10 Stylish Wallpapers For Teens

March 23, 2017

Let’s talk about pre-teen and teen room decorating for a moment because so many girls are out there who love to decorate their rooms but aren’t sure how to begin. I was once a teen obsessed with decorating my bedroom and today I meet lots of girls between 11-17 who ask me for tips and help with their rooms because they tag along with their mom to my book launch parties because they are curious. It’s the cutest thing that I’ve observed over the past year – more teens coming to my launch parties because they’re interested in decorating. No wonder Anthropologie is pulling back from the clothing space and moving more into the decorating world because the big trend in western society is definitely ALL ABOUT THE HOME right now. Fashion will always be important, but the home needs to look good too, right?

10 Stylish Wallpapers For Teens

Even in Germany, a country where fashion was always first and few really cared about their home decor in comparison to Americans or Danes – it’s becoming very important in German society to have a very well-decorated home with all the latest pieces from trendy ceramic pieces to a great sofa. In fact, many Scandinavian brands are moving into Germany now which is having a huge influence on the market here and overall decor style. Creating a home that you love is where it’s at! Most of us start so young too. I was decorating before I was 10, in fact I remember having huge ideas for my room when I was 6. My opinions were so strong that my parents let me pick out my own bedroom furniture and didn’t force their ideas – what I wanted was what I got and fortunately for them, even at the ripe old age of 6 (!) I had good taste. :)

Let’s talk about teens and decorating. One thing I always tell young girls is to paint or wallpaper and go a little crazy if it fits their personality or to go glam or trendy if they prefer that route. Teenage girls love trends and glamour, they want to be grown up in one sense but totally girly in another.

I believe it’s one of those spaces where you can go bonkers because you are young and free. Do it. Plus, it’s a blank canvas and you are the artist so experiment and play. In fact, your bedroom as a teenager is the best canvas because in that space, you can learn what you like from color and texture to overall style. Though it will evolve over the years, it’s a great way to get started and to decorate.

To inspire you a little, let’s look at some patterned wallpaper from Esta Home. They make HUNDREDS of creative, quirky and colorful patterns that I think work great in teenage sleep spaces and even dorm rooms. Here are my 10 picks, some even a mom may want to put out in the dining or living room space (like my favorite – the white faux brick).

10 Favorite Rug Sources That I Love

August 11, 2016

I love throw rugs, in fact I have 11 currently but about 10 more in storage. Yeah, it’s a little problem, sort of like my chair fetish and problem with indulging in ribbons and paper products and ceramics. Most decor enthusiasts and stylists and decorators and okay, designers and anyone else who is working in a field that involves the home, develops obsessions / fixations on specific things. What is yours?

10 Favorite Rug Sources That I Love

I grew up with wall-to-wall carpet in every home I’d ever lived in until I was 16. Wood floors only arrived to my living space when my parents moved to Boston, to the Swampscott/Marblehead border, and our beachfront home had wooden floors and it was just surreal to me, at sweet 16, to walk on wooden floors. It felt naked, empty, unfinished. I instantly purchased throw rugs for comfort and texture. So many years later, though I love wood, concrete, tile and anything but wall-to-wall carpet, I still prefer the feeling of a soft rug beneath my feet.

Aside from obvious comfort, I also love how they ground the room and in larger rooms, help to define spaces. For instance, a living/dining room combo in a loft can become two rooms without the expense of addition of walls – just add a large area rug beneath your dining table and chairs and a second rug beneath your sofa and seating area to define each “room”. Rugs are really good like that.

If you have wall-to-wall carpet, lots of people still insist on throw rugs to add another layer of comfort but even more, to bring in color and pattern. Some renters have wall-to-wall and don’t like it so by adding an area rug they are able to inject some color and a more personal touch to their rental home.

Where do I buy rugs? I’ll list my most recent suppliers below, my current top 10. Some are in Germany or Denmark but most are available and/or based in the USA. I also have a new source that I’m loving that I found while perusing Pinterest this morning, an interiors brand called Caitlin Wilson Design. LOVE. I really want one of CWD’s rugs now and am trying to figure out which one and how I’m going to make this happen. I’ve sprinkled this post with great rugs from their website – fantastic patterns, right!?

