Tour the Hygge Home of Swantje Hinrichsen

Are you ready for another home tour, as part of the new #mydecor8 series? Remember, if you want your home featured on decor8, tag your favorite rooms with #mydecor8 on Instagram so I can see them and maybe you’ll be next here with your own home story and interview. I’d love to welcome you to my blog!

Today is very special because I asked Swantje Hinrichsen (@swantjeundfrieda on Instagram), someone with a lovely style that I adore, to share her home with us. Eeeeee!

Swantje is a freelance graphic designer, illustrator and interior stylist and her good taste certainly shows in her home. It’s cozy, warm, natural, open, soft tones, charming and definitely has a Scandinavian vibe. It’s so HYGGE! Swantje rents her 1920’s brick house in Münster, Germany, which is 145 m2, and lives there with her boyfriend.

When I look at her home, I see so many nice design pieces as well, some that I want to own. It was also nice to see the new Muuto Pebble rug in her living room - I have the same rug from Muuto in my dining room (mine is pale rose and hers is burnt orange) and it’s a big favorite of mine because it feels so good to walk on with socks, like a little foot massage, and it’s so understated but still very much a design element in the room.

In addition to Swantje’s home tour, I’ve ask her a series of questions to learn a bit more about her likes, dislikes and favorite things from music to Instagrammers. Ready to check out her space? Let’s go!

What does home mean to you?

Home is where I can fill up my energy, where I can be myself, where my heart is. Since I am a highly sensitive person, my daily routine and work cost me a lot of energy. It happens really fast that my energy level slows down, especially in the evening. Being at home, surrounded by art, music, my interior space… gives back the energy that I need and recharges my batteries. I always say that my home is my filling station.

How would you describe your style?

Graphic, artsy, crafty with a cozy crisp Skandinavian touch. I love furniture and things with history, especially if it’s a second-hand piece or a has a history of good craftsmanship.

What do you love most about your home?

The old floor and the stairway (see above photo).

What would you like to change at home?

As much as I love the open floor plan on our first floor, I sometimes would like to have doors in our big kitchen-dining-livingroom area to have more of a cozy feeling in each room. Also, I’m not the biggest „Möbelrücker“ (someone who moves furniture around); when I’ve found a place for the furniture or a furniture for a place, it stays where it is. So in this way, there is nothing I would change concerning the furniture arrangement. But I love to change wall colors because this is an easy way to achieve a whole new atmosphere, especially when you paint all of the walls in a room - and I like to paint drawers and heater in the same color as the wall as well.

Favorite thing to do at home?

Just be. In the moment. Relaxed. Aware. Happy.

Your dream piece for the home?

The Spanish Chair by Fredericia Furniture.

What is important to you when you visit someone else’s home?

To feel comfortable.

When you have people over, how does that usually play out?

I keep it casual. Mostly we cook, just sit together and talk all night long.

Favorite meal to cook?

It’s mostly my boyfriend who cooks at home, but when I do, I love to make all kind of bowls. (Editor’s note: Bowls in Germany are a big trend at the moment, for breakfast they can be with yogurt, fresh fresh, nuts, seeds and for lunch or dinner, with a base of rice for instance and then toppings like veggies, tofu, chicken, etc. Generally, they are arranged in a very artful way, which makes them different from a normal bowl of yogurt with toppings or a stir fry).
