US Book Cover of Decorate
Okay you guys, now I’m really doing flips because I just saw the cover of Decorate in the US on the Chronicle website thanks to Laura Lee for sending it to me. This is very exciting! Wow, what a day this has been – a very emotional one! It’s all so real to me now. On this cover is the home of a friend of mine who is a stylist — I can’t wait to show you more in the book.
I hope you like the US cover! I do, Chronicle did a nice job on it! :) I feel so shy all of sudden — like I want to run and hide under the blankets! It’s all becoming very real for me, this project I’ve had to keep more or less quiet for since the beginning of the year. I can’t wait to see it in stores and get your opinion of the text and photos inside.
If you would like to pre-order the US version you can do so now though it won’t ship until after April 20th — but again you can pre-order it here on the Chronicle website.

Oh my gosh, Holly. That is such exciting news! I am so thrilled for you. Chronicle is one of my favorite publishers because they always have such beautiful books, so I am not surprised that they are your publisher. I have been on a strict no-new-books rule due to the horrible economy severely shrinking my budget, but I’m thinking maybe I can find something in my house to sell on Ebay and then use that money to buy your book. You have been such an inspiration to me in so many ways that it would mean a lot to me to have a tangible piece of you in my home. Just imagine me and all your fans are doing the happy dance for you right about now!
Best to you always,

November 11th, 2010 at 10:07am
@Susie – I don’t think so though perhaps one of them so you may be right. What firm do you work for? Each cover has two homes that are based in two different countries.
November 11th, 2010 at 10:11am
@Idoia – It’s funny to hear you say that — I bet it’s because the American cover has a European home and the European cover has an American home (though the owner is from London but she still has a very New York/London aesthetic which I’m guessing comes across as looking more American to the European eye!). Your opinion is so fascinating to hear, thank you!!!

Congrats Holly!!! Both covers look great though it is funny that it should be the same book as the aesthetic is completely different. Being European I also prefer the American cover as it’s cleaner and feels less packed. It’s also funny that the American version says 1.000 “professional” ideas, while the European says “inspirational”. Good old Europe! ;))

REALLY love the American cover (probably because I’m an American). Now I really can’t wait to read it!
November 11th, 2010 at 4:03pm
@Lisa H. – Yeah I noticed that too — but I think either way I’m pretty happy with the results because I can’t believe this is my book, ya know? Joanna and I worked hard on this and it was quite a lot to pull together in less than a year. I just feel so honored to have not one book, but two, and then it was sold to Germany and I have more good news to share later… but it was sold to another country too. I have had a really great week so far and feel super emotional about it all. I never realized that it would impact me emotionally. I have been dreaming of this moment since I was 6 years old making my books on the floor of my bedroom by hand, always wanting to grow up someday to be a writer, and well the flood of emotion I’m experiencing this week lets me know that I have indeed reached a real dream. You know some dreams you dream of and then you get them and it’s like, “awww, that was nice” and then you wonder why you dreamed about it so long as once you had it well it meant so little? This dream is the real deal. I’ve been really emotional all week – not crying or anything – just emotional like I feel very connected and excited and a bit humbled and shy but also very honored and a bit like, “oh wow, this can’t be”. I was even shaking as I typed this post! Funny, huh!?
November 11th, 2010 at 4:07pm
@Katie – Thanks for asking! I like both because I selected the locations for the book so every home we show has something about it that I like – and all of the homes inside are very different – so I like that element, it will appeal to everyone.
But on the UK cover, I love that it says, “founder of decor8″ near my name – that was a real honor for me and I am so happy because that will only build my brand/blog on this side of the pond where the book is sold. I love what Chronicle did as well, they really did a nice job on the typeface, especially for our names, I love that.
November 11th, 2010 at 4:08pm
@Jane – Yes that is funny, huh? I think it has to do with a book not being able to be published by two different publishers with the same name so they had to change the working title and so by changing professional and inspirational it made the title different. That is purely a guess, but I’m thinking that is why.
November 11th, 2010 at 4:12pm
Belinda – The content for both books, from what I’ve been told, is the same with one exception – I think the resources may have more UK/Europe in the UK version and the US one has more US resources. But that is only a maybe, perhaps they combined both for both books. I will know when they send it to me. As for the imagery, the rooms and layouts are the same in each book. The home on the UK cover is featured inside and the home on the US cover is featured inside of both books. The UK version is written in British English and the US one is in American English – that is also the difference.