10 Favorite Rug Sources That I Love

Okay so here are my 10 Great Rug Sources at the moment.
1 / Lulu & Georgia – Modern, feminine, eclectic, they have it all.
2 / Dash & Albert – More traditional, very well made.
3 / Impressionen – They stock many brands from all over Europe, not a lot of rugs in their catalog but what they do carry are really good
4 / ABC Carpet + Home – I love buying and/or drooling at their carpets. When in NYC, I always visit their store to see what’s new. They always stock the freshest finds.
5 / House Doctor – Danish firm with nice rugs that are geometric, hand woven, and very affordable.
6 / Armadillo – Australian firm that has dealers in Europe and now, an American showroom. I love their rugs, I have 3 and find them just wonderful and so natural.
7 / HK Living – They have lots of rugs from Morocco that are quite colorful and fun.
8 / West Elm – More trend-driven rugs, very nice, great quality, love this resource for not only price but selection.
9 / Pink Rug Co – I love this Etsy dealer who lives in Morocco and has the best vintage rugs ever. Affordable too and she ships globally.
10 / and… Caitlin Wilson Design – Fun colors and patterns, glamorous, girly and preppy.

I also have a little bonus for you today. Have you ever wondered about rug sizing and placement by room? Caitlin Wilson Design has a very informative post on their blog about this with illustrations for living, dining and bedroom. Here’s the link.

12 Dorm Room + Small Space Decorating Finds

August 8, 2016

If this post had a hashtag, it would be #dormgoals or #smallspacegoals because this is exactly how I see it – imagine going back to school and decorating your dorm or apartment with these 12 beautiful things!? And a big BY THE WAY…. I clearly remember the good old days of blogging when you’d post something like, “10 things I love from Urban Outfitters” and it wasn’t sponsored nor did UO give you a single product in exchange for the post. I miss those days because everything on blogs, and now even Instagram, is sponsored and it sort of makes me think that people don’t really blog anymore unless there is some kind of cash incentive in it or something where they can get a kick back.

Well, in honor of the good old days, this post (like most all of my posts) is not sponsored and I get nothing from it except that I hope you will pin stuff and share it and maybe you will like my finds. 8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

November 5, 2014

I really enjoyed the first installation of 8 Things I Found This Past Weekend so I decided to do another and maybe I’ll continue with these because I love sharing bits of the precious, unique, interesting and/or simply cool stuff that I discover. Plus, I love to shop for myself, my family and friends which means I come across a lot of good stuff in my pursuit of cute. Here are 8 things that made me smile, I hope they do the same for you.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
1. iPAD SLEEVE. Finally! I found the perfect soft gold leather sleeve for my iPad and a big bonus, it has an interiors scene on the inside. I purchased it at Raumformplan in Hannover, it’s a Dutch brand called Keecie. I’ve also ordered this in minty dusty green from the Keecie web shop today to pop in my handbag to hold my iPhone 6 Plus – it’s the perfect size.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
2. GIFT BAGS + TAGS. I bought these from Ferm Living for gift giving – a nice change from the typical gift bags with ribbon handles. I love the geometric tags and stickers too.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
3. COOKBOOK. Karen Mordechai, whom I’ve met in person several times (she is as lovely as you’d expect!) wrote her debut book, Sunday Suppers, named after the supper club she started that sells out each time she throws one in her super bombastic Brooklyn studio. This woman is a dynamo. This cookbook is gorgeous. A big thanks to her literary agent for passing a copy along to me.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

4. NESTING DOLLS. I picked up these plastic animal nesting dolls at a favorite local shop called Goldfisch in Hannover (Linden). They are from a Swedish brand called OMM Design.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

