Factory 20: Vintage Heaven!

August 17, 2010

Hello everyone! How are you today? I was just reading the House Doctor blog and found this great store based out of Virginia called Factory 20 that I must share with you. It’s my new obsession and I wish it were nearby because I’d go a little bonkers shopping there. I noticed though that they schedule deliveries to NYC every so often, but it’s still a little far for me here in Germany! Ha!

Factory 20: Vintage Heaven!

(I must have this tressel table for a mini cocktail bar. Imagine it with lovely etched vintage glasses, mismatched, and a few pretty bottles of alcohol (like Bombay Sapphire because it has the best color and bottle ever – I barely drink but like it around for guests) along with a little bowl of fresh lemons and some pretty fabric cocktail napkins in a variety of vintage patterns?)

But I shouldn’t cry about Factory 20 being in Virginia with me in Germany because locally we have the wonderfully curated shop ComingHome (I photographed one of their showrooms here awhile back). Plus, I’m close to the Netherlands and Belgium (I was just there a few weeks ago in fact) so I simply need to spend a weekend flea marketing and see what I can find. I’m currently looking for a vintage Dutch dropleaf gateleg table in white… And I want a long vintage work table for my new office this one from Belgium — I love the drawers and the wavy skirt! I also want a tressel table to use as a mini bar — just like the one shown above. I’m sad that Factory 20 is in America because they are sitting on three tables that I would buy right now if they were local. Wahhh. Oh well, I guess my American readers are in luck today!

I love these minty green chairs and can totally see them paired with a zinc top round cafe table for a kitchen.

Isn’t she darling? She’d look great in a kitchen nook with those minty green chairs shown above!

Mimou + Amelie Hegardt

August 11, 2010

Would you love to see some beautiful new products today from Sweden? Why, of course you would! The very kind Helena from Room and Serve wrote in to tell me about the new collection from Mimou. You can find bed linens, wallpaper, hand-crafted furniture and hand printed pillows.

Mimou + Amelie Hegardt

Mimou worked with Swedish illustrator Amelie Hegardt who is known for her bleeding ink silhouettes and watercolors as well as her delicate, timeless and evocative style. Her work has been translated into beautiful things for the home while also reflecting the classic Mimou style that the brand is known for.

I love the bright colors against the white background and how fresh and illustrative these prints are — the sketchy watercolors are really in right now and look great! The black and white combos look striking and very inviting and warm. The grays and browns are sensual and relaxing. What a stylish and very forward collection!

Our Shop

August 2, 2010

I always love to read what is in the decor8 submissions bag, there are so many good ones coming in lately! Gemma wrote in recently about Our Shop, which is one half graphic design studio (WorkShop is London graphic design collaborative shared by Pui Lee and Gemma Stanton) and Our Shop, a new and growing online store with old + new things for the home and your life in general. I love the stripey mugs – cheers to having your coffee in a zingy cup!

Our Shop

From Gemma, “Our shop is our labour of love and initially we thought it would be our own products only, however after visiting lots of lovely craft fairs and shows we were so inspired that we wanted it to be a platform that we can use to showcase other designers products as well as our own. Plus we can fund our own designs from the proceeds of the shop so it’s all starting to grow organically. Our Shop sells lovely homewares, greetings cards, stationery and other yummy treats. Our main ethos is not to take ourselves to seriously and we hope this is reflected in our product selection. We love bright and cheerful colours and hopefully we can bring a smile to peoples faces. We’d love to be known as a great place to come to shop for gifts for friends and family. The one stop shop we call it as you can buy a pressie and a card.”

Thank you Gemma for sharing your new shop with us!

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

July 23, 2010

So! I was in Anthropologie playing happy tourist in Los Angeles recently and realized that I should snap some photos of some of the rad displays. Like a good little girl, I asked the lady who stands guard next to the front door with her Madonna mic on her head. She gave me the go ahead with a very military-like nod and I went around the store snap, snap, snappin’ as much as I could while dodging evil stares from the sales crew, who may not known that I had asked permission first. And so, these are my sneaky spy action snaps blurry and not at all pro-level but hey, it is what it is.  So many good ideas in these photos, I had to capture the awesomeness that is Anthropologie. Their visual teams blow my mind.

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

I loved this installation with all of the books on the wall. It was such a grand entrance to the store!

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

This installation was also fantastic, thousands of what appeared to be papers on string cascading from a beam on the ceiling.

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

This was a surreal moment, seeing Flea Market Style by Emily Chalmers on the shelf, which was photographed by Debi Treloar whom I was there in L.A. with since she is shooting the book that I’m working on. It was just a moment for me, I guess. I felt really proud of myself and sometimes we need time out to feel good about ourselves and to reflect on our joys, don’t we? I also took this photo because I love the reimagined paintings of Leslie Oschmann and was so excited to see a few, for the first time, in the flesh.

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

I could have taken home this entire shelf. Swoon!

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

Love all of the salvaged wood we’re seeing on walls, furniture, kitchen cabinets, even on bathtubs lately! It’s so inspiring and I also adore seeing it as living wallpaper like this in Anthropologie.

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

Enjoying this woodsy theme…

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

I wanted to buy these organically-shaped porcelain vessels shown on the top shelf. I flipped them over to see who made them but I’ve forgotten so if you know, do tell. I couldn’t fit them in my luggage and was scared to spend so much money only to have them fall to bits in my suitcase, so I passed… but it was really hard to walk away.

Sneaky Spy in Anthropologie

Smart idea to organize a bookcase with drawers! Also like the simple, framed butterfly as art.

Isn’t Anthropologie an inspiring place?

West Elm Fall Preview

June 24, 2010

Remember how I was just telling you about all of the new things out there in the art + design world and how inspiring it all is? With all of the fairs and flea markets and indie fests going on right now, there is a lot to find and be inspired by. Not to mention what the big retailers are up to as they begin to roll out their Fall previews… Take West Elm for instance. They have some great things for Fall… would you like a mini taste of what is to come? Good, because that’s what this post is intended to do! And a big pssssst — I love their new bedding!

Now I’m hoping that I have time to hit a West Elm store when I’m in the states in July. I’ll be in New York and Los Angeles working with Debi Treloar on my book (we have a lot of spaces to style + photograph together) and I’m very excited because I’m leaving ahead of schedule so I have 4 vacation days in New York for the July 4th weekend and I’m staying an extra 4 days in California so that I can hang out with my husband as we’ll be celebrating our 9th anniversary and being in California is always special to us as we spent our honeymoon in San Francisco and Sonoma and we both just adore CA from top to bottom, it’s such an amazing state and we both love the diversity – people, places, landscape — bliss! If we ever relocated back to the states California is where we’d go!

But yes, anyway, I plan to hit a few shops while I’m stateside for nearly 3 weeks (Target here I come, ready or not!) and West Elm is one of ’em. I wonder if the Tripod table in white is flat pack… Hmmmm… It’s NICE. Also loving their new collaboration with Mike Miller
