjoy every minute of it!

  20. 20 Amanda commented:

Ana at Knock-Off Wood is a huge inspiration for me. Not only did I start woodworking, but I also started my blog to track my many projects. The process has been exciting and terrifying. Blogging definately makes me think more.

  21. 21 Karen M. Andersen commented:

Hi Leslie :) How ironic! I did exactly the same thing yesterday on my own blog (http://www.karenmandersen.com). I reached out and said thank you to my two main art/craft inspirations who, by sharing their art and life online, help to keep me focussed and inspired to make AND blog. It felt so good to give back and tell them what they mean to me. I really encourage everyone to do the same.

I was first inspired to start blogging by then-scrapbooker and now artist/crafter-extraordinaire Elsie Flannigan (BLOG: http://www.abeautifulmess.typepad.com/) around 5 years ago. My blog has undergone a couple of reincarnations since then, and I have stopped and started again due to my marriage breakdown a couple of years ago. I was inspired to start up a blog again in 2009 by Elsie and her best friend in art and craft Rachel Denbow (BLOG: http://racheldenbow.blogspot.com/). Rachel is a young mum like me who is into so many of the same things that I am, so she is a particularly inspiring personality to me as she faces many of the same dilemmas that all crafty mums (and mums for that matter!) face. So, it is because of Elsie and Rachel that I blog, and chose to return to my crafty roots. Blogging artists Kelly Rae Roberts, Mati McDonough, Michele Maule, Stephanie Levy, and Lisa Congdon all inspire me to blog about my art and fuel my artistic drive and dreams, so I owe them a huge vote of thanks also!

Thank you for this topic Leslie…it is very insightful and I will be interested to read others’ comments/experiences too!

    Karen xx

Beautiful photographs! I can see why you were inspired by Aran!

One of the main people who inspired me to start a blog was Marisa from Creative Thursday (http://creativethursday.typepad.com/). I found her blog at just the right time—I was getting back into art, but wasn’t sure what I was doing. When I saw Marisa in action {making a living as a full-time artist, largely through online means}, I got a glimmer of the life I wanted to create, at a time when I was really trying to figure that out. I still follow Marisa’s blog regularly, nearly three years later, and she continues to inspire me to keep creating my own way.

I was also inspired by my friend Era—she was the only person I knew (in person) that had a blog, and this really made a connection for me–I could write a blog! She still writes a beautiful blog about life, crafts, and her biggest passion: growing things. (http://www.era-errant.blogspot.com/)

Actually it would be my husband, then new friend. 6-7 years ago I met Carlos online, while we were living thousands of miles away from each other. He blogged back then (still does once in a while) and sent me the link to his blog. I loved that his blog let me see these pieces of him, however cryptic he made them. Each post felt like a journey, moving farther down some wooded path. I immediately started blogging myself, hoping to share little pieces of myself with the world as well. I’m not sure my writing has had the same affect on other people Carlos’ had on me. But deep down I do hope somewhere someone identifies with even just a part of me. Over the following 4-5 years Carlos and I continued to talk and became close friends. Then when he moved to the U.S. we finally admitted we had fallen in love and we’ve been together since :) He’s really supportive of my blogging, so if anything, I’m able to share pieces of myself with him that way as well as being together.

I fell in love with this blog, the pictures were breath taking and the content was so rich. It was Holly, I’ve seen blogs before but none captured me as hers. Since then I’ve found many new and exciting blogs, but not a lot can capture professionalism, while staying visually appealing.

Such a great question! I just recently got into blogging and it was really Decor 8 and Lushlee that inspired me to get going on my own blog! Plus Holly’s class and learning from both of you was truly amazing and inspiring!!

    Holly,
This is such a great idea. I absolutely remember the very first time I ever saw a blog…it was the wonderful Velvet & Linen. I’ve been inspired by so many, but Brooke’s blog opened up a whole new world that I had always wanted to be a part of…just never knew it existed.
Because of one blog I found many other wonderful places to visit and be inspired. Decor 8 is one of them!
Love Aran too. She was my first guest chef. I fell hard too.

I am a new blogger, just began in late January 2010 and just about to hit my 100th post.

My inspiration to begin to blog was both of my daughters, who write great blogs and kept inviting me to join them. “You will love blogging, Mom!”

They were right. Thanks Christy and Jenny.

The first blog I ever read was http://pure-essence.net/ – blogging was relatively new back then and Dodo’s blog was the first ‘personal’ blog I’d ever seen. Pure Essence has changed a lot over the years and now it tends to be more about technical things but back in the day it was so interesting to get a glimpse into someone’s life.

I started my first blog about a year later on Xanga… I won’t give giving out the URL because I will die of embarrassment!

    Hi Holly,
I was inspired to blog by my bff, Barbara (a.k.a. Mammamsterdam). I am going through very difficult times and she repeaedly told me that blogging would help me, although I was quite skeptical at first. I do not particularly like to write, but I like to draw and paint so I decided to start a sort of online visual journal to commit myself to creating on a more or less regular basis, hoping that rediscovering my creativity would help me rebuilding my life. And I must say my friend was right. The support I receive from unknown kindred spirits from all over the world is amazing, it feels so real, not just virtual, and helps me feel less alone in this difficult journey. And my commitment to blogging helps me to move forward, to take steps even if I still don’t know exactly where I am going.

I was inspired to blog after subscribing to the Craft Gossip newsletter after starting my own business sewing accessories out of felted wool, denim and other vintage items. The blogs highlighted in that newsletter have inspired my work and taught me some new sewing techniques.

I love to find out how projects come to life. I’m pretty new to this and still trying to figure out what to show and talk about on my blog. my blog keeps me accountable, helps me get more exposure and grow as an artist.

    Hi there,

I got inspired by Dos Family. I just love the nice clean, Scandinavian photography and the cool vintage homes.
I’m an allround styling student from Holland, so I see beautiful things almost everyday, cause I have to search images in magazines or online. It seems like a waste to not share these things with others…At first I didn’t want to participate with this new trend called blogging. But then I thought, I like taking pictures en share pretty things, so why not start a blog? I’ve only just begon, but who counting? :)

Wow! Awesome question, one you don’t really think about but you always know. I am relatively new at blogging myself. I just started about a month ago and I am always trying to find excuses to do it during my day. I simply love it! Before that I was quite the creeper. I was an avid reader but never a participater. There are three blogs I read everyday first and foremost before anything starts. These lovely ladies put me over the edge to blog myself. http://ohhellofriend.blogspot.com/ http://ohsobeautifulpaper.com/ and http://ruffledblog.com/ They truely inspire me, and little do they probobly know I aspire to be much like them. Blogging lets me live in my “inner self” for a couple of hours today. It really is a joy!

I started blogging in 2003! I must not be very good at it because I only have 8 followers, and 7 email subscribers. I was exploring the technology and the idea of preserving ideas while still sharing them all. The previous year my mother died unexpectedly and she was a talented writer – sending emails with short theater scripts, ect. She was never able to make a compedium. So, for me, it started as an exploration, then as I moved to Austria a way to keep track of my (mis)adventures. Now, I am in Italy but I rarely write about Italians I discovered blogs about home design and cooking and I started to post my crafts… right now I’m trying to keep a mix for my “readership” (ha ha ha) and am working on posting a new pressure cooker recipe a month, a craft a month, ect.