5. CARDS. I found these cards at another great shop in Hannover (Linden) called Gunilla. I love that 3 out of 4 of them have stuff that you can remove and use. They are by Petra Boase in the UK.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
6. MINI SUITCASE. I just had to have this little hedgehog suitcase for Aidan’s room. We have these critters running around outside, you’ll find them in gardens and in the forest behind my house, and I just adore them. This was also from the Hannover shop, Goldfisch, but the label inside traces its origins to the Dot Com Gift Shop.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

7. BABY BOOTS. After spending way too much money on handmade leather shoes for my crawling baby boy, I decided that it was just plan frivolous spending to spend so much money on shoes for a child that doesn’t even walk. Since we still take him to the sandbox in the playground, and for long stroller rides each day, his little feet still need protecting from the elements. I found these beige boots at our local H&M and fell in love with not only the low price but how adorbable they look on his tiny legs with his leggings tucked into them. It is way more fun than I imagined to dress a little boy.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

8. WALLPAPER. This golden pineapple wallpaper, Pina Sola, by Aimee Wilder is being installed in my entryway AS I TYPE THIS. I can’t WAIT to show you guys the before and after. You can follow the progress on my Instagram account @decor8. My current entry way does not say WELCOME, it says GO AWAY. That had to change. Why not use an emblem of hospitality, and something that connects me to my southern heritage – the pineapple?

Hope you enjoyed my finds! Spot anything you love?

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

October 20, 2014

There are often so many things that I do or see during the weekend that never make it to my blog or even to Instagram. I often wonder why don’t I share on decor8 as freely as I once did, why do I think everything needs it’s own post and tons of hours devoted to pulling together a review? When I got started as a blogger 9 years ago, I blogged so frequently and my recipe was usually that I’d produce a few big stories each week, a few mid-size ones, and then a bunch of quickies here and there. While everyone else is talking about slow blogging at the moment, I just want to go my own way and blog more frequently and share what I see, but not necessarily make every post one that took me a day to pull together. So in honor of the blogger I once was, who I now want to become again, I’m going to blog daily and just follow my heart. Not every post will be something major, but at least I can use this space to do what I do best – spotlight all of the things that I love and to do it freely and somewhat easily.

Here are 8 lovely things that I found this weekend:

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
1. Me&Mats jewelry. I was sent a beautiful necklace, Mister Grey, as a gift and wore it with my new oversized beige cashmere sweater, a pair of jeans and my new boots with neon indigo blue trim. I felt like a million bucks in this necklace. I truly love it.
8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

2. A stack of Anthology magazines that I was missing in my collection. Gosh I love this magazine so much.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
3. These fun little Hoptimist figures from Concept Room are finally unpacked and ready to put somewhere in my home. They are so sweet and bouncy. One is definitely going into the baby’s room for his shelf (the ones he cannot reach yet!).

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
4. A kit from always inspiring Studio Calico. I love laying out everything and just looking at it. Ahhhh.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

5. My quilt is finished! I’ve been working on this quilt for an embarrassingly long time. I decided to send it out to be quilted after I put it all together and it came back looking gorgeous. I’m so happy because this was a lot of work. Now I want to make more. Thank you Brigitte, you did a gorgeous job!

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

6. I’m prepping a “foodie” shoot for the decor8 shop. Here you can see some of the things I’ll soon feature above like the gorgeous serving board is from Arayna Jensen, the print from Colour Moon and these gorgeous linen napkins from Celina Mancurti that are to die for. I’m so proud that I stock handmade products that are made so beautifully.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
7. I started looking through my Superfront catalog, choosing my plan of attack for hacking my IKEA cabinets in my office. I’ll let you know what I decide upon. All I can say is that Superfront rocks.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend
8. Flipping through Milk Decoration magazine, given to me by my friend who just returned from France. I’m so glad this was part of my weekend. So inspiring.

8 Things I Found This Past Weekend

And finally, because I haven’t blogged about him in so long… Here is my little Aidan with his daddy. He turned 8 months old on October 9th. He is such a darling boy. He started crawling at 6 months and is standing too but hasn’t walked on his own yet – we’re thinking he’ll start walking at 10 months. He’s so close!!!

So those are 8 things that I found this weekend. I hope you had a nice weekend and found some good stuff too. – Holly
