Gretel Home

March 24, 2010

I read about the best new online shop today on Daily Candy called Gretel. Have you seen it? For those of you who haven’t, you’re in for a real treat. The website design and product photography is gorgeous, very sophisticated, fresh and young but beyond that, they have some of the most beautiful selections in a single shop, it’s lovingly curated and just fantastic. Gretel was founded last year by British interior stylist Abby Kellett who clearly had an eye for modern design.

I love the smokehouse — a very modern take on a classic German design for incense that you can frequently find here in the winter during Christmas markets. And the Helgo candle holders — yes, please!

I also like their store windows,”Just as a store changes its window displays, every season we will present our products in a new light. Welcome to Gretel’s Windows.”

Studio Ziben

March 24, 2010

Would you like to see some furniture from Berlin today? Known for being edgy and innovative, there is always something interesting to find when you’re visiting Berlin and furniture designer Mariusz Malecki of Studio Ziben is one such interesting find. I was in contact with Mariusz recently and he shared some photos of his work and I’d like to show them here because it’s fascinating to see what is going on in small design studios in different parts of the world — don’t you think?

Studio Ziben

These pieces are oak and MDF and show a great deal of wit and creativity. My favorite piece is the Louis&Louis because it’s a cabinet split into two and I find this so creative and very interesting! I also like the Yoko rocking chair, it looks very comfortable and has a great silhouette. Studio Ziben has a studio in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg in case you are visiting, you should look him up and drop in to view these pieces in person! And if you see anything that you like, you may contact him directly.

Vicente Wolf – Why Blog?

March 23, 2010

I had one of those “Like, wow!” moments during lunch today when the Vicente Wolf requested my friendship on Facebook. I mean, Vicente Wolf? Hello! This man is a style icon, a design guru, a top designer! Here is a glimpse of his work from his portfolio — such sophistication and beauty, and so well-edited. His books are classy and he is soon to release a third, Lifting the Curtain on Design, which sounds like a great title — I’m officially intrigued.

Vicente Wolf - Why Blog?

If you’d like to keep up with his work, you may visit his blog where he reveals great design and style tips. I really enjoyed reading his perspective when it comes to blogging in his post, Why Blog, where he reveals why he bothers to keep a public journal and where some of his readers chime in with their viewpoints too. I always find conversations like these interesting because I think we each have our reasons for writing online but in the end it always comes back to a desire to share what one is passionate about and to attract like-minded individuals for discussion and ideas — and even friendship. It was interesting to read the views of a top designer and author like Vicente though and I think you’ll enjoy his post on this topic too.

P.S. Etsy Take Five Tuesday is taking a day off and will resume next week on Tuesday. I was going to write it today but my friend just called me — she read my blog and saw that I’m looking for a desk and found the perfect one for me at the vintage shop downtown so I have to run down there to see if it’s still available! And then a group of us are going to see Alice in English as the local theater is only showing it in English today — so I have to run! I hope this doesn’t sound irresponsible of me, but living in a foreign country means you must see films in English as they come to your city, it’s a big event for me now! :)

Rosehip Pillowcases

March 23, 2010

I’m on a girly roll today! Ha ha! But I can’t help myself… when I spotted these pretty pillowcases by Rosehip I knew I had to share them because they’re so frilly and sweet! Sometimes I really like feminine touches in the bedroom — but not really on my bed (my husband isn’t so fond of bedding that looks this sweet) but I do imagine it more for a guest bedroom or even in a summer house or on a child’s bed. It really feels like summer as I look at these photographs… all that is missing is iced sweet tea and peonies by the bed.

Rosehip Pillowcases

I would love to have a beach house (who wouldn’t?) or a country home in say, France, and on the bed have some of these darling cases to cozy up to at night after a long, hard day of lingering around picking fresh flowers and working on creative projects, cooking… ah, the thought of all that is so transporting, soothing — just lovely!

Rosehip Pillowcases

I must get away this summer, even if for a week, to relax in a rented cottage or something. Do you have an escape cottage? A stone farmhouse that awaits your visit each year for even a few weeks? It’s a wonderful thought, especially now as it’s nearing the end of March and I’m ready to start planning some time off as I didn’t get much of a rest last year between moving and unpacking. And though this summer I’ll need to travel for a work-related project (more on that later), it’s not the same as packing up your shorts and flip flops and heading to the coast to do simply nothing but picnic and build sandcastles… something I did daily as a child that I took for granted and now as an adult I miss my lazy beach days so much!

But these pillowcases… yes, they make me want to escape to a sweet little spot where I can cook and craft and just be in the moment.
