Ombre DIY: Dresser From IKEA

Hello friends! In February I talked about the ombre trend (here) and now in June I still find myself really loving it. That is why when this image arrived in my inbox I couldn’t resist posting it.

IKEA

I love this! And the best part about this look is that all you need is a dresser and some paint – pretty easy to come by and in most cases, this can be an affordable DIY project. IKEA Livet Hemma in Sweden recently painted TARVA, their new dresser, in tones of apricot and I love it. The color scale from powdery pink to saturated coral makes it an instant eye-catcher!

The easiest way to get the colors right is to simply work off of a paint card at the home store and buy the shades on it in the color that you like the most and paint them in the exact order on your dresser drawers as they appear on the card, from lightest (on the top) to darkest (on the bottom). If the colors seem too light from one shade to the next, skip and paint every other shade on the card instead for more intensity.

Would you try this at home? I would in a red hot second!

I have been wanting to paint my son’s plain dresser in ombre tones for months and things keep getting in the way – I’m envisioning teals/aquas for his room ;D

I was trying to decide if you could buy one color and then white paint and just dilute it as you paint up. Either way, love the concept, and love paint samples.

Love this chest of drawers, Holly…

The ombre trend still seems to be very much ‘en vogue’ with two florist’s blogs I’ve read this week also featuring it on their blogs : Michael Daigian Design & Lauryl Lane!

Just shows how much of an overlap there is between interior design and floral trends…

That drawer is awesome! I am normally not that much into IKEA stuff, but individualized it looks great!

    I did a little ombre-experiment myself lately:

i love the ombre style very chic, would you recommend using a paint and prime? or would you rather have a distress dresser?

Hey Holly, Love this dresser. Being a very old diy-er, I bet this can be done much, much cheaper by the adventurous spirit. Buy two cans of paint, the coral color on the bottom and a can of white. Paint the white part of the dresser first, then the coral. Then start adding the white paint to the darker until you get the colors you desire for the other drawers (you might want to buy a larger can of the white paint).

I like every ones idea of diluting the paint with white, but I would also say you could probably get this done by just buying the paint samples at lowes/ home depot for $5 a pop!

I really love the idea of ombre on the dresser drawers! I just published a blog post this morning about how we painted the ombre stripes in our nursery, and at the end I gave some examples of alternate ways to introduce ombre into a room – and I linked to your ombre dresser post. Just wanted to let you know :)
