Evoke Mio by Orla Kiely

October 13, 2010

I already have a lovely radio in my kitchen but after seeing the brand new Evoke Mio radio designed my Orla Kiely my heart started to race. Isn’t this lovely!? I still will stick with mine but this is great.

The digital and FM portable radio features the signature stem print that she is known best for and is finished with a chromed handle and walnut veneered cabinet with cream. The radio has an optional ChargePAK that gives you up to 24 hours to listen to music between charges. “It is packed with features too, including digital and FM radio, an input for your iPod/MP3 player, Intellitext and textSCAN, a striking auto-dimming OLED display, an alarm, a kitchen timer and a USB connector for future product upgrades.”

The EVOKE Mio by Orla Kiely will be available exclusively at John Lewis from early November and at independent retailers from March 2011 — I think you can get it at her Covent Garden store soon too.

Lovely!

Papa Stour + Stylist Rosie Brown

October 4, 2010

I really love online shop Papa Stour based in Scotland because everything looks so warm and cozy — what home should be, Gemütlichkeit. I’ve talked about this sweet spot on the web before but do you know much about the owner, stylist Rosie Brown?

Papa Stour + Stylist Rosie Brown

I went exploring on her site this morning and found out that she now has a charming vacation home for rent in Scotland available through Wilderness Cottages, it is located in the North West Highlands of Scotland 8 miles from Applecross with fabulous views over to Skye, Raasay and Rona. Look at these views of it sent to me by Rosie’s office this morning (thanks, Sally!)… This blue bedroom is divine.

Doesn’t this look like the perfect getaway? I’m longing to to go to Scotland and so is my husband so perhaps next year we will stay in Rosie’s postcard-like home. I love the idea of being tucked away in a secluded natural spot with only a few small local pubs or grocers and nothing else… It reminds me of Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire and all of the times that I spent in the mountains or countryside there with little around me, those times were always so relaxing and I would return home feeling quite refreshed.

Over the past several years, I’ve been spending vacations in cities which, honestly, never feel like a real vacation in the sense that there is little to no relaxation involved. It’s just rush, rush, rush from one big attraction to the next. Maybe I need to mix things up. A few city vacations and few near the shore or nestled away in the woods…. but it can’t always be about the hustle bustle (but gosh I love it so!).

Ha! And this is the same girl who is going to teach in Marrakesh this month (though this will be relaxing for the students because they’ll be doing a spa day, eating some amazing meals, dining rooftop, enjoying morning yoga — the works!) and who is flying to Istanbul in November with my friend Esra and then going to Paris in January to meet up with Nichole and Evan. I think the NEXT adventure after that needs to be either to the shore or to the countryside for a long weekend. Then again, my home is my haven and I get plenty of rest and joy at home so perhaps this is why I always select cities for travel destinations… But still, a weekend in Scotland in the middle of nowhere at Rosie’s cottage – sign me up!

Rosie Brown, who is not only a shop owner but a talented Scottish designer and stylist, has a lovely online portfolio for browsing too – lots of her work has appeared in Livingetc magazine so you may recognize some of the tears above. It really puts one in the Autumn mood.

Manolo Blahnik for Liberty

September 21, 2010

I love the Manolo Blahnik for Liberty accessories collection — it’s a shoe lovers dream, is it not? My favorite from this collection is the Bouton de Rose candle. Check out these beauties…

Manolo Blahnik for Liberty

Fabric, umbrellas, paper products, candles, pillows… ah, yes. Sadly, they do not ship outside of the UK. Boo hoo! I really wanted that candle for my new house but I guess I’ll just have to dream…

This collection will be around for three months so if you are in London anytime soon, stop by Liberty to check it out in person.

12 West Elm Faves + Boston Event!

September 16, 2010

A couple of readers asked if I’d point them to some of my favorite things over at West Elm so I’m going to play a game of virtual shopping guide! Fun! In this post I’ve taken 12 of my current favorites from West Elm to share with not only those readers but with the rest of you who may also be looking for a few news things to spruce your roost. Enjoy!

12 West Elm Faves + Boston Event!

1. Diamond tufted headboard, 2. Nailhead upholstered headboard, 3. Blake sofa, 4. Tripod table in white, 5. Martini side table in white or silver and 6. the Wrap dining chairs (love all colors!).

12 West Elm Faves + Boston Event!

7. The Pratt desk in all white (also available in two tone) has to be my current favorite West Elm piece. 8. I also like the Pebble Stripe rug. In fact, the whole room is nice… especially that coffee table. 8. The Sphere lamps are great, too. 10. Could this Chunky tassel throw get any yummier? 11. This simple Cloche is nice to display something that you cherish. 12. And finally, the Organic Shaped dinnerware. Everyone needs at least one white set of dinnerware because white shows off food the best (I am throwing out my blue dinnerware, it makes most food look so unappetizing!) and with white, you can lay the table anyway you’d like — dress it up, go casual, change your colors, experiment with a variety of themes — anything and everything goes with white dinnerware.

12 West Elm Faves + Boston Event!

BOSTON: West Elm has partnered with PATCH NYC and Etsy to invite some of Boston’s most talented artisans and crafters in to our store for a special pop-up hand made art market event on October 14th.  If you can attend, go, go, go! It sounds fun. You can RSVP here. I’ll be there in spirit. xo

DAY Birger et Mikkelsen Home

September 16, 2010

This is such a gorgeous autumn color palette! DAY Birger et Mikkelsen is a Danish label known for their amazing fashion but did you know that they also have a well-curated collection of goods for the home? Their current campaign is called Quirky Autumn and I just love it with the smokey shades of blue, gray…. vintage charm, extremely tactile, a few classic designs from the 60s, some ethnic “raw” pieces made of wood, silhouette art work, embroidery, lots of handmade charm — we all are so drawn to these things because they feel so real and in some ways connect us back to our childhood…

This is definitely a look/palette that many designers are gravitating towards right now — Sibella Court, TineK Home, House Doctor, DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, West Elm, Anthropologie, etc. The mix of high and low, old and new is currently popular but I believe that it has real staying power — like denim jeans — in the sense that you can see a living room in these colors, in this style, in 5 years and it would still be just as lovely and cozy and not at all appear dated or, “Sooooo 2010” as I imagine some current trends will look and feel years from now. Like denim, this look is clean, natural, casual and lasting since it is a mix of periods, cultures, and mostly neutral tones which you really can never go wrong with.

What do you think of these colors, textures and combinations?
