#bloghug – Show Your Love!

January 30, 2013

It’s time for a hashtag party – care to join? It’s called #bloghug but first, why I’m bothering to do this? I was thinking a lot lately about the connections we make online and the connectors who lead the pack in this effort (maybe one of them is you) and how some have told me that they feel like their hard work isn’t a) getting them anywhere b) receiving much feedback OR that c) they aren’t really feeling so excited lately about blogging. I thought #bloghug could help spread a little internet cheer.

#bloghug - Show Your Love!

While you are out there pinning and dragging and dropping and clicking and scrolling please take a moment and think about where all of this content comes from and give a blogger a little high five if you can. I can’t imagine the world going back in time to when blogs didn’t exist BUT it is sooo super easy to take for granted those who blog and inspire us all day, isn’t it? I am so proud of our blogger community overall, aren’t you? To all of you out there who are connecting others through your blog, your website, etc. I value you. We value you! You have value – a lot of it! So, I ask you…

Have you hugged a blogger today?

Seriously, have you? Not in real life… I’m talking about a virtual hug, a virtual high five. Maybe this week you can comment on their blog, “like” their Facebook page, send them a friendly tweet – simply to say YOU ROCK.

How to be part of #bloghug

1) Write a blog post about your favorite bloggers or blogger and tweet it to me (@decor8) with hashtag #bloghug so I can pin it.

2) Make a video and post it on your blog and tweet the link to me (@decor8) with hashtag #bloghug so I can pin that, too!

3) Get creative! Have someone snap your photo of you reading a favorite blog on your iPad (just not your own LOL!), or holding a sign that says “I Love Blogs #bloghug” or something that just shows a little love. You can use Instagram for this too – just tweet the photo to me (@decor8) with hashtag #bloghug with a link to your instagram.com page so I can pin it!

Deadline: February 15.

Here are some previous hashtag parties I’ve hosted with themes: #stripemania & #discomania to give you some ideas.

I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!

Remember: #bloghug

Here is the #bloghug board on Pinterest where I’ll pin your stuff!

This is such a good idea, sometimes it can feel like writing into the void. I have a big readership, but not that many comments, so I appreciate every one.

I was wondering what to blog about today, I think I’ll do a shout out hug post!

  • Reply Sandy January 30, 2013 at 8:29 pm

My dear Holly, you can’t imagine how much appreciated your blogpost is today! I hugged a blogger today for real, my dear friend Meeta ;-) But your words are totally my cup of tea so to say. I seriously had a negative affected kind of a day with lots of negative competition amongst bloggers. I don’t need that. It affects us and isn’t good for our karma, I guess. Some bloggers out there only talk about sharing and liking and supporting but there isn’t any action.
I will take part in your wonderful bloghug party. Thanks – after a piece of tart and a real hug, you made my day!
    Hugs, Sandy

    • Reply decor8 January 30, 2013 at 9:15 pm

@Sandy – Sadly, there is a lot of negative competition going on – I see it and feel it – I don’t know why but it’s an epidemic in Germany amongst so many of the bloggers to either be negative or feel the negatively and as a result, get really down about it. I’m hoping somehow to change it – I’m thinking of a plan, a way to let the sunshine back in on blogging in Germany so that it’s less about SEO, copying others’ ideas presenting them as your own, and a page view popularity contest and more about HEART and HAPPINESS and AUTHENTICITY. Maybe you can help me somehow. And Meeta too. :)

  • Reply Meeta January 30, 2013 at 9:01 pm

Yup I am very much in on this Holly! I hugged a blogger for real today .. the lovely Sandy. And it felt good.

  • Reply Lisa Ancarrow January 30, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Ditto to all above – such a awesome idea! ((Hugs)) to all

  • Reply Meeta January 30, 2013 at 9:35 pm

@decor8: @Holly @Sandy … I have been blogging for 7 years now (Holly, you and I are the dinosaurs :o)) and mostly have only received the positive sides of blogging. I have worked hard to be a supportive and giving part of the community and love the sharing, the coming together and helping each other grow. It’s how I got started and now that my blog and I are in the position I am happy to reciprocate.

