Sarah Ahearn

The always amazing Lucie Summers on Etsy wrote to me singing the praises of a mixed media artist that she adores, Sarah Ahearn. Immediately upon viewing her work I became an insta-fan and thought of you and how much you’ll like Miss Sarah too. She also works on a letterpress creating fine paper goods. What a talented lady she is!

Sarah has lots of prints in her etsy shop (sometimes a few originals), an inspiring blog, and a beautiful portfolio on flickr.

Here are some pretty views of her inspiration board and studio space in New York that I found inspiring. I love seeing where and how people work, don’t you? Things I like about this space: her orange accent wall, rice paper pendant (pretty and affordable), the yellow chair, the fact that she can both sit and stand at her desk, and the massive chalkboard.

Thank you Lucie for sharing Sarah with us!

Etsy Take Five Tuesdays

It’s Tuesday! Time to see what’s cooking over on Etsy this week, at least according to me. :) I found a few Germans, a girl in Greece, a crafty lady in Vancouver, and a few super cute bibs including one that is as old as I am (and this one isn’t for sale). Ready?

Sieben Morgan is Tinee Kleinschroth, a German talent who creates all items by hand and those that you see with patterns are hand printed. A full-time freelance artist who specializes in printmaking, Tinee’s shop is such a treat to look through. She also has a blog.

Apple & Eve creates the sweetest little pillows! Eva is Estonian but currently living in Germany and makes the cutest crafts from home with great attention to all the little details. Darling!

Kup Kup Land is Kima, who studied graphic design and illustration. She loves to experiment with a variety of materials but seems to like felt the best. Kima was born in Barcelona then moved to Santander and now Athens — no doubt her colorful, sunny surroundings are the reason for her lively crafts.

Leslie Rogers’ little shop called Uptown Design has some of the cutest crochet characters and she takes some really cute photos. She is from Vancouver and the moment you step into her shop you’ll want to be a kid again. Go ahead, you totally can. :) She has a Dawanda store, too.

I don’t feature a lot of things for children but I have to show you Bunny Bum because I am crazy about these bibs. My best friend in Germany, Sandra, just had a daughter and my local close friend Paris is due this summer, so I’m thinking about babies a lot lately. And when I saw these mini quilts with pillows for dolls, I also couldn’t resist sharing them because they made me feel extremely happy inside. My mother made these for my Barbie dolls when I was a little girl. I have so many nice memories of my mother sewing things for my dolls that this wave of joy comes over me whenever I see handmade dolly things. :) I always felt so cherished when she made little things just for me. Like this…

I still have my first bib. My mother made this for me when she was 25 and I was waiting to be born. After I arrived, this is the bib that she gave me during feeding time. I always kept it neat and safe, my favorite dolly wore it until I was in my teens and then it was tucked away in a special box. It’s still in the box but I took it out today for the first time in years to share it here. I can’t wait to someday give it to the baby I hope to have in the future.

Handmade things never go out of style, are always cherished, and make the recipient feel so loved.

Domino Presents: A Few Good (Etsy) Men

I’m excited to share the slideshow that I’ve pulled together for Domino called A Few Good (Etsy) Men – it just went live yesterday. I felt passionate about including a piece devoted to male artists in their online Etsy gallery because lots of guys are quick to judge Etsy as mostly an all-girl space and I’m determined to show that some amazing guys do successfully sell their art as affordable prints there. The fact that a magazine as hugely popular as Domino is paying attention to their work just may be the motivation needed to encourage more guys to sell prints on sites like Etsy.

This is my small contribution to hopefully motivating the men out there, high give guys! And I’d like to thank all who helped me pull together this piece. For the men I’ve missed please send me your shop information because who knows, perhaps Domino will feature an all male review – part two in the future.

I’ve been writing for Domino magazine online since 2006, the Etsy spotlights on their site are my pride and joy. You can read them all right here.

Go men, go!

Charmingwall Inc.

Now this is one cool website. It’s called Charmingwall Inc. and is based in New York City where they have a retail space at 191 West 4th. The website is gorgeous, I love how it’s designed, and the art featured is just great. I recognize some of the artists from Etsy. Charmingwall Inc. specializes in a hand-picked selection of open-edition fine art prints from artists located around the world, covering everything from fine art to the more illustrative comic book art.

They recently launched an online store for those of us not in NYC, I encourage you to browse it — great finds! I was happy to see an artist I love, Bailey Saliwanchik, featured on their site. If you recall, I used some of her work in a space I designed for Adorn magazine awhile back when Adorn was still around (R.I.P.) and I ended up purchasing one of the paintings I featured in that same room. Bailey’s work is awesome, and for $20 you can own a print of your very own from this talented artist.
