Chalkboard Illustrations at Ladenlokal

Just when you think you are the culture expert in your city you realize just how overblown your ego is and that you really need to stay on your game! I thought I knew everything that was going on in my city (typical city pride) until my friends at Anthology magazine in the faraway land of San Francisco sent me a tweet yesterday asking if I knew about Ladenlokal in Hannover, Germany (where I live) because they had put up a post about it. Ummm well… Instead of smugly replying, “But of course”, I slithered beneath my office chair because I had never heard of it in my life.

How did I miss this super cool looking fine foods shop that doubles as a cafe which is only a bike ride away? Am I working THAT hard in my office? This place is so extremely fresh looking, you simply mist check out these chalk illos from Pamela Rama too – how nice does this look?

I’m definitely hitting this place soon. And I love the idea of beautiful chalk illustrations on walls vs. the usual scribbling of grocery lists or kids marking them up in rainbow pastel colors. Very pretty and a great find Anthology!

Inspiring Design & Cooking Studio: Mit Essen spielt man

It’s so interesting to see what people are doing in the world of food photography, cooking events and food packaging. This whole world of food is something that I love to follow because it ties in closely to what I do and I find a ton of crossover between styling interiors and styling food. So many things that work for interiors also work for food and vice versa. Do you find this too?

Mit Essen spielt man

I learned this first hand when I was lecturing at a Food Styling & Photography class this past summer in Weimar, Germany. I was able to apply my knowledge of interiors to food styling and the students definitely enjoyed my take as my personal experiences and overall perspective felt very fresh to them. Like anything, if you are only getting advice from peers, you can quickly dry up or become bored. You may begin to notice too much repetition or “inspired” work and after awhile this can be very draining and frustrating. Everyone tries to be different in the exact same way! This is precisely why I like to learn from those in other creative professions in addition to my own because then your mind stays open and your ideas are always being challenged and therefore, freshened. Do you feel the same way?

Mit Essen spielt man

I would like to share something with you today that I fell upon while doing some random Googling and was surprised to learn that this fascinating company called Mit Essen spielt man (this is German and means Play With Food) belongs to a creative lady from Hannover, Germany who lives in a nearby district called Linden. I also live in Hannover (in the List) and love finding other creatives who live here and share my passions – it is very exciting! The talented lady behind Mit Essen spielt man is Lina Meyer who runs a small design and cooking studio out of a small building behind her apartment and enjoys, through her concepts and workshops, teaching others to really taste food when they are eating – to pull it apart and have fun, to be in the moment and to savor it.

Mit Essen spielt man

Lina says, “Food is a very exciting process, it is a very sensual and intimate experience. What we eat has a cultural value for us, supporting us in our identity and our way of life, tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are.” Wonderful!

I love her recent Playing With Food dinner party that she had out of her studio space in Hannover – I hope she’ll have another because I would love to attend!

This is such an inspiration to see. Wow!

Now & Then: Home of Stylist Emma Persson Lagerberg

These photos made me happy today because I love seeing how stylists decorate their homes and also how they change things up as their needs change and tastes evolve.

emma

I found this delightful home on Irene’s beautiful blog and it belongs to interior stylist Emma Persson Lagerberg that was photographed by Petra Bindel and instantly remembered it but noticed immediately that a lot has changed since I last saw it. But first, isn’t this minty green haven so serene and lovely?

What a modern, soft application of pastels applied in a very grown up way – and edited so perfectly. You can see the entire apartment here but a glimpse below. It’s glorious beyond words. At the bottom of this post, you can see the way this space looked before Emma redecorated. It was equally gorgeous then, too.

It looks like Emma’s former dining room is now a kitchen/dining room combo and the lilac accents in the apartment have been replaced with more mint.

THEN & NOW – let’s have a little fun now and examine the details, shall we?

I spot the disco ball in the window of the living room now vs. in the center of the space, too. Glad they kept the disco ball, my favorite feature! What an incredible transformation. I spot a new sofa too. It’s looking a bit more elegant, don’t you think?

What do you think?

Inspiring Views From 91 Magazine

I’m so happy to see the fresh new issue (No.4) of 91 Magazine that just went live online today. It’s packed with beautiful images (some of my favorites shown below) and inspirational projects along with decorating tips, product highlights, trendy bits and more, including a review of my upcoming book! I loved seeing the neons and pastels feature too. I have a neons and pastels board over on Pinterest if you want further inspiration but my, my, my this is the sweetest work area ever, am I right or AM I RIGHT people!?

91 Magazine

Caroline, who leads the magazine, has a great eye and each issue is getting better and better and BETTER. I love watching her grow and seeing the magazine evolve along with her. Check out the triangle art work over the bed below. How easy is that to try at home with markers, paint or washi tape?

91 Magazine

I’m also so pleased that Caroline is the very first person to have seen the PDF version of my upcoming book that is still being printed on distant shores and that she took the time to review it – see the blurb below on the left side of the page. Yippppeeee!

The first review of Decorate Workshop!

She read it and gave it a lovely review in her magazine on page 9 and I’m so appreciative of her glowing review of the UK edition of Decorate Workshop published by Jacqui Small, which is now available for pre-order over at Amazon US from Chronicle Books and Amazon UK. Thank you again Caroline, the first review of a new book is always so exciting for any author so this is extra special news today! In addition to the neons & pastels story and the review of my upcoming book, I loved these color-themed office supply stories – they made me smile big. Beautiful, right?!