I am not always sure the competition and negativity is a Germany thing. I notice this often in the “newer” blogging generation who seem to think there is a quick way to get to the top, make big money, get more popular. But it all seems to be for the wrong reasons and that is just wrong and bound to fail. What depresses me is the fact that when you help, give and support without any expectations in return – it hurts even more when fingers are pointed at you and you are accused of things you had no bad intentions of doing. Forget that there is no gratitude but at least do not be so arrogant.

I would love to help change this positively. You both have been a part of my workshops and know that the essence of these workshops are to show how rewarding it is to give and support each other to build a stronger community.

    Let’s do it!!

    • Reply decor8 January 30, 2013 at 11:36 pm

@Meeta – So many great points – I loved being a guest speaker at your food styling and photography workshop – you are right – the essence of your workshops was really about being supportive and giving. I definitely don’t think blog competition and negativity is only here in Germany – oh god, no!

I heard alarming stories about bloggers in nearby countries and bloggers in other parts of the world too. But, overall, I hear many negative stories in Germany about copycats, really bad gossip and companies who work with bloggers in often unethical ways. As a “foreigner” who worked for years as a blogger in America, I can honestly say that American bloggers overall are VERY supportive and this stuff exists but only in very small doses. When I go to the states on my book tours or to teach, etc. my fellow American blogger friends are SO SUPER EXCITED AND HAPPY to welcome me and to see one another at these events – the buzz is incredible and so, so great.

The same can be said when I’ve done events in England – oh my goodness the London bloggers up there are super – supportive, cheering you on, it’s really cool and the focus is so much more realistic and normal. I also have loved doing events in the Netherlands.

I LOVE living in Germany, in fact I decided to move here because I wanted to see growth and change. Within a year after moving over, I had a beautiful book/blogger’s event at the Soho House in Berlin and over 130 bloggers came – I was THRILLED. Now, one event after another pops up around blogging and more and more bloggers are taking my online classes from Germany and I am SO HAPPY to see this energy. We finally have bloggers, blogger events, meet ups, workshops and handmade markets. It’s all so sudden and makes me SO HAPPY that I moved here. Really.

I’m honored to be living in Germany and to be a small part of the movement forward that I am witnessing. Most of the bloggers in Germany (like you, Igor J., Anna S., Nic H. and Steffi L. and many others) are so supportive of me and other bloggers and that is very refreshing. The thing is, I keep hearing bloggers talk about all of the problems that exist here that I don’t know about because (I think) I’m not reading German blogs as often as I read English ones (easier to understand my native language right now). One story after another so I’m concerned. Once negative things creep into any community, bonds can be broken. It is important that bloggers stay together and help one another – I think in Germany it is really important since it’s a small country in comparison to say, America, so bloggers rely on one another even more. It’s also so important to think about how others are impacted when we are naughty (*stealing what doesn’t belong to us, for instance, online.)

Okay just wanted to clarify! xo

Wonderful idea and I am so in! I can totally relate to what Sandy said and you too Holly. I wanted to dig deeper into the German blogging sphere since this is where I live now, but I get the feeling of competition as well even though everyone is friendly, is that weird? I contemplated laying of the blogosphere for a while and just doing my own thing, but that feels too disconnected. So yeah, I give hugs!

Dear Holly and the merry band of bloggers here,
Thank-you Holly for inviting a bloghug connection. I’m a newbie; blogging about and for women and loving every minute of it. I get good visitors, except they feel mostly anonymous — whispers from google analytics – does that make any sense? I have so many wonderful bloggers to thank when I take you up on your offer to #bloghug. But, as a newcomer, I can’t help but wonder if the heyday for comitted and engaged readers has come and gone just as I’m here to join in on the fun. Just need some feedback, I guess, or to know if this is how a rookie blogger gets her feet wet. It doesn’t matter, I’m thankful to you, Holly for inspiring me along my blogging journey.

  • Reply Jeanne February 16, 2013 at 4:21 am

    Hello Holly-
I “favorited” your tweet a while back so that i would remember to get my post out, and it is now 2/15 at 7:15 on the West Coast and , I’ve been so crazed that I totally forgot. Running on fumes right now after a long night up finishing up work for one career while starting a new one, my forehead is banging against my keyboard since I’m so sleep deprived. But I can’t miss this opportunity to show my appreciation to the my fellow bloggers, myself being a newbie! I just hope I make through the night – I’ll make it short but sweet.

Oh Holly. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. This is exactly the kind of thing I hoped you might do. So needed. Beautiful. J x
