Orla Kiely Home Collection for Target

January 13, 2009

Hot off the press! Yes, you read that title correctly. Orla designs for Targey! As you know, Target enlists designers to create special collections for their store and starting on February 1st you will find Orla Kiely at your local Target with select items available on Would you like a sneak peek?

The collection is quite extensive, I’ve been looking at the product shots for a few days and can’t believe the selection. There’s a printed laundry bag, hanging shoe organizer, totes, tablecloths, cork placemats, aprons, bowls, plates, canisters, and more all priced between $2.49 and $21.99. I really like the canisters, mustard yellow ceramic pitcher, mugs, glasses, cork placemats (so English!), shoe organizer, and the serving trays and bowls.

So what do you think? Are you surprised to see Orla at Target? Do you like what you see? Are you going to run to your nearest store on February 1st 15th? I highly suggest it because with all of these designer collections the good stuff goes very quickly!

i am very suprised to see orla at target, as they have a prestige brand to protect. on the other hand being from the UK im not that familiar with targets offerings, maybe they have lots of upscale labels ?

and if it were me i would not say no to designing for target : )

I saw a product in this month’s Food Network Magazine but couldn’t find any info online regarding the debut date. Thank you SO much!! I will be there February 1 and just hope our Target has everything out and ready to go. Good thing I have Target gift cards to spend because I can assure you, there are many things that are calling my name even though I swore I’d cut back on the “fluff” this year. But come on, it’s Orla and Target — how could you go wrong?!

Holly, thank you very much for the sneak peek! I’ll definitely be back later to see even more photos :-)

  • Reply Emily January 13, 2009 at 2:18 pm

It’s funny how often I hear about Target being picked over. Living in a more rural area, everything that moves through Target here seems to go on sale. I stopped into the Home Event last week and a few things caught my eye, but I know I can get them for at least 30% and possibly up to 60% or so if I just wait a little while. Sometimes there are perks to living in the boonies!

I have over a dozen pieces: purses (who can have enough?), wallets, hats, and my husband just gave me the rolling luggage for the holidays (best gift ever). I’ve been to her flagship store in London. I could go on but it’s a little scary. I’m sooooo excited for this and may have to get one of everything (okay, that’s silly, but is it?). Wow. My only gripe is that I’m not the biggest fan of the pear, where’s the stem pattern?? But maybe there will be more! Thank you, Target! I am going to be there on Feb 1 which can’t come soon enough.

Humm… As a consumer I LOVE this, but as a shop owner who carries Orla Kiely, this is not good, espcially in the present economy. It is going to be hard to explain to customers the subtle differences between the lines carried in boutiques and those they can find at Target. I am not sure how this will pan out for us retailers :(

    • Reply decor8 January 15, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Kim – What an excellent point you make. It makes me think of Elizabeth over at I guess one thing that you can tell customers is that Orla’s stuff at Target is only “limited time” so once it’s gone, that’s it. And it does not include fashion, bags, or her ‘high end’ stuff. I think that is a good point to make. In the end, it may be a good thing for you because people will have some exposure to the brand whereas before they may have looked at your bags and said “Orla WHO?”. Now they will know and they may even desire the product more because it had some good press so to speak. If she were selling bags and stationery at Target (and clothing) I’d have to say “Ut oh”. But this is mostly kitchen and dining stuff from what I can see.

Patterns and colours aren’t nearly as nice as the bits in her UK store. As a US expat, I love Target but these all look, well, a bit ‘off’ somehow.

  • Reply sam January 21, 2009 at 12:38 am

Diffusion lines are pretty common though. Even considering it may be a limited range presumably it is less limited (does that make sense?!) than the higher end Orla Keily stuff?

I haven’t seen it though because I live in New Zealand and just happened to see this site referenced.

Hi Win, When I wrote this post about Orla Kiely at Target, I pulled information from their official press release and from their publicist and both confirmed the date of February 1st.
I’m not sure about the 15th but I’ve heard that date but I’m really not sure. I guess the best way to know is to go to your local Target on Feb 1st or the morning of the 2nd and if you don’t see anything, ask the store manager and see what they say. It very well could be the 15th, but again my sources pointed to the 1st. :) — Holly

The collection sets will be in all stores beginning Sunday, February 15, 2009 and running thru mid-May. The product assortment varies by store. As of now, I don’t see that it’s available on our web site.

