Berlin Artist: Tina Berning – Brings "100 Girls" to Gallery Hanahou in NYC

Have you heard of Berlin-based artist Tina Berning? I love her illustrations of women, and was excited to learn that she’s bringing “100 Girls on Cheap Paper” to Gallery Hanahou in New York. I may just have to go down to check that out, it looks absolutely mesmerizing.

The opening reception is on March 29th from 6:00-9:00 p.m., but the exhibit will run until May 11th. “100 Girls” has traveled from Berlin to Tokyo, garnering praise and much interest along the way, so if you’re in New York, you have to visit Gallery Hanahou to see Tina’s works for yourself.

More about the show from a recent press release, “Artist Tina Berning counters the glossiness of the ideal image by stripping it down to cheap and yellowed paper, eliminating mask, pose, and fashion, giving the girls she draws back an expression beyond beauty and surface, so that they endanger the collective standard.”

Apple Pie Design – Wall Decals

I can’t believe how huge wall decals are right now. Each week I’m coming across more companies that specialize in these vinyl works of art, and I’m constantly amazed by how some really look like actual hand-painted wall murals. I found Apple Pie Design for the first time last night, and had to share. No dorm room decor here – these are sophisticated and grown up.

Apple Pie is a decal company out of Rhode-St-Gen?se Belgium, but with a website in English, French, and Dutch (covers most of us), it’s easy to navigate. They also ship worldwide, yeah! I find that their designs suit many tastes, from traditional to contemporary, whimsical, or even a little French country.

It’s hard to find decals that appeal to so many decor styles from a single company, but Apple Pie seems to cover everyone. Just like apple pie, a dessert that all seem to agree on. Aren’t these great? You can even dress up a child’s bedroom with silhouettes, or add understated elegance to the top corner of a room (below).

Steve Howkins Dividers + Lighting

Jody recently wrote in looking for the perfect room divider. We suggested several options for her, but now that Steve Howkins walked into my life (thanks to Modemuse), I say with a confident grin, “Surf no more!” because Steve is here and he has exactly what you’re looking for.

Okay, with the exception being that his design studio is located in Australia, it’s still worth sending him an email with the specs and see what he can come up with. Maybe he’s already in the states, who knows? What I do know is that his room dividers are the most amazing that I’ve ever seen. I love that they are relatively lightweight in polyprop. Best part, those arabesque shadows they cast. Ooooh. Imagine these in front of a window even, to replace traditional fabric curtains?

Here’s a glimpse of his lighting, more can be viewed here.

DIY Project: Transforming a Grass Rug

We’ve all seen them, those wannabe-real grass mats. Have you considered designing your own template, tracing it on the back of the mat, and cutting your way to a new look?

Dutch magazine 101 Woonideeen has a template on their website (.pdf) that you can download, enlarge, and use to create a fresh take on an otherwise boring mat. You can also try animal shapes, from a bunny to a dog, or even insects, like a butterfly. The directions here are in Dutch, but I’m thinking you can use a silver metallic marker because the backing is usually black, and trace the outline of what you want the shape to be. Then cut it out. Presto!

Has anyone tried this project?
