Modern Tots

Rule #1. Do not discredit stores for tots simply because you think there’s nothing that would appeal to you, oh childless one. Wrong.

Myth debunker: Modern Tots.

Yes, can use this table simply for it’s intended purpose, to gather children around for shaping clay and coloring, or you can use it as a sofa table to gather around a tray of raspberry martinis. The spiral two-tone bamboo and resin pattern is oh-so-chic.

boopop table by moxbox, $1,995.

rabbit and frog radios, $7
tuning into the child within?
giant ugly dolls for all ages! $595.
6 feet tall. also available, the standard size $20 uglies.
big bang lighting for your bedroom, maybe? $68
no pun intended.

Peace Industry

Thanks to decor8 reader, Scott from LA, for suggesting his favorite San Francisco based rug gallery, Peace Industry.

Here’s a glimpse of their storefront:
…and showroom:

Peace Industry offers oodles of fantastic modern and traditional style rugs that are as affordable (considering how they are made), as they are head turning beauties. My favorites are from their Melina Raisnnia felt collection, a collaboration between master Iranian felt-maker, Asghar Aliyari, and painter, Melina Raissnia. Each rug is handmade using natural shades of wool and vegetable dyes.

If you’d like to view a 15 minute documentary all about the felt making process, you can do that here. I found it extremely fascinating to see how much labor really goes into these beautiful creations.

Here’s some of my favorites. What do you think?

sun spiral, $590
butterfly, $1,480.
pile, $1,435.
fallen palm, $1,375.
brake, $615
spill, $615

Dwell Baby via Design Public

Something to drool for!

I recently witnessed the birth of Olivia, the firstborn baby girl to proud parents and good friends of ours, Audrey + Greg. Have you ever witnessed a birth? If not, add it to your “things to do before leaving this planet” list. It was amazing, made me think about how precious life really is and how we all begin naked, crying, and needing… It’s one of those OH WOW moments. The whole process of watching someone give birth is very spiritual, extraordinarily moving. Experiencing the entire nine months of pregnancy, from the time they first heard the news to seeing the baby via ultrasound, planning the baby shower, shopping, and packing the suitcase for the hospital, I felt like I was having a baby – what a process it is! I received such a thorough education about breast milk and pumping that I’ll never look at my own breasts the same. Ever!

Amidst all the excitement, there was a downer. At least for me. I kept circling back to the fact that there’s a real lack of quality modern baby bedding and furniture out there. Standing in the middle of Babies R Us and Pottery Barn, I felt like I was dropped on an alien planet of pink and powder blue. Fortunately for Audrey + Greg who have a traditional style home with cherry Ethan Allen furniture and cabbage roses everywhere, it was easy to find something to fit their space. For me, on the other hand, I would have had a nervous breakdown if I was having a baby and forced to decide between gingham, roses, or bold primary colors with a swinging monkey motif. Oh. My. Gawd.

Thankfully, Design Public has come to the rescue of parents and parents-to-be everywhere with refreshingly modern baby bedding from Dwell and furniture from Nurseryworks. Now that’s an irresistible treat worth going ga-ga over.

For the bigger babies, Design Public + Dwell offers great bedding for us, too.