She sounds very confirmed but I will call the Target I’m going to visit on Jan. 31st just to be sure. None of the Target’s here have any of the kitchen or dining things, and the employees didn’t seem to think there was anything else to the line. Target’s website doesn’t seem to have any offerings either. What a disappointment! I even got up early to beat the super bowl last minute crowds.

No, I went to three targets – all i found was the storage stuff. Everyone I politely asked was unaware of what I was talking about. UGH – why do I care so much? The third person i harassed said that they were in season transition and that it was probably in the back and had not made it’s way to the shelves. I am not so sure I believe them yet :) Come on Target – give me my Orla

Here in Houston TX it’s been frustarting too. Nothing at the Supertarget off Main and the one out in Sugar Land (HWY 59 @ 6) had only storage items and a few mugs/melame plates. No serveware or placemats which were what I was really looking for. What I did see was cute/well made though.

Went to a Target in North Dallas, TX (Coit and the George Bush Turnpike) and they too had just the storage/organization items – magazine holders, storage boxes and laundry bags. The employee I spoke with said that more was to come, and it would be located on the endcaps. Good luck with the hunt everyone!

This article from the Detroit Free Press makes it sound like it’s a phased rollout — first storage, then kitchen around mid-month. Of course, the dates may be off as the reporter makes it sound like the first pieces were scheduled to be on shelves Feb. 8, but based on the other comments, they are out now (but maybe not in Detroit?!).

    Good luck!

  • Reply win February 1, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Ok, here’s the scoop–at least from what I could find out. I called around some Targets in Washington State on Jan. 30th, most people who answered the phone didn’t know what i was talking about, except one floor manager. He said the reason why some Targets had already put out certain items (seems mostly storage items) was b/c they got the shipment in earlier. I do carry some Orla’s bags in my shop so I am aware that they like to ship things in batches–different Deliveries. They put the items out early because they got them early, if you didnt’ see anything from your Target was b/c they didn’t get the early shipment. Now they were NOT suppose to get ther early, but what the heck. So seems most of them are still aiming for Feb. 15th as I was told by the customer service from Target head office. Mind you that the shipments might be in earlier, so what I will do is to call your Targets often just in case you miss the day they open the boxes. Good Luck! : )

Unbelievable! I gotta check my local store (Redmond, WA) though i’m not hopeful, we’re suburb!! I just checked, only 4 items returned by search of the brand name, melamine eating sets only, nothing close to the pictures your listed. Thanks!

Here in Boston, I just scooped up some of the kitchen linens in the blue flower and green pear print, and the towel hooks (which I may return). They only had linens left, most of the endcap was pretty empty.

They also had the storage boxes, canvas organizers and the laundry bag (which I resisted!).

I am still on the lookout for the ceramic bowls and that green pitcher…I am going to check again next week.

Don’t know if anyone’s checked recently but the majority of the dishware is now available on Target’s website here:

Was definitely bummed to see the canisters were already gone by the time I stumbled on this late this afternoon.

Houston area targets have the kitchen stuff out now.

My mother just cleaned out her local Target buying all of the Orla stuff for me – it’s all super cute! If anyone is in the LA area, the Target on Nordhoff/Balboa in the San Fernando Valley has EVERYTHING. Well, one less of everything now, but my mom said there was still a ton of stuff, and the only thing they were sold out of was the kitchen floor mat. I hope you guys all find what you want!

I just picked up a bunch of the storage bins and I love them. the timing was perfect for the spring cleaning and organizing frenzy I’m in. I’m told the dishware will show up in the coming weeks… I’m really hoping to snag some table linens! and those canisters – I saw they’re already on ebay for several times their price. poachers…

If you are searching online at Target, search “abacus” and you will pull up the storage bins and magazine holders. I bought them in person and they are the orla kiely ones–i don’t know why they are under “abacus” online.
