Corbin Gurkin Photography

February 14, 2012

Hello everyone, how are you? I took Monday off from blogging to catch up on administrative tasks (oh so fun! not!) but the good news is that I’m on top of things in the office and feel loads better and more inspired to write again! I find writer’s block strikes when I have mountains of emails to reply to, tax stuff to sort out, expense reports to complete and calls to make – then it’s impossible to write with a mind heavy with tasks. I feel free again with my To Do lists in good form so let’s kick off the week by enjoying some beautiful photography by Corbin Gurkin, a super amazing wedding photographer based in Charleston, South Carolina.

I thought since weddings are not the focus of this blog that I’d highlight more of her lifestyle shots – particularly those that focus on texture, detail and color because in decorating, all three are key elements in making a space feel cozy and special.

What I love about Corbin’s work, in addition to her fantastic attention to detail, is how she works with light and her notice and capture of moments that some would have overlooked otherwise. I also appreciate how diverse her portfolio is – it’s a lot of work to be a destination wedding photographer! She is available for hire to shoot all over the world and she definitely has shot everywhere from Tuscany to Paris, London, California and Hawaii.

With work regularly praised by top wedding blogs and featured in top publications like Martha Stewart Weddings, The Knot, and Brides magazine, it’s no wonder why she is a sought-after photographer. To top it off, she was named one of the top twenty destination wedding photographers for 2011 by Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine. You can learn more about this talented lady here. Wonderful work, Corbin! Your work really kick- started a new week for me!

February 7, 2012

I’m so thrilled to introduce you to a new columnist on decor8! French stylist and author Emilie Griottes is such an inspiration to me and now, she’ll bring beauty and great ideas once a month through her new column on decor8 (we don’t have a name for it yet, but when we met in Paris soon I’ll let you know what we’ve come up with!) beginning in March which will share food styling ideas, crafty inspiration and pretty things that will make your spine tingle!

Emilie is someone I found accidentally online last year and then was surprised to realize only recently that I owned some of her books! She will post on decor8 once a month beginning March 21 (my birthday!) so you will be in for a once-a-month treat from lovely Emilie from France. Here is a glimpse of her gorgeous work.

You can see more of Emilie’s work on her glorious blog. She is a top notch stylist and my favorite food blogger so I’m thrilled she is joining me on decor8. In fact, I’m just so happy she has joined the decor8 team which is just me and Leslie Shewring right now but I’m looking for a few more amazing people to write here once a month so we’ll see if I have more contributors down the road – only time will tell! But for now, I have Leslie and Emilie and that makes me just so honored, I really appreciate being surrounded by talented people and want to thank Emilie for accepting my offer to work for me here.

Welcome Emilie! xo

Stylist Jenni Juurinen

January 24, 2012

I really like the work of stylist Jenni Juurinen in Finland and find these two photos from her portfolio quite lovely, particularly the spoons dipped in neutral color paints and the gorgeous wallpaper…

I found Jenni via Emmas inspirational pinboard…  Don’t you just love Emma’s eye? I do. She really curates such lovely pins and her love of white, clean spaces makes her a kindred spirit of mine for sure! Here are a few more from Jenni’s portfolio – I think the pendant lights with the wooden beads are amazing and wonder who makes them. Such a clever idea! I’m also crazy about charcoal gray walls at the moment so these rooms make me happy…

And speaking of Finland, did you know that my book is now available in Finnish?! I know, right? Serious! I’m so excited to think of it being in Finnish book shops. Quite cool! It is called, “”Sisusta tyylillä – 1000 inspiroivaa sisustusideaa kodin jokaiseen huoneeseen” and is available for purchase here.

Does anyone know the name/manufacturer of the wallpaper shown above in the second image?

Emmadime Knitted Lookbook + Video

January 19, 2012

It’s impossible not to be inspired by fashion as it so often influences what goes on in world of decorating. I found a very sweet lookbook for Emmadime Knitted from talented blogger, knitter and graphic designer Emma while browsing around today. Care to take a little peek?

Emmadime Knitted Lookbook + Video

I really like these photographs that Matthew Moore took, don’t you? (UPDATE 1/24: Emma Robertson wrote today to tell me these photos are from Shaun Menary not Matthew Moore. My apologies.) The mood is very sweet and all lovely dovey like. :) Emma Robertson is from Dallas and in addition to her many projects, she pulled together a sweet video that made me smile…

I find the process from the giggling to the planning, making, producing, all of it … Well, it’s really the best part of work sometimes don’t you think?

German Stylist Dietlind Wolf

January 9, 2012

I am so excited to share one of my very favorite stylists with you today… Her name is Dietlind Wolf and she lives in Hamburg, Germany and works as a props stylist and maker of pretty porcelain things to adorn yourself with (like these).

