Elli Popp For The Home

March 6, 2014

My friend visited yesterday from London to see our new baby, Katja Behre, who is also the founder/designer of the Elli Popp collection. If you frequent the fairs, like the M&O in Paris, you may have come across her work. Her latest collection includes silk scarves, a gorgeous kimono, 3D wallpapers and quirky bone china with fingerprints for the tabletop. She brought along some wallpaper samples and images so I will show you a few below…

Her work would fit so beautifully in ABC Carpet & Home, Liberty, Selfridges and of course, Anthropologie so my fingers are crossed that her line will get picked up by a one of these retailers… Though she already has had so much success with her line that anything at this point would just be a wonderful bonus for her brand.

Psst: If you live in Europe, some of her wallpapers are available online here.

The Very Dear Sania Pell

April 12, 2013

Hello friends, how are you doing today? I’d like to share my love once again for all things Sania Pell. Sania Pell is an interiors stylist and best-selling author of two books, Homemade Home and The Homemade Home for Children (I have and love them both), and lives and works in London as a freelance stylist for magazines and catalogs. She has a super lovely home in Chiswick and a beautiful family with a great designer/photographer husband, Mark Wilson, who actually redesigned decor8 for me once and did a beautiful job. Sania is such an inspiration to me. I really adore her style and how she looks at the world. I also like how take charge she is. She makes stuff happen and doesn’t sit idle. I love that about her.

Ever since first having dinner with her in Camden Town in 2010, I knew she’d be my friend. She showed up at my hotel with a gift she had handmade for me – a project from her first book – a beautiful wall hanging that she presented rolled up in a tube. I was so overwhelmed by such a generous act of kindness. It’s on my wall to this day and every time I see it, I think of our first meeting and how lucky I am to have met Sania in person. I couldn’t believe she was a fan of my blog and that she even read the review I posted about her first book so much that she wanted to meet me to thank me personally. No one does stuff like that anymore, really. She is super special.

Since that day, we’ve been friends – something I value immensely. We’ve done many nice things together ever since in-person, including her wonderful help in planning my book party at Liberty in 2011. I can’t believe it’s already been so long already, time flies! She’s let us shoot in her home on two occasions, so when her living room ended up on the cover of my first book, Decorate, I couldn’t believe Chronicle Books had chosen the room of my dear friend Sania! To have her home on my book cover is such a big deal to me. Whenever I look at Decorate on my coffee table, I don’t just see my book but I think about her.

Sania is so talented and giving through her blog. I love that she has e a blog and that I can keep up with her there because honestly, when I am feeling a little homesick or a bit uninspired, I have these plug-in points for inspiration and her blog is high on my list. I visit nearly every day to see if she has posted. From her posts about travel to shops she’s been to, shoots she’s done on location, her book projects, pictures she takes of landscapes that I love so much (because they remind me of a gorgeous painting she did in her bedroom)… Whenever I visit her blog, I feel like I’m at her home and I recall the times I’ve spent with Sania in her craft loft or kitchen and feel really cozy and happy.

Thank you Sania, you are a beautiful friend that I admire so much. I imagine being grannies looking back at this “blog” era saying to one another, “Well wasn’t that something else.” I am so glad your first book, which resulted in my blog review, which caused us to have dinner one summer’s night in London, turned us into friends. Thank goodness for blogs and books but even more, thank you for reaching out to me in the first place because London wouldn’t be the same without you there. In fact, whenever I go to London, I’m always excited because I know we’ll meet up and be total girls together and I love that so much. You’re the best.

Coming Soon: Kate Spade Saturday

January 28, 2013

I’ve heard a faint buzz over the past few months that Kate Spade will soon launch a new lifestyle brand called Kate Spade Saturday – have you heard this too? Then recently the rumors were confirmed in Elle magazine and it’s true –Ohhhh, exciting!

Coming Soon: Kate Spade Saturday

According to Elle, “Kate Spade is bringing a bit of weekend fun to your wardrobe and home decor with its new lifestyle brand, Kate Spade Saturday. The line will first debut in Tokyo in February and then in the U.S. for Spring 2013.” This looks like Kate’s hip little sister, doesn’t it? Very fresh and energetic and BRIGHT! I’ve read in other spots around the web that the line will priced a bit lower, too. Sounds good to me.

