Blog Tip: Tout 15 Second Videos

December 10, 2012

Happy Monday everyone! I’ve decided that once weekly in 2013, I’ll write a post called Blog Tip with one great tip weekly to inspire all of you lovely blogger friends out there! I’m not going to tell you which day though because often a tip lands in my lap and it’s so good that I don’t want to wait until a set weekday to share it. BUT you can expect my Blog Tip column to run once weekly going forward starting with today. But first…. Good morning everyone! How are you?

Blog Tip: Tout 15 Second Videos

I had an exciting weekend with 16 Blogging Your Way Studio students who came to my home to spend the weekend with fellow teacher, Steffi Luxat and I – and needless to say… I’m so pumped up about blogging! It’s amazing how we “pro” bloggers need the budding pro bloggers to fuel us as much as they rely on us to teach them new tricks and fresh ideas about blogging. The relationship is just one big giving circle and I really love that about teaching. I cannot believe that next year will be the fourth year that I’ve been teaching workshops on blogging and creativity and each time I wrap one up I can’t wait to get started on the next online class or in-person event. I’m already gearing up for our March Blogging Your Way e-class AND thinking to do another workshop here at home in the Spring before I go on my book tour. This is truly what I was meant to do and the more I do it, the more I realize I’m right where I need to be.

Okay now for my super cool blog tip. There’s this cool new website that I found today called Tout. It’s really going to take off, I can feel it, and I’ve just uploaded two videos to show you how it works. Tout gives you 15 seconds of video run time to film pieces of your life and share them online. I think this is in incredible way to reach your readers if you are a blogger. You simply download the app, shoot a 15 second video and it uploads in about 60 seconds or less, then you save it to your Tout account. I’ve enabled my account to push my videos to my Facebook and Twitter accounts upon publishing, so I can easily connect with everyone online simply and quickly. I’m sure this could be a bit addictive for some, but I’m going to try to share only valuable and inspirational content using Tout because there is already so much rubbish floating around out there and I don’t want to contribute to more “noise”.

I think if we use Tout with that intention, it could be a really fab way to connect with your friends, family and blog readers. I’m already thinking about some creative ways to begin using it, what do you think, do you like the idea of sharing 15 second videos and if so, how do you imagine using it or what would you show?

Loads of love to you all today – I’ll be back later on to share some views from our workshop this weekend, I just need to sort through my photos!

    Hi Holy!
It’s been a tough weekend, I am glad to be ‘on blog’ again ;-) Thank you for your tip! Tout looks so interesting. I have to say, I am a little camera shy and I don’t have a good device to film with. But I will definately keep this in mind.
    Have a good week,

Hmmm. I usually don’t watch random amateur vidoes (I never click on youtube links of “funny things” on fb, for example) Like you said: Too much noise out there and very often just a waste of time. I think it could work because of the 15 seconds length (not too much time wasted) and if there is actually a reason why in this special case a video works better than a nicely shot photograph. I think that is the biggest challenge.

Hi Holly – I’m really keen to do the BYW 2.0 class, as I have done the BYW class previously. Hoping to be signed up for the March class! I’m on the emailing list :) xxx

I agree with you on the “too much noise” bit. There is soo much boring and random sh** on the internet.

And to be honest I don´t see the benefit of you unwrapping the plant with the silver bulb in a 15second movie or your filming the wall above the sofa. Both scenes would work just as well if you´d show photos on your beautiful blog. Especially since your photos always look great!

I LOVE YOUR BLOG and I really admire you and your work. So please don´t misinterpret my opinion as destructive criticism!

@Saskia – No offense taken! Those were just practice videos, I’m thinking of other ways to use Tout that would be really cool. The point for me is Quick Bites to share with others. I don’t always want to get out my tripod and spend 30 minutes taking a photo in my studio, then uploading it, cropping/resizing, uploading, writing a blog post etc. For one photo it takes me about an hour total to get it from idea to blog. I am so happy to have stumbled by the Tout site and can’t wait to see what I can do with it!

The blog tips is a great idea and a great addition to you BYW boot camp. I like the idea of Tout, I am just not sure I am going to use it. Besides my full time job, blog, Twitter and FB I don’t have enough time.

I definitely wanted to start doing some vlogs on my blog but not long ones. This Tout would be perfect! I’m going to check it out! I love the idea of blog tips! Every lil bit helps!=)

First off, I’m excited for your new series! As a former BYW student, you know I can’t get enough of your blogging tips. :) As for Tout, I had not heard of it before, but it sounds really genius – especially for people like me…maybe a bit intimidated by creating a lengthy video, but 15 seconds? Even I could handle that! Ha.
    xo Laura

I’ve never heard of silvered bulbs, and I want to know more! Is it silver leaf? Do you still water the bulb the same way? It’s lovely! What a nice husband you have!

  • Reply Eleanor December 11, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Wow, this looks like a fun tool. I avoid video because I think ‘ugh, too much work’ but seems like Tout would change all that. The length also seems perfect. Yesterday I was watching a video someone posted on FB that was only 1:40 mins and I noticed I was getting bored after 20 seconds!

  • Reply Sarah December 11, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Holly! I just to you last BYW class, which was full of wonderful insperation. Another great tip, I can not wait to incorperate idea! Thanks!!!

Great explanation of Tout, and of its potential benefit to bloggers! Also keep in mind that Tout allows you to stream your videos automatically to your blog/website using a “Widget” (similar to a Twitter Feed, but with videos), that can be easily built (free, and by anyone) at Tout[dot]com/widget_builder.