@Jane – Yup – that is Rita Konig’s flat in New York City. I had such a fun day there with Debi over the summer. And Rita is flat out awesome in person. She was so helpful. Once we got into our groove, she left for the day and let Debi and I do our thing. It was so fun to poke around her gorgeous flat. Rita has an innate sense of style that it hard to beat so I am so excited that she made the cover of the UK book.

So interesting to see the different covers. This is the kind of thing that makes the Frankfurt Buch Messe so interesting. Maybe I should’ve guessed that the American cover would be cozier looking, but it didn’t occur to me until I saw the contrast. Always interesting to see different international covers. There was a whole display in Frankfurt of the bajillion covers of Steig Larson’s books (the girl with the dragon tattoo guy)—-fascinating.

November 12th, 2010 at 10:42am
Holly, both versions of the cover are beautiful. I am very happy for you. It’s one of those essential life moments – it’s giving birth to a project that’s sort of a synthesis of all you have done so far. It’s going to be life changing for you and take you in directions you never imagined.
We sit here, watching you blossom in front of our lap tops and Ipads. You give us hope that it really can be done – making dreams into reality – and that is the kind of inspiration that goes far beyond home design. You have worked very hard for this. And you have done a lot of things right. A lot. It’s very admirable from lots of perspectives.
All the best to you as you work your magic on your new home, as you gear up for the book release, and as you open your heart and mind for the new projects coming down the road.

November 12th, 2010 at 11:58am
@Diana – Thank you so much. Your words are like honey! I often think this as well, to actually inspire others through conduct and showing the way, encouraging others, and making good things possible for ourselves and others too. I don’t believe in keeping good things to myself, which is what I built my blog on – the idea of sharing and networking and bringing to light beautiful creations and their makers.
I also firmly believe that life is a circle, ever-turning, and that if we expect to have joy we have to put out positive things or else negativity will keep finding us.
You, like me, get that and I know that you also strive to be positive and encouraging which can only impact your life for the better.
Plus, decorating to me goes WAY beyond pleasing aesthetics but to the core of the home, family life – and how those in the home are getting along, the love there, the food cooked, the overall ambiance and coziness that means more than the beauty of the interiors – some candles, a warm loaf of bread and some laughter can do incredible things to a home, yet so many out there still believe that designer chairs and an expensive light is what will make their home feel great but it’s not, it’s the vibe in the house and THEN the nice surroundings but always the mood before the decoration. I try to pepper my blog with this philosophy and I think readers feel it as I write in this space because I am down-to-earth and I don’t care about being a show-off, number one, or having the best or being the best — I just want to inspire others by making them feel accepted and hopeful.
I think hope is often the best feeling out there because with hope, we have something to look forward to. Often hope is better than the thing hoped for, but just the feeling of what could be is simply magic and can often get us through some real challenging times.
Gosh, you got me started! ha ha! But I’ll end here or else I may continue writing on this topic forever. But yes, I am blossoming before you all in a sense that I am doing things that I long hoped to do and I’m still hoping for more things, but at the same time none of them are unattainable or reserved only for me — so many of you can and do have wonderful hopes being realized in your our life and by all of us connecting online, it’s causing this energy of “we are all this together” and this support network that we’ve built online is absolutely amazing. It’s nothing I ever had before and so large and far-reaching to corners of the world I never thought I’d be interacting with!
In the end, we all have a responsibility to give to others in some way, my way is to give inspiration and encouragement and to be positive. Your way of giving may be through charitable works or monetarily to the organizations that you support or something entirely different. In the end, as long as we are giving to others in some part of our life we’ll always have good things knocking on our door. The moments in my life when I became very self-absorbed were the moments when I felt nothing good coming in, hope was drying up and my life felt very difficult so the moment I realized that it was all happening because I wasn’t giving anything of myself, I started to give and the joy and good things returned and my life felt balanced and back to normal again.
I believe that this is how we make dreams become a reality, we give to others while giving to ourselves – the perfect balance – placing the oxygen mask on ourselves first and then placing it on others — not the other way around… so in taking care of myself in a positive way, I can have the energy to take care of others and so on… And this inspires you, you are inspiring someone else, they are inspiring another 10 people and so on… It’s contagious!
Okay that’s it! :)

I love the UK cover – but of course will want to order the book in any version I can get it in the US – I love lurking here on your pages and really have a lot of new links from folks you’ve shown here – thanks so much! Can’t wait – ordering bakers twine – who thought anyone could be so exicted about bakers twine and tape???
Congratulations on the book – it looks just gorgeous and I can’t wait for a copy here in the US of A!!!