Coming Soon: Kate Spade Saturday

In addition to fashion, they’re also planning a home and tabletop collection. I’m really looking forward to seeing it. From the photos I’ve seen online, the collection is very bold, graphic and mostly primary colors like yellow, red and blue but also tons of monochromatic love mixing crisp white with bold black.

I can’t wait to find out more about this collection and to finally SEE with my own eyes what all the fuss is about… What do you think based on what you’ve seen and heard so far?

Speaking of Kate Spade, have you seen the shoes for Keds they are doing? Super cute and available in February. Also, do you own a copy of their new book, “Things We Love“? It just arrived from Amazon today, I’m in love with it! Check out my Instagram stream to see picks from inside.

Gretchen Jones & Her Cool Apartment

November 14, 2012

Make it work! Are you a Project Runway fan? Who isn’t, right? Okay so maybe you know by now that the winner from last season was fashion designer Gretchen Jones (also a blogger!). Her rocker chic bohemian-ness is so cool I think but it goes wayyyy beyond her fashion sense – this lady lives how she feels and dresses – effortless style is just her way of life. I love her Brooklyn apartment, there is a massive spread on Refinery 29 today all about it with 24 photos so this is only a peeky peek. Her moody blue-gray walls make her artwork really stand out. I also like how she uses some of her canvas pieces as mini-ledges to display collected elements.

All of the art and pattern in her apartment is quite cool – very eclectic and anything goes. To see more photos, including her closet and bedroom, click here. These gorgeous photos were shot by Maia Harms.

Mit Essen spielt man

September 12, 2012

It’s so interesting to see what people are doing in the world of food photography, cooking events and food packaging. This whole world of food is something that I love to follow because it ties in closely to what I do and I find a ton of crossover between styling interiors and styling food. So many things that work for interiors also work for food and vice versa. Do you find this too?

Mit Essen spielt man

I learned this first hand when I was lecturing at a Food Styling & Photography class this past summer in Weimar, Germany. I was able to apply my knowledge of interiors to food styling and the students definitely enjoyed my take as my personal experiences and overall perspective felt very fresh to them. Like anything, if you are only getting advice from peers, you can quickly dry up or become bored. You may begin to notice too much repetition or “inspired” work and after awhile this can be very draining and frustrating. Everyone tries to be different in the exact same way! This is precisely why I like to learn from those in other creative professions in addition to my own because then your mind stays open and your ideas are always being challenged and therefore, freshened. Do you feel the same way?

Mit Essen spielt man

I would like to share something with you today that I fell upon while doing some random Googling and was surprised to learn that this fascinating company called Mit Essen spielt man (this is German and means Play With Food) belongs to a creative lady from Hannover, Germany who lives in a nearby district called Linden. I also live in Hannover (in the List) and love finding other creatives who live here and share my passions – it is very exciting! The talented lady behind Mit Essen spielt man is Lina Meyer who runs a small design and cooking studio out of a small building behind her apartment and enjoys, through her concepts and workshops, teaching others to really taste food when they are eating – to pull it apart and have fun, to be in the moment and to savor it.

Mit Essen spielt man

Lina says, “Food is a very exciting process, it is a very sensual and intimate experience. What we eat has a cultural value for us, supporting us in our identity and our way of life, tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are.” Wonderful!

I love her recent Playing With Food dinner party that she had out of her studio space in Hannover – I hope she’ll have another because I would love to attend!

This is such an inspiration to see. Wow!

Colorful Burnham Design

May 22, 2012

One of my favorite American interior designers is Betsy Burnham. I’m consistently lured in by her unique work and how personal her touch is – it is so very Betsy. I loved watching a video recently showing her in action (see below) as she dressed a window at a shop in LA called Fuller + Roberts for the most recent Legends of La Cienega event. When I taught a moodboard workshop at Anthropologie in LA last summer, Betsy joined me to share her tips and tricks and was a real crowd pleaser and I was honored big time, a memory I’ll cherish for years!
