Cathy Nichols (Thanks, Creative Thursday!)

May 23, 2007

I’ve been blogging a lot about artists lately. I think I could devote an entire blog to it and never run out. My current obsession has to do with my own need to start painting again, not to sell but as a hobby. It’s also fueled by my friendship with Marisa of Creative Thursday. I respect, admire, and above all, cherish Marisa for her wisdom and how genuine she is. These are all very important things to me, especially since some do not place a value on doing the right thing and being fair and Marisa does. When I need to pull myself back to center because the world feels really big (you know that feeling right?), I visit her blog because it’s her diary and I like reading about her connections with others in LA, the fun places she visits, and most of all, her podcasts. It’s refreshing to press “play” and be instantly connected to a voice that is speaking your language, and I don’t mean English.

On Marisa’s blog today, I read about a reunion she had with some of her artist pals, one being Cathy Nichols, whom I’d not heard of before. It reminded me of the value of positive female friendships, and by positive, I don’t mean *kiss* *kiss* “How’s the job?” as they half listen to your answer while thinking about what they’ll say next, I mean friends that listen, support, advise. Women that care. Friends that clean your house when you are too sick to do it yourself, or surprise you with cards and calories you don’t need – like homemade cupcakes.

After peeking at Cathy’s online portfolio, I thought about all of you and how you may like her aesthetic. I also thought about how much I love seeing so many nice friends on the blog, commenting daily, sending me really nice emails. My inbox is a little wacky, so if things bounce back or I don’t reply right away, please understand that I’m in a lot of places right now with work, life, and soon to go on vacation, so bear with me. Anyway, visit with Cathy and view her work, you can purchase originals or prints directly from her website using paypal. Let me know what you think.

And thanks Marisa, for all that you are, all that you do, and everything you share with your growing base of fans.

Holly, you had some fantastic postings recently. I can’t tell how much I loved your article about the Urban Outfitters office space and Aussie patches. I’ve posted about them on the bodie and fou blog. The address has changed BTW to http://bodieandfou.blogspot.com/ so you may want to update the link on your blog. Let me know what you think of Flavia’s new ceramic tiles. Bises Karine

    Hi holly,
What a heartfelt post. I love your reflections on friendship. One thing I have come to realize over the years is that while not all of my friends are great listenners they are all great givers. My friends mean everything to me. We’re all a bit quirky and getting more so it seems as time goes by. I am so lucky to have “my girls” as I call them. Such fun we have.

Love to feature art and artisans on Kstyle. They constantly amaze me with their talent and creativity. k

Beautiful artwork and what a fantastic post! Yes, female friendships are most fantastic especially if you’re lucky enough to find a soul friend (like soul mate but in female form). I have one and am so greatful!

Really, really cute. I love the texture to the bottom right one with the legs. Thanks for sharing – definitely a good site to investigate a little more thoroughly over lunch!

Holly, Go with that desire to start painting again! Don’t delay!
I started again a couple months ago and I can’t believe that I ever stopped! I seriously love every moment of it. I am really rusty, but it doesn’t matter, because I love it and it does something for my soul. I know that sounds dramatic. But I wish I could paint ALL day!!
So start painting, I know you will be a happy gal!

This is very nice work. It reminds me a little of Daniel Danger – you might really like his work too –

Holly, your “current obession” with artists is definitely a clue to the beginning of your own creative adventure…I have a current obsession with printmaking and it has been on my mind for over a year and realized that I am spending a lot of time looking at fabric and letterpress design sites….
I took a baby step and enrolled in a short printmaking class out of the desire to recreate a fabric that I covet. Ever since I wrote a term paper in college on textile surface design I have been intrigued. So here it is, more than ten years later, and I still have that desire. Pay attention to those yearnings!

Cathy and her art have been a great inspiration to me. She was also one of the very first people to buy an original painting from me. I’ll never forget this :)
Cathy supported me, and my art at times when others didn’t. This I will also never forget. And, she’s simply a gem! Thanks for sharing her work with your readers and thanks for the kind words you shared about me. Goodness. Start painting, it is the best thing ever and when you’re ready I’m sure you’ll be selling in no time! :)

Oh, Holly — thank you so much for including my paintings on Decor8 and for your lovely write-up about friendship. And everything you said about Marisa is true. She is such an inspiring artist and a great friend.