Her collections and arrangements are simply stunning, fresh and very forward. Dietlind possesses an amazing eye and you can sense her connection to the things that she uses to compose a visual story because everything from the materials used to the composition and overall vibe seems so deeply personal. I am smitten by her food styling and consider myself a very big fan and feel she is one of Germany’s greatest talents. Here are some breathtaking views from her portfolio — pay close attention to the details…

Dietlind does a lot of work for Brigitte, Essen und Trinken and Living At Home magazines, some of Germany’s top lifestyle, food and home publications, which is how I first discovered this talented lady. I would LOVE to see her style a cookbook, she could do such an amazing job especially if she were given loads of creative freedom. I’d love to work with Dietlind someday, even just to observe her, it is women like her who inspire me so, so much… They are not copycats but trendsetters. I love and admire this SO MUCH.

Psst: Isn’t her jewelry lovely?

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

January 2, 2012

Hello everyone and happy 2012! I’m still on vacation until NEXT Monday but I’m popping in to give you a big group hug and say hello because I miss ya. And hello but I can’t believe I just wrote that title, House Doctor SPRING/SUMMER 2012. Really? Honestly? Spring? Summer? I can’t even believe that in just three months we’ll start seeing the first signs green grass and daffodils but first we have the gray winter to get through…

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

Thoughts of Spring excite me! I must admit though that I do love winter more and more with each passing year because I find so much inspiration where I’m living here vs. when I lived in New Hampshire cooped up in a little house in the middle of nowhere buried under blankets of snow. Here the winters are less harsh, we haven’t had snow yet for instance, and it’s been around 50 each day so I can’t complain! Living in a city is much more fun for me and helps me get through winters, I love it. If I’m bored of uninspired, I go to a museum or pop into a pretty store around the corner or grab a coffee at my favorite cafe and that is my positivity boost. I find that I must have these re-charge plug-in points, especially in the winter or I’ll get a bit of the blues and I do all I can to avoid that!!! But oh yes, Spring is near, sorta! And with a new season comes new collections like the gorgeous things you will see in this post showcasing the new collection from House Doctor. Yeah! The Doctor is in. Woot!

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

Like I was saying…Danish home brand, House Doctor, is a favorite of mine (as you well know as I have been writing about them for ages) but the cool thing is my good friend Tinna from Agentur Pedersen is their sole rep in Germany, Austria and Switzerland so the second she gets their latest catalogs and can share them, I am usually tipped off and get to see them first which is always fun. She has a showroom a block from my house so I can see lots of their things up close and personal too. AND since their catalog just went live on their site, I can finally show you what they are up to for the coming months. I think this stuff will be right up your stylish little alley.

Let’s pretend that B on the table is for Becker. Or maybe it stands for Badass as in, this is on Badass rustic table. And oh my I hope I didn’t offend you with my language but that is one of my favorite words at the moment. (blush).

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

I particularly adore some of their new lighting, rugs, bedding and furniture. I have a small wish list… I really want the quilt shown above — a must have for my bed that is stunning. It reminds me of a Liberty print that I love so, so, SO much.

What does that M stand for? Mighty? Mega? Manly Man? Meet Me? My My My?

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

A crazy yet pretty green that totally grows on you the more you look at it! It looks so pretty with tones of blue but also violets, too.

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

This blue cabinet shown above is definitely on my wish list for bedroom. It’s the best color blue but even better is the black inside and those gorgeous magazine holders. I love the contrast of soft blue with strong black.

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

I have that wire light in my office with a hot pink cable and I also have that cute white emergency kit with the Liberty-esque patterned cross on top. I’ve been shopping for House Doctor things for years, even before I moved to Germany because when I used to visit here on vacation I’d always bring home House Doctor stuff with me for my New Hampshire home. The love affair has been going on for awhile…

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

The chair is GREAT, right? I also like that pile of books tied together with twine. I always find myself sucked in by the quirky bits in a space.

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

Using black tape to stick images to the wall is a growing trend, washi tape in lighter tones or in neon pink is another. We love our tape, don’t we?

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

I never ever tire of bell jars, do you? There is an H S in this photo. Maybe the H is for Holly or Hello? Or the H S means Hello Sunshine or Happy Shopping?

House Doctor Spring/Summer 2012

You can rarely go wrong with fresh field flowers plucked and displayed in simple glassware and vases, can you? P.S. Isn’t the natural light in this photo goooooooorgeous?

See any dream items? I see TOO MANY! It’s fun to watch House Doctor surprise and inspire us with more fantastic products but for those of you who cannot order from them, I imagine that you feel a bit left out. Well, don’t. You can easily find similar things in your part of the world, I’m sure. You may have to comb around a bit, but you can. Try to see what it is that you like and hunt around for something similar. You’d be surprised what you can find from stores like Pier One, Homegoods, West Elm and Cost Plus World Market. You may be able to pull together a House Doctor look of your own! For those of us who can purchase House Doctor products, do you see anything that sparks your interest? Lighting? A table? A rug? I’m really hooked on that blue Asian-inspired high gloss cabinet and that gorgeous quilt…
