Gorgeous Design Files + Baby Kisses

Hello everyone! I’ve been totally absorbed in my e-course, Blog Boss, at the moment so I’m sorry if I’m not that active on the blog at the moment. Between teaching, one-on-one blog business consultations via Skype and redecorating some rooms in my home – well I’ve been busy! Plus I take care of my baby full-time and am busy with other work projects too. I have some great things coming up for 2015, including the redesign of decor8 AND a brand new logo.

It’s very exciting to be so busy, especially doing things that fuel me and make life sweeter. My baby boy is really thriving too, which makes me so proud. He is a little over 8 months old and tonight he did something for the first time that was so completely precious that I had tears of joy streaming down my face. I was putting him to bed and I asked him for a kiss. I usually just say “Kiss” or “Kiss mama” and he opens his mouth wide and dives in and plants a wet kiss (mouth open) on my face, somewhere around my mouth. Well tonight it was different. He did that, but then he kept giving me kisses and kisses and more kisses, even moving his little lips trying to make a kissy face… Holding both sides of my face in his little pudgy hands with his bright blue eyes gazing into mine with such joy… And the more he gave me the more he giggled and then I started giggling and we collapsed on the bed in hysterics as he kept kissing me more and more. Tears were streaming down my face because it was this perfect moment when you realize your baby is developing a real personality and is really starting to understand you and your humor and words and wow, it was magic to bond with him like that. I just had to share. He’s so darling.

Aren’t the photos in this post divine? I’ve been pinning like crazy from the new Design Files blog. I’m so impressed by what Lucy has done to revamp her site. Looks gorgeous. She is such an inspirational blogger. I love that it’s so easy now to find all of her beautifully photographed Australian home stories. Whenever I look at pictures of Australia I always think I COULD TOTALLY LIVE THERE. Don’t you?

8 Things I Found This Weekend

There are often so many things that I do or see during the weekend that never make it to my blog or even to Instagram. I often wonder why don’t I share on decor8 as freely as I once did, why do I think everything needs it’s own post and tons of hours devoted to pulling together a review? When I got started as a blogger 9 years ago, I blogged so frequently and my recipe was usually that I’d produce a few big stories each week, a few mid-size ones, and then a bunch of quickies here and there. While everyone else is talking about slow blogging at the moment, I just want to go my own way and blog more frequently and share what I see, but not necessarily make every post one that took me a day to pull together. So in honor of the blogger I once was, who I now want to become again, I’m going to blog daily and just follow my heart. Not every post will be something major, but at least I can use this space to do what I do best – spotlight all of the things that I love and to do it freely and somewhat easily.

Here are 8 lovely things that I found this weekend:

matandmet
1. Me&Mats jewelry. I was sent a beautiful necklace, Mister Grey, as a gift and wore it with my new oversized beige cashmere sweater, a pair of jeans and my new boots with neon indigo blue trim. I felt like a million bucks in this necklace. I truly love it.
anthology

2. A stack of Anthology magazines that I was missing in my collection. Gosh I love this magazine so much.

hoptimist
3. These fun little Hoptimist figures from Concept Room are finally unpacked and ready to put somewhere in my home. They are so sweet and bouncy. One is definitely going into the baby’s room for his shelf (the ones he cannot reach yet!).

studiocalicokit
4. A kit from always inspiring Studio Calico. I love laying out everything and just looking at it. Ahhhh.

quilt

5. My quilt is finished! I’ve been working on this quilt for an embarrassingly long time. I decided to send it out to be quilted after I put it all together and it came back looking gorgeous. I’m so happy because this was a lot of work. Now I want to make more. Thank you Brigitte, you did a gorgeous job!

greatlyshop

6. I’m prepping a “foodie” shoot for the decor8 shop. Here you can see some of the things I’ll soon feature above like the gorgeous serving board is from Arayna Jensen, the print from Colour Moon and these gorgeous linen napkins from Celina Mancurti that are to die for. I’m so proud that I stock handmade products that are made so beautifully.

superfront
7. I started looking through my Superfront catalog, choosing my plan of attack for hacking my IKEA cabinets in my office. I’ll let you know what I decide upon. All I can say is that Superfront rocks.

milkmag
8. Flipping through Milk Decoration magazine, given to me by my friend who just returned from France. I’m so glad this was part of my weekend. So inspiring.

walkinghomewithdaddy

And finally, because I haven’t blogged about him in so long… Here is my little Aidan with his daddy. He turned 8 months old on October 9th. He is such a darling boy. He started crawling at 6 months and is standing too but hasn’t walked on his own yet – we’re thinking he’ll start walking at 10 months. He’s so close!!!

So those are 8 things that I found this weekend. I hope you had a nice weekend and found some good stuff too. – Holly

Happy Family Decorating From Photographer Hans Mossel

I found lots of fun family homes recently in the photography portfolio of Hans Mossel and couldn’t resist sharing some because they represent how lots of us really want to live – a bit cluttered, personal, a little messy, creative and unapologetic. Polished-perfect spaces in all of their gorgeous unattainableness just isn’t cutting it for most of us anymore. At the end of the day you, especially if you have children, you simply want a home that feels like YOU and allows your family to feel supported, cozy and genuinely at home without having to fight with them over keeping it super tidy or free from fingerprints.

And sure, it can be beautifully decorated, no shame in that, but I find casual creative homes have so much more life – so much more appeal – than slick glossy pads with expensive furnishings that lack personality. Maybe that’s a life phase that we go through when we’re single and young, when impressing others is at the top of our list. But as you enter your thirties and beyond, you just want to be comfortable at home. I’ve always said this, on my blog and in my books but now with an 8-month-old who has been crawling for two months and is trying to walk, well, you can imagine that my decorating style is evolving still and I love it. These fun and quirky spaces, I hope, will inspire you just as they did me. These rooms are happy and family-friendly. Enjoy!

I love the photography of Hans Mossel, who is located Groningen, Netherlands and shoots for some of the country’s best publications, like magazine VTWonen where I’ve spotted his work before since I’ve been a subscriber for over 5 years. What I’ve shown you is a mere snippet of his work – for more inspiration visit his vast and beautiful portfolio online right here. You can also follow him on Facebook and Instagram @hansmossel too.

What lovely homes with so many details to absorb and try in your own home. Did you spot anything that you liked? I loved the colors – mint, pinky peach, bold orange, blue – so fun!

Kauniste Textiles + Home Products From Finland

Wow, I’m finding so many cute home labels out of Scandinavia + the Nordic countries lately but this one has real legs, it’s a company I can see doing extremely well not only in Europe but Japan, Australia and beyond. I can see my LA friends really getting into this stuff too. Kauniste is an independent textile company in Helsinki, who work with illustrators and artists to combine fresh patterns with good design using traditional manufacturing techniques. I want every pillow and that fab blanket shown in the first photo!

I love the festive colors and patterns and seriously, I would love to own everything I see. It’s all totally my style. What is also good is that everything is affordable AND you can buy lots of the patterns you see by the meter so you can turn anything into a roman shade, cover a headboard or bench, make a table cloth, etc. for your home. You could even make a pretty A line dress!

I really love what I’m seeing here, don’t you?
