Textiles From The Amsterdam Studio of Mae Engelgeer

I really like the work of Mae Engelgeer who is a Dutch textile designer located in Amsterdam. Her blankets, weavings, placemats and tablecloths are just lovely. See what you think…

Her bio is too lovely to chop up so I think I’ll share it with you in part, “One thing immediately stands out in Mae’s approach to design: she isn’t afraid to show color. Her approach to design and her working method is really instinctive, sensory and natural. Her work can be described as fresh, modern and eye-catching. For her it is really about the ‘feel’ of a fabric and she tries to ‘bring a fabric to life’. Mae Engelgeer has a background in fashion (Amsterdam Fashion Institute) and autonomous arts and design (Sandberg Instituut), which adds up to a versatile education. Underneath this diversity runs a very clear thread, a heartbeat of ikat patterns, a close collaboration with the TextileLab, and of course the baseline of pop coloring. All of those elements emerge from Mae’s intuition, ultimately coming together into a unique sensible whole.” I can definitely see the ikat inspiration, can’t you?

Botanical Prints By Pernille Folcarelli

I came across some lovely things today when Agata, who is also the blog author of Passion Shake, stopped by to share her favorite new sideboard with me since she knows I’m on the prowl for one. Anyway, I clicked on her link and ended up on her blog and found lots of nice things like these prints by Danish artist Pernille Folcarelli. But first, how are you today? I was out and about with baby Aidan shopping and saw lots of my friends walking around – every few minutes as we strolled, we’d bump into more friends out with their babies. It was the sweetest thing. Aidan attracts attention when we’re out – strangers come right up and want to “meet” him and little old ladies tell me how “sugar sweet” he is. I am writing all of this down in his journal so I don’t forget and can tell him someday. Everyone loves this little guy, but especially me. Enough about me. Let’s look at some gorgeous work by Pernille up in Denmark.

I really do love these botanical prints by Pernille Folcarelli. They look especially stunning against smokey charcoal walls, don’t they? I think botanicals are so easy to love.

You can buy all of these prints and post cards for framing right here.

Warning: This post contains tons of links to amazing Scandinavian companies and oodles of photos showing what’s currently on-trend coming out of Scandinavia. If, and only if, you are okay for a little endless scrolling and tons of inspiration then let us begin. First, my friend Tinna drove up to Copenhagen to visit DesignTrade, a leading Danish interiors fair that runs from August 24-26, kicking off in just a few hours from now. I got my hands on their brochure in advance and looked up lots of their brands so I could pull together some of my favorite products with hopes of spotting a few trends. And I did!

Nothing gets me more inspired than seeing new collections and how brands are interpreting trends in their own way, how colors are being used, which materials are hot and what the general vibe for the Fall/Winter season will be. Here are some brands that are exhibiting at DesignTrade right now, do you spot some trends from this batch? At the bottom of this post, I’ve called out what I see trending for objects, colors, materials and the overall mood of the moment.

Overall: A bit Scandinavian Japanese in my eyes! My friend Sania Pell calls this style Scandinese. The ultimate in form meeting function – an excellent balance of both. Clean, clear, simple yet still manages to draw in the eye through bold geometric patterns and geometric shapes, interesting material combinations, etc.

Patterns: Geometrics – strong and clear forms and colors. Color blocking. Triangles!

Colors: Black, Mint, Salmon, Pale Blue, White, Mustard, Gray,  Nude, Peach, Deep Rose

Materials: Marble, gold, glass, natural wood, ceramics, concrete, plywood, cork – some copper but definitely not trending as much as last year.

Objects: Ceramics in simple forms with gorgeous glazes, glass vases with wooden bottoms or concrete tops, etc., Porcelain vases with wooden bases, small round tables as coffee tables with marble tops, colored glass, concrete shelving, round mirrors, low benches, leaning mirrors that have slim legs, splattered “ink” on linens, paper napkins, feathers, plywood furniture, plywood art and signs, metal or marble candlestick holders etc. Also trays and stools.

Don’t you feel like we were just walking this fair together in Copenhagen? Me too! See anything that you love?

Summer Homes + Anne Black Ceramics

Let’s talk about summer home envy and ceramics. I have some Anne Black ceramics in my home (and on my ears!) and even some knobs for my china cabinet are from her Danish design studio. I loved looking at her recent work on her website today, particularly her bloom vases. The colors are soft, earthy and pretty and I enjoy the natural forms.
annblack_decor8

But then I came across, once again the knobs that first introduced me to her line, along with some hooks, and their simplicity and colorways made me smile. Her Ruth plate with the bird is a delight for the eyes, too. The seam candle cup is another favorite. I love this snapshot below of some of them. Dots of happiness!

Screen Shot 2014-08-22 at 10.14.17 PM

And have you seen her summer home in Bolig magazine? Here’s a sampling below. I want a little summer home. My good friend and neighbor Tinna is Danish and has not one but TWO summer homes and I just sit here some days thinking WHAT AM I DOING WRONG because I have to get a summer home too! I mean, it’s sort of a thing here in Europe for people to have summer getaways that they own, I know many who do… And I don’t mean big country estates. Nothing fancy or OTT. Usually they are tiny, humble cottages near the sea nestled in small villages in either the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden or the northern coast of Germany and the German islands.

I honestly don’t care how remote it is, or how in need of revamping, I just long to be near the coast and to have a small summer home to disappear to each year that little Aidan and his papa. A place to call his second home… A place to play in the yard, cook outside, sun bathe in the yard where I can wear a bikini without worrying about the wobbly bits. Where I can get a small blow up pool, finger paint on the patio with my little sweetheart… Ride bikes to the shore. Oh yes, this sounds like my kind of life. So maybe I need to find a summer home? Perhaps I’ll beginning looking next Spring… Until now, let’s all peek in on Anne’s place below photographed by the amazing (and one of my all time favorites) photographer Birgitta Wolfgang Drejer

Do you also dream of owning a small summer cottage?
